Blickling Estate Nt Description

Nobody ever forgets their first sight of Blickling. The breath-taking red-brick mansion and ancient yew hedges sit at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park in the beautiful Bure meadows.

The story of the estate unfolds over a thousand years. The landscape with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk.

Blickling’s owners have used the estate as a place of quiet refuge, while playing their part on the world’s political stage. Philip Kerr, 11th Marquis of Lothian, left this estate to the National Trust in 1940, and he’s vital to its story. Without him, it’s unlikely that Blickling would still be around for you to explore, along with many other places that you love.

Went for a lovely New Year’s Day walk around the lake with a group from Norwich Community Choir - always an absolute pleasure to visit here esp on a sunny crisp winter’s morning. The staff are always so friendly and helpful also 🙂

User

We love going to Blickling! We go for lots of walks around the gardens with our two little boys. They live the wheelbarrows in the walled garden and the games on the lawn! We always look for Squirrel Nutkin and Peter Rabbit as we wander around. Love the cafes too but wish they were a bit bigger!

User

We had a great day at Blickling today on our first visit. We would like to particularly commend Peter Richardson who took us on a walking tour of the gardens. His knowledge of not only the gardens but the property/history made our visit. Having visited National Trust properties for 30 years I would say Peter is one of your top guides. Thank you

User

Nice early Sunday morning walk round the estate and lake feel very lucky to live here in norfolk

User

Lovely walk around the grounds today. The weather was beaming and the views were stunning. The food was also very nice, we enjoyed a lovely cake and sausage roll :-) Also made a sneaky purchase from the garden shop, lovely things there too. Highly recommend!

User

Love going here with my dog Max. Training for a 14mile walk so walked the estate twice doing 10miles .so much to look at and lovely fews always finding new parts to explore .being a member of the national trust means parking is free so cheap and lovely day out

User

Living close by we love to visit the hall and gardens often.. ive just got back from the In Stitches Textile art exhibition on for another 3 weeks.. too good to miss.ÔøΩ..

User

I love Blickling, my favourite NT in Norfolk, especially the lovely walks in the countryside or reading a book by the lake in the summer. The Walled Gardens are beautiful and what's better than a cream tea to top it off!

User

Great place to take dogs for walks especially round the lake! Lovely views. Parking was £5 but I suppose that is a reasonable charge for the upkeep of the place and the grounds. When we finished our walk though I did hand our pay and display ticket onto a senior fellow waiting in line at the machine so he didn't have to pay ha (I encourage all to do the same 😎)

User

Delightful day out

Hired bikes. Very good value at £5 each. And this was for all day! Didn’t know how much they were from the website, but very pleasantly surprised. Good cycle path around estate, good for most levels of rider. We would come again just for this. Took us about 45 minutes to cycle the route at an easy pace.

Gardens were lovely, the whole day being very relaxing and de-stressing. House next time.

Highly recommended.

User

Brilliant afternoon & early evening at the Christmas is Coming lights event on Friday 1st Dec - lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, well organised event & a too die for Beef Pie for tea in the cafe!!

User

Amazing place to visit , ticks all the boxes for a family day out ! Perfect

User

We had a great day out with 2 grandchildren. There is lots of interesting things to do, a dress up room and games on the grass for the children so that they didn't get bored. The room guides were lovely and really made the visit more interesting. Having the mirrors to look up at the ceilings without straining your neck is a great idea. The beautiful house and gardens are delightful, with the RAF history room and shop/cafe being a great addition. My previous visit here was at Christmas, and it was lovely to see the tree in the entrance hall and the traditional decorations, with a lovely festive atmosphere provided by a live string quartet playing carols.

User

Love going to Blickling, can spend all day there and being just on my door step I’m very lucky! I love the gardens and the house is amazing, I could spend all day in the book shop and the cafe. The estate is my favourite part, I have to two nutty jack russells who adore Blickling. My only negative would be the car parking - fantastically maintained but if you want to come for an hour or so just to walk the dog you have to pay £5! I think the car parking should be done on a hourly basis and this would then encourage dog walkers. It’s ok if you come from far to see it all and can spend all day but if I want to just take the dog for an hour, it’s not worth spending a fiver!

User

Great place for an afternoon stroll at any time of year. We love taking our Beagle around the all - weather path around the estate, which will be even better when it's extended around the lake. The staff are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about the property and estate. The food and drink in the cafe are well worth trying

User

Good day out but the house tour isn't ideal for children under 5 - the grounds are brilliant and a good place to let the kids run about. The staff in the walled garden were lovely and friendly (my 2y/o loved the freedom of watering all the plants with not real restrictions ÔøΩ) - good day out

User

Not the place to visit if you are on a budget!

We had been mistakenly told £5 to park then the rest was thought to be free. Whilst we didn't expect it to be free we did not expect it to cost £47.40! (3 adults 1 child with one of those adults being a 16 yr old child so we didn't fit the 'family' ticket either) It's no wonder we saw so many people walking to the house and then coming back again! If the National Trust wants people to support it, it needs to price itself to suit the majority of pockets, not just the affluent retired! Very disappointed.

User

Love the house- especially the kitchen. Love the garden and it is our doorstep, local, NT property. Tea shop was ok but staff a bit disorganised and flaky. As a parent of young kids I'm not a member, as places to visit in our region only amount to about 3 attractions, but I would consider it if the NT invested more in young children. Decent playgrounds with up to date, eco-friendly facilities would be a real draw. There isn't anything like this at Blickling, therefore attracting older memberships. Nature trails and 'accessible' museums are fine if you're a tourist for one day, but I always think I will start coming here more when I'm retired!
