About Crafting Curries

Crafting Curries is all about learning to cook authentic Indian food, that is delicious and healthy. Enjoying home-cooked flavours and diverse dishes available in the Indian cuisine is what you will experience in my kitchen.

Crafting Curries Description

Hi, My name is Cathy, born and raised across the length and breadth of this vast country, India, and have my roots in Kerala, South India. My biggest influence, were my mother and my grandmother who created spectacular and flavorsome food that I grew up with.

I got to cooking at a very young age as I stood and watched them creat magic in the kitchen. I picked up tips and well guarded secrets as I assisted them. It was my hobby to collect favourite family recipes, magazine cut outs of traditional recipes and made my very own collection, experimenting all the time.
My previous profession as a trainer and a teacher, merged with my passion with cooking lead to the birth of Crafting Curries.
My mission is to share the art of Indian cooking, showcasing its wide variety and helping others to cook authentic Indian food using fresh produce (mostly organic), exotic spices, and local ingredients.

Can’t be more happier, cooking with the talented Tui Smith and @Carla Lopes today at the Open Door Baptist Church Hall Peterborough. We cooked for 60 homeless and needy, but the sheer joy of just working together for such a great cause was something else. Three starters: veg spring rolls, tandoori chicken and pataniscas served with salad. The mains being: Bean rice served with Thai chicken curry and veg Korma. The trio dessert was chocolate ganache cake, fresh cream and pineapple cake and a special pumpkin fritter cake. The icing on the cake was when they gave us a hearty, clap at the end with big smiles and said “please COME AGAIN!!”

Can’t wait to cook with 2 other prominent chefs tomorrow at the Open Door Baptist Church Hall. “A Festive Feast with a twist for the homeless and needy in Peterborough” by the chef trio .... Each of us bringing our expertise and passion for cooking in serving a lavish 3 course meal. The amazing Tui Smith specialises in Thai food, Carla Lopes who is passionate about Portuguese food and myself bringing the joy of Indian food.

I’ve grown up with Christmas being the season where the whole family joined in to make home made treats and was gifted it to our family and friends. This time it’s our very own grapes that we’ve for the very first time made into some FESTIVE WINE🍷 Have you tried your first attempt in making anything this festive season??

User

As I continue cooking..... Something sweet! Something Christmassy! Wishing you all a sweet and memorable Christmas!!

A brilliant Saturday enjoying the sunshine and cooking a fine selection of Curries from different parts of India with an enthusiastic group. The last course of the season. Had a wonderful 2018 sharing the art of Indian cookery with all my fantastic participants. Thank you for your kind interest and ongoing support.

User

Did you know there is no such thing as curry powder in India?? You mix the seasoning each time using chili powder, coriander, cumin and other spices to create the flavor base. The ratio of each spice varies depending on the dish you cook, to create a balanced taste that complements the ingredients.

Had an interesting morning at the Peterborough Biscuit Exhibitors meeting. Was a fantastic opportunity to meet new business owners and eagerly looking forward to the Peterborough Biscuit now.

Top Tip If you’ve added too much salt in your curry, you can save it. Just add some yogurt or lime juice to neutralise the effect.Top Tip If you’ve added too much salt in your curry, you can save it. Just add some yogurt or lime juice to neutralise the effect.

Wow!! I went expecting to learn how to make a few curries, but came away with an amazing view of India and its varying cuisine. Cathy is wonderful and patiently helps you make the most amazing food that I will definitely make at home. Can’t wait to come again. Thanks Cathy xx

We had a fantastic day learning about Indian cuisine. Catherine was so welcoming and patient with us. Fantastic food, a great teacher, all in all a wonderful day.

User

This was a great way to spend an evening - time well spent. Cathy took us through the steps to create pakoras, onion bhajis and then a lentil dahl, with potato and aubergine accompaniment. She talked us through the qualities of all the spices and ingredients, then took us into the prepping, cooking and serving - paying real attention to tips and details to give dishes an authentic flavour. I used to think my curries were ok, but with Cathy's tips for "tempering", they have gone to the next level. All very relaxed and fun!!!!

User

Spent a lovely day last Saturday at Crafting Curries with Cathy. She was very warm and welcoming and taught us to make some very tasty food that I can’t wait to try out at home. Would definitely recommend for a small group looking to spend a fun few hours learning more about real Indian cuisine.

