Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is the site managed?

This site does not have a dedicated team to service the enquiries made through it. The staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles.

2. What can I post on the site?

Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue.

Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments.

Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at PALS@bedfordhospital. nhs. uk or by phone on 01234 795814.

3. What is your deletion policy?

Bedford Hospital NHS Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to Bedford Hospital NHS Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries.

Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.

4. Why do you mention the names of some patients?

Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.

5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here?

You can contact the communications team via email at Communications@bedfordhospital. nhs. uk. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice.

Our Riverbank Ward received a special visit from young volunteers taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) who donated a selection of toys and books to the ward. Thank you so much for your kind donations; it really makes a difference to our patients.

A big thank you to HM Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Helen Nellis who officially opened our new state of the art MRI scanner.
The new £1m scanner was generously funded by the Bedford Hospitals Charity.
The new Siemens machine means the hospital now has three on-site MRI scanners, including the use of a mobile scanner for a further 18 months, which will decrease waiting times for patients, reducing the undue stress and uncertainty patients feel while waiting for diagnosis.

You treated my son this morning with a head injury the service was excellent and nurses/staff were amazing! Such a high level or care and I’m so grateful to you all. Thank you.

User

When you need treatment, these guys do a wonderful job. Both myself and my 1 year old had serious illnesses (viral meningitis and sepsis) and we were seen immediately and had the best quality care. I don't feel that our nurses and doctors get enough credit for what they do for us.

User

We hear constantly about how our national health is broken and how badly people are treated. Let's hear a different side!!!

I had an appointment for an Endoscopy today, I am a normal guy who is on the normal National Health. The moment I arrived I was met by a lovely receptionist who sent me the right way , then to be greated by an equally lovely nurse who explained where to go and what to do. Next was the ward , again met by people who were attentive and calming. Then came the crunch time and off to get a very uncomfortable experience and not what I expected, if it wasn't for the way they made me feel and how they looked after me and coached me through the procedure I would have lost the plot.

I want to recognise the work and the professionalism the team showed me today and a huge thankyou to them for keeping me calm and looking after me.

Broken health care ?????????

User

Was sent to A&E by my GP where I was seen by several lovely members of staff and then admitted to Whitbread ward. Although the staff were very busy they were all cheerful and friendly and caring. Luckily my stay was a short one and I would like to thank all the members of staff I met and say what an amazing job they do.

User

The staff in A&E looked after my 5 year old son so quickly and thoroughly checked him for us at the weekend. Amazing doctors and nurses, fantastic NHS service, thank u so much

User

The nurses were amazing! They were friendly and sympathetic. It was clearly a busy evening, but I felt well taken care of. I’d really like to thank the nurses who helped me through the evening.

User

User

Thank you thank you thank you to The river bank staff! My little girl was admitted with gastroenteritis and the staff couldn’t be more helpful. The nurses that cared for Mollie were so caring of not only mollie but me too. I appreciate that the hospital is short staffed so I didn’t mind waiting too much. I LOvE that all parents are aloud to have as much tea and toast as you fancy which came in handy at 3am I tell ya! Thanks once again,

Hannah

User

Thank you so much to the male nurse this evening I can’t remember his name but he was happy and ensured my daughter who had tonsillitis was taken care of and got Sara who done handover for evening she was amazing as well. I’m so grateful

User

Shout out to the fabulous care and attention my Mum has received over the last 2 weeks on Shuttleworth Ward. My Mum, Penny Mitchell, was admitted via A&E and spent the first few days being investigated, then had major surgery. The level of empathy and consideration shown to her and us was exemplary, and it made a very worrying time considerably easier for us all. Following surgery Mum had great continuity of care from fabulous staff, nurses & Doctors alike. Words are not enough to express my families gratitude, thank you so very much from us all xx

User

I would just like to thank all the staff in A&E, AAU and CCU for nursing me back to my “normal” self! I entered A&E on 15th Dec, delirious, unable to control my breathing, just generally very unwell. I was seen almost immediately....turns out I had pneumonia and I was in a very bad way. The staff in Bedford hospital bent over backwards to get me better, they tolerated the temper tantrums because I wanted to go home...And insisted I stay. I couldn’t have asked for better nurses or Drs. I very rarely lean on the NHS, but by god you’re good!! Thank you again. You deserve better than our government will ever give you.

User

I would just like to say how wonderful this hospital is. We visited here yesterday as an outpatient accompanying my 92 year old dad. He had 3 appointments, each one was on time and he was given courtesy and respect at each one. Well done Bedford Hospital and thank you for making it good experience.

User

I was unfortunate enough to be taken ill whilst driving near Bedford last Saturday afternoon. Ended up in A&E thanks to the wonderful ambulance crew who came to my aid. Crew (two ladies) were soooo good at their jobs but also totally charming and lovely. On arrival at Bedford A&E, I was treated wonderfully. From the Staff Nurse to the Doctor, the Radiologist and ALL the staff I met, THANK-YOU so, so much. I recovered sufficiently to get back home to Newcastle the following day. With such marvellous staff, we have an NHS to be proud of - if only the Government would fund it properly and stop repeating the same tired rhetoric, just think how good it could be!! I for one would happily pay more tax to fund it properly. Thank-you all once again.

User

I took my daughter to A and E as ordered by her doctor, the staff from the receptionist through to the surgeon were brilliant. The only thing negative I can say is not enough staff but that’s the government fault

User

Excellent service and care from Bedford Hospital in the last two weeks. From the initial outpatients appointment in Orthopaedics and Miki in X-ray Dept on 19 April, then called on Monday afternoon and booked in for minor surgery yesterday. Fast, efficient and great care from the Theatre team under Mr Nayak and everyone at the Tavistock Ward and home by 12.30pm after a cuppa and a sandwich. Thank you all.

User

A massive thank you to the hospital maternity staff for looking after myself & my daughter after her birth & my c section. Felt so lucky to have such amazing women look after us so well. Mbali was born on the 8th May 2018 by c section and we were both lookwd after so well from prep to after care Xx

My mother is in South wing hospital, after being rushed in by ambulance over the weekend... Mum is dying of cancer and now they think she has had a heart attack....

Her diet is very strict and so much she can't eat. Mum has told the staff that she can not eat the food and nothing has been done...

If you are ill in hospital you starve and have to wait for a bed.... Go to prison, you immediately get a bed and 3 good meals per day....

Have the NHS got it all wrong....

User

Husband seen in A&E Wednesday night. Great doctors and nurses, clear communication regarding what was happening and what was going to happen. Thorough enough to investigate and find colon infection and fever.

Sadly inpatient treatment not as good. Bed not changed in 3 days, toilet, sinks, room not cleaned (I had to ask for the toilet to be cleaned) notes not with patient, staff unsure whether he was on the ward or not.

Consultant instructed low residue diet. Consultant asked for diet sheet to be given to patient, which took far too long resulting in patient being given peas, vegetable soup and beans. All foods he should not have eaten.

Medical care from surgical team very good but ward care poor. Cleanliness disgraceful and no one to talk to and raise your concerns. Pals part time as is reception but a fancy hologram in the main entrance tells you to speak up if concerned.

User

If you are told you need something done urgently urgently means absolutely nothing.

If you try and ring the ward no one will answer the phone.

Your medications will sometimes be forgotten or given at the wrong times.

If you are on insulin and ask for something to eat because you are starting to hypo. You won't be given anything because it's only one and a half hours until dinner time.!!!

You will be told that you are going to have this that and the other done but it doesn't happen.

MRI scanner broken

CT scanner broken

You may be told that you haven't had a stroke and over 4 weeks later you're told yes you have.

So many mistakes made!!!
