This is an exhaust temperature sensor. Diesel vehicles with a DPF have two exhaust temperature sensors, one before and one after the DPF. It measures the exhaust temperature for the regeneration process. When they fail, the engine warning light comes on, the engine lacks power and regeneration does not take place.

Hi guys. This is an AdBlue module. It sits inside the AdBlue tank. It is responsible for calculating the level, measuring the temperature and also heating the AdBlue. This one had a fault with the temperature gauge, constantly reading 71 degrees and bringing the engine warning light was on.

Brake disc’s. For some time now Mercedes have had a quick and easy way to check Service life of the disc. The arrows show additional drilling’s on the face of the disc. When the disc has worn and the drilling is no longer visible the service life has been reached are due for replacement.
The second picture shows a used pair of brake discs which have reached their service limit. The inner surface is very heavily corroded, this caused the brakes to judder when applied.

Here we have an electronic steering lock. This is the thing that buzzes each time you put the key in or take out of the ignition switch. Normally very reliable, however C class 204 and E class 212 models I have changed many. Usual symptoms are, car unlocks as normal. You put the key in, no buzz noises, the dash mileage is displayed but no ignition lights and the engine doesn’t start. As it part of the security system, it’s only available from Mercedes.

This is an electro hydraulic power steering pump fitted to ML’s. Unusual to change one of these, custom has total loss of power steering with a red warning on the dash. Obviously these systems are designed to fail safe, meaning you can still turn the steering just with a great deal of effort!

This is a vacuum transducer. They are used to electronically control vacuum supplied to a variety of components, including Turbo chargers, water pumps, EGR valves. Vacuum is supplied to the small white pipe, when the transducer is energised it supplies a vacuum to the larger white pipe. The black pipe is used to release the vacuum pressure.

It’s all about the boost! Theses are two charge air hoses or boost hoses. They are used on petrol and Diesel engines. They connect the turbo to the inter cooler and from the inter cooler to the intake manifold. The red one on the left has a mesh structure with a rubber inner and outer. The black one on the left is the more traditional reinforced rubber type. Both the hoses have split causing a variety of problems, mainly the engine light will come on with a lack of power.... You may also hear a whooshing noise under acceleration. Normally quite straightforward to find either visually, with an air leak or smoke leak test.

This is a water pump. Modern systems have a vacuum operated water pump, this allows the engine control unit to shut off the water pump flow, allowing the engine to warm up quickly. If you look closely you can see the ring over the impeller is loose, this caused the water pump to leak.

Metallic rattle on engine start? This is a pair of camshaft adjusters on a Mercedes 271 engine. (Petrol Turbocharged) They can rattle for the first few seconds until the oil pressure has built up. These are not genuine Mercedes ones but a good aftermarket alternative. You need to remove the cam cover to check the adjusters, you can also check the timing chain for stretch at the same time.

I haven’t changed a clutch kit for a while. This is from a E class 211 220CDI. It had total loss of drive. As you can see the friction material has totally disinterested from the drive plate on the right. Still original clutch @ 175000 isn’t bad!!

This quite a common problem with diesel injectors. After time the injector Seal can start to leak. You can normally hear a chuffing noise and will definitely smell it especially through the heater vents, sometimes can cause the engine to run unevenly. The quicker you repair this the better! It can take ages to clean it all off, and can damage wiring looms, rubber hoses and seals.

This is a crank shaft sensor. It detects the position of the crankshaft which is monitored by the engine control unit I have changed three of these lately, one car had cold start issues. The other two cars would cut out when hot and not re start until they had cooled down. This problem effects the older V6 (112) and V8 (113) engines.

This is part of a window regulator, it makes the glass go up and down. After time the cables corrode, either jamming up the wheel or snapping. The cable on the left has frayed, and tangled the drive wheel.
