Cressing Temple Description

Cressing Temple, between Witham and Braintree, is of supreme interest for its unique buildings and gardens. Given to the Knights Templar in 1137, its Grade I-listed Barley and Wheat Barns, built in the 13th century, are among the oldest timber barns and few surviving Templar buildings in England. Displays inside outline the history of the Templars and the site.

Among Cressing Temple’s many gardens, the Walled Garden is faithfully reconstructed as a Tudor pleasure garden - one of few in the country.

Cream teas at 'The Barns' Tea Room and picnics in Cressing Temple's gardens are popular, as well as events and weddings.

Admission and parking at Cressing Temple is usually free. There may be admission charges if there’s an event on – please check our future events on our website or give us a call.

The Big Garden Birdwatch takes pace this weekend from 26 - 28 January. Why not take at trip to your Country Park to spot those birds? Have you seen any new feathered sightings recently? #countryparksnewyou

Take a peek at this little teaser about the Heritage Lottery Fund project that the Friends of Cressing Temple Gardens were recently awarded. We are very excited to see the final copy!

took our 2 year old grandson to see santa & he had a fantastic time. The elfs were so wonderful, they really looked after everyone & even my disabled partner who had a bit of trouble with the stairs, worth every penny spent there, would highly recommend & we look forward to going again next year. Thank you to all the staff & off course santa

We visited Santa’s grotto today and it’s the best Christmas outing we’ve ever had. Staff were amazing- even though I’d mixed up my booking date they were totally accommodating and I can’t thank them enough. The whole experience was very special -we all loved it and I’m sure my daughter will remember it for a long time. Would highly recommend!

We took our 4 year old to see Santa today and it really was magical. It was well organised and all the elves were brilliant interacting with the children and parents perfectly. As for Santa we loved him, he was funny and friendly and the moving props in his room were a great touch - my son said spotting the moving mouse was his favourite bit :) Well worth the money and we'll definitely be back next year.

I went with a friend for a walk in the walled garden. It is just so peaceful and there is always something new to see. The garden is well looked after. Its beautiful.

Its not our first visit and we will certainly go again. Lunch was very nice in the tea room.

I live near Cressing Temple so I'm lucky to go to events often, My Sister loved Cressing Temple and when she passed away last March we held the wake there.

The staff were excellent, they let us have the court house and put a sign outside to stop members of the public coming in, also when we arrived after the funeral there was hail stones coming down but a young lady was standing outside ready to hand us all umbrellas to borrow!

I can understand why people have their weddings there, such a beautiful setting.

The events are always well organised and they cater for all ages.

I absolutely love the place and would recommend it to anyone! :-)

User

Great time at the Medieval Fair today - 8yo and 10yo both loved it. The list of challenges was a brilliant idea to give the activities an aim. All the people were so helpful and friendly, but especially the armour/medical eqpt and coat of arms gentlemen, and the orange+cloves, baker and challenges ladies. The walled garden is fragrant with lots of fascinating plants and info, and beautifully-kept.

Great day had on Thursday Halloween event. Well worth the money.. little one had a great time, first time we have been there even though I once lived just 5 mins down the road, now I live 35 miles away but will defently be going back again in the holidays to see what's going on :-)

User

A lovely, delightful setting. Quiet and quite charming. Lovely clean cafe to lunch in and most attentive service to our lunch requirements by your staff on duty. Sorry I didnt catch the name of our waitress, I was the lady enquiring about the Hot Gooseberrry Chutney. It really was delicious. This lady is a credit to your staff.
