We’re not off our rockers at Church Arcade but we’d like you to be on them. We have two rocking chairs and a glider chair in this week. The larger rocker is in need of some TLC but is still a good sturdy piece of furniture which could be brightened up with some fresh paint and look great in your conservatory or nursery. It’s presently priced at £50 (public) and £40 for members. On the subject of nurseries we have a very comfy glider chair which is also great for rocking small children (and their parents!) to sleep. This is also priced at £50 (public and £40 (members). Finally we have baby bears’s rocker in varnished pine. This traditionally-styled chair ISBN new and priced at £20 for public and £18 for members.

Gadsby Street has this unique cabinet for sale. Constructed some time ago, probably in the 1960s or ‘70s, from recycled timber (wardrobe?) it’s a classic example of one of the things that we’re about, minimising waste and reusing what we can. It’s ideal for indoor or garage/workshop use and could be wall-hung or free-standing. £20 for general public, £16 for members.

We’ve also got two vintage bureaus at Gadsby Street. Both have fold-down lids with writing surfaces inside; one has automatically-extending support arms. Both could do with some sympathetic restoration work but are perfectly useable.

Having bought your new speakers from us you’ll want something comfy to sit or lounge on whilst listening to some fine sounds. We have a very comfortable 2-seat sofa and armchair for you to do it on. Public price is £100 and members’ price £80 so you’ll get free local delivery within eight miles of Bedford.

Our Gadsby Street furniture store has a couple of period dressing tables looking for new homes. The younger of the two is a post-war light oak design (1950s- early 1960s) and has it’s mirror installed. It is 48 inches (122 cm) wide, 47 inches (120 cm) tall over the mirror and 18 inches (46 cm) deep. Public price is £20, members’ price £16. The older dressing table, very late Victorian or early Edwardian in style is mahogany and has an elegant curved front. It is 43 inches (109 cm) wide, 31 inches (79 cm) tall and maximum depth is 19 1/2 inches (49 cm). There isalso a large and elegant mirror (approx 24 x 36 inches, 61 x 92 cm) but it’s supports were missing when we received it and replacements will need to be sourced. Public price is presently £40, members’ price £32.

We have another unusual book at Church Arcade this week. “Pilot-Prisoner-Survivor” is the story of Australian Harvey Besley who joined the Royal Australian Air Force at the outbreak of World War II and trained as a pilot. He flew Bristol Blenheim light bombers in the Middle- and Far-East: in the latter theatre of operations his aircraft was involved in a mid-air collision and he became a prisoner of the Japanese. He and a number of fellow prisoners escaped during a forced march later in the war as the Japanese attempted to evade the, by now, advancing allied forces somewhere near Rangoon. Our copy of this book is in very good condition and is presently for sale at £7.50 (other sellers are currently asking £17.99 plus postage).

We’re making room for new stock at Church Arcade so we’ve reduced the prices of some of our new furniture and electricals. We have 4-foot orthopaedic mattresses and bases for £120 complete, Corona waxed pine bedroom furniture (wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside cabinet) for £210, Hotpoint microwaves for £55 and Wahl 2000w hair dryers for £12. Items over £60 (£45 for members) are eligible for free delivery within eight miles of Bedford. We also have a range of single, double and king size beds available for prices from £102 to £310: please call in or phone for further details.

User

We have this traditionally-styled wardrobe for sale at Church Arcade. Solid wood (“no veneer in ‘ere!”) there’s plenty of hanging space (51 inches/ 130 cm from rail to floor) as well as a capacious drawer, so plenty of room for socks and woolies. The wardrobe stands 6 feet 6 inches (2m) tall, is 43 inches (110 cm) wide overall and 26 inches (67 cm) deep overall. Due to its size and weight this item is (free within 8 miles of Bedford) ground floor delivery only, and is presently priced at £150 (public) and £120 for members.