User

Really good demonstration at Dyke WI.....lovely onion/spinach bhajis. Thanks Cathy....well done. Will book a course soon!

User

Really excellent day learning new tips and techniques for delicious, light and healthy vegan food. Cathy was a great teacher and the atmosphere was relaxed and fun. Would recommend to everyone.

User

It was a wonderful afternoon and a great hands-on course, ending with a shared meal eating what we had cooked. Very highly recommended

User

I went to Cathy's kitchen to learn some basic tips to make curries in general and feel more confident with using spices! she is brilliant at explaining why and how a spice reacts to food and its healthy property. All info. you don't find easily in recipe books! So, after spending a lovely evening cooking and eating with my husband, I can master a simple but very tasty dahl curry and I know how to cook rice perfectly, make chapatis and pakoras confidently. thank you Cathy xxxx

I have just had the most fabulous day with Mum and Sis at Crafting Curries with Catherine George! We had a day learning how to cook Indian Street Food including how to cook Pooris, Papdi Chaat and my favourite, proper onion and spinach bhajis! Yum yum yum yum yum. Lots of other stuff too. Cathy was so attentive and thoughtful, even catering for my gluten free sister at the last minute (I forgot to mention it until yesterday). Cathy’s incredibly knowledgeable and very patient and I definitely recommend her to you if cooking curry is your thing (or even if it isn’t ). I bought these sessions as Xmas gift vouchers for my mum and sis so we could spend quality time together... and we certainly did that. Cathy had done all the laborious peeling and chopping in advance so that we could get on with the more fun side of cooking. I learnt loads about spices and how and when they go in the dishes. Then we ate the lot ... well what we could manage..the rest came home in doggie bags for our boys!

User

I had an amazing day making an eating vegan food. Cathy is so knowledgeable and makes you feel at ease as soon as you walk into her home. I loved that we all got to cook and there was loads opportunities to ask questions. Eating together once we had prepared all the dishes was the perfect way to end this beautiful experience. Highly recommended such a wonderful gift for friends and family or just to treat yourself. I will use the skills I have learnt to keep my vegan diet interesting and healthy

User

I did the ‘Currying through India’ course a few weeks ago. I found Cathy to be very friendly and relaxed in her approach. I wanted to experience cooking a few recipes that I could easily cook at home, and I wasn’t disappointed. Cathy was very informative both on the dishes we cooked and on Indian cookery generally.

The resulting dishes tasted divine and I have cooked some of them again since. The takeaway recipe guide is well laid out for recreating the dishes at home.

I’d highly recommend one of Cathy’s courses for a unique cooking experience.

User

I bought a Gift Voucher for my husband's birthday. He booked on to the Flavours of Kerala and absolutely loved it! He said Cathy was a wonderful teacher and extremely welcoming. He loved learning about why certain flavours and spices are used and he certainly enjoyed eating it all! Highly recommend these courses as gifts. Best thing is I get to eat the outcome too! Thank you Cathy!

User

I attended a vegetarian course with my Dad & had a fantastic experience. Cathy is a natural hostess/teacher & took the time to explain about the properties of each ingredient, regional differences, how to serve and much more besides. There is a great balance between the teaching element and the 'hands on' approach. The food we produced was delicious and we all sat down together to enjoy our dishes. I came away feeling much more confident about using different ingredients & will certainly use the recipes I was given. I highly recommend Crafting Curries and hope to attend another course with Cathy soon.

User

I attended a vegan cookery course last Saturday and had the most wonderful day. Cathy is a fantastic hostess and very knowledgeable about all of the ingredients used and why they are used too. I was made to feel right at home and it was very 'hands on' which I loved. We made so many dishes and each and every one of them was delicious and I especially loved the little 'dinner party' at the end and what a surprise when Cathy presented a pre-made dessert for us to enjoy.

I would recommend the courses to everyone and I look forward to attending another one soon. Thanks Cathy!

User

Had a fantastic day with Cathy at the weekend learning about Vegan food. I’m not vegan but so glad I did it! With Cathy’s wonderfully friendly and supportive tuition we created 7 amazing dishes. Who knew Vegan food could be so tasty?! I’ve already stocked up on my missing spices and can’t wait to give some recipes a try at home. I’ll be back for another course before too long😊
