England’s castles are theatres of history. During the medieval period they set the stage for political dramas, wartime stand-offs and family feuds. Once symbols of power and prestige, they now stand as monuments to hundreds of years of history. Discover the stories held within the walls of England’s greatest fortifications and learn about the rise and fall of the medieval castle. https://eht.social/2mk9EPN

Visited Whitby abbey today to see the Dracula performance. It was absolutely fantastic; the actors were great and made it so fun and interactive. I would definitely recommend and will go again!

Just like to say thank you to all the people on the phones. Very courteous in chasing up a replacement membership card and for helping me with santa at Brodsworth at Xmas. Will be renewing again. Good customer service goes a long way in my book.

If you're ever in London having a mooch around like we were today have a look round Parliament Square and tucked down the side of the Abbey and right by Parliament is one of the last remaining parts of the lost Palace of Westminster. It's called The Jewel Tower and while it's not like one of the big English Heritage sites they have packed so much history and information in. While everywhere in London was busy and packed and people were rushing here there and everywhere we got to slow down a bit and experience a bit of London as it once was.

Holy Island Priory - The only reason im giving 5 start is the overall English Heritage as a whole. We went for tickets to the priory and i asked for a family ticket. She asked me if i was a member and if i wanted to buy a season ticket, yes she was doing her job, but then, went into hard sales mode telling me "well you are about to spend a quarter of the £99 on this visit if you do 3 more you have paid for your season ticket. Very good i thought, but not having the money to buy the season ticket i said no again, and then she continued with oh well its only £99 now or you can pay monthly etc, No lady i said for the 4th time. When we were leaving i heard the guy doing the same thing to another family on their way in. No should be no. That spoilt the day and i was on the verge of saying to the lady "don't worry about the tickets" I hope the other sites are not like that.

User

Had an absolute fantastic day at the abbey today well worth a visit, wonderful staff made us and our two dogs very welcome. Great parking, fabulous shop plus tastings and were able to visit everything the abbey, the battlefields and the museum. Then to round it off and we had ice creams and a fresh bowl of water from the reception staff for the dogs. Thank you.

User

Attended medieval festival at the castle with my three boys and husband. We all had a fantastic day boys thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The castle and gardens were charming ... we will defiantly be returning !

User

As Australian's spending a bit of time in the UK, we decided to purchase the family annual membership. Within only a couple of weeks we well and truly got our money's worth. Worth every penny! The staff are always so friendly and the sites are amazing. From busy Stonehenge to the practically deserted Minster Lovell Hall. Always a great family day out. And to get half price at many associated sites is an added bonus.

User

I was lucky enough recently to have the chance to visit Rievaulx Abbey, Whitby Abbey and Helmsley Castle. All these sites were expertly run, very informative and the staff on site were very knowledgeable which only added to the experience. Sadly we then went to view Byland Abbey which is mentioned in writings within Ampleforth Abbey and was so sad to see this site sorely neglected. Just by chance we saw a lady who asked if this was our first visit and when we advised it was, she then provided some very interesting information about the abbey and its history. The lady who now lives mainly in Warwickshire and works at Kenilworth Castle was very emotional as she felt this site has also been 'forgotten' by English Heritage and we could see she was visibly upset. I have to agree as there is a museum on site which was sadly closed, there are metal fences although I am told the work has been completed, the wooden hut is shut but no information on it in relation to the abbey and the main English Heritage poster which explains what is happening is on the side of the metal fence, not at the front where you enter the site!!. English History is something we should all be proud of and I do understand the cost of keeping these places going can be a daunting task but sometimes a little thought and maybe a visit by a member of 'English Heritage' might be in order to restore faith that we are trying our best to retain our 'English Heritage' for generations to come. Please can someone visit Byland Abbey from English Heritage and look at providing better visibility of what you are attempting to achieve for this historical site.

User

I visited Chesters Roman Fort in Northumberland for the first time in several years yesterday. I was impressed with the newly updated signage around the site and even more so with the e- guides in the museum that made the bewildering range of artefacts much easier to interpret. However I was surprised and disappointed by the disappearance from the museum of the marvellous Ronald Embleton paintings that used to grace the guidebooks when I was young. These were real evocative and atmospheric works of art.Come on EH- Bring back Ron!

Have just found token for one of your eggs at Bolsover Castle to be told can't claim as over 16 this was not made clear anywhere at site or on your social media even the staff were unaware of age limit until the photo consent form needed to be filled in one very disappointed member

We bring the kids all the way from London to Beaton Castle to enjoy the jousting for two days, we brought some cheering flags for kids.

The second day we arrived at gate, while kid waved their flags excitedly ,one rude ticket seller asked “Did you pay for the flags?”

I don’t think Anyone should be treat as a suspect thief ,especially a member of “English Heritage”.

User

This is about membership. We signed up a year ago and used the card a lot and saw a lot of great places to be fair. However my issue is with auto renew you do. I phoned to cancel the auto renew a few weeks before our current membership was due to expire. The person I spoke to on the phone at English heritage confirmed that it had all gone through and my membership would be cancelled on 19 May. I checked my bank account today and saw another full year's membership fee has been taken out! Not impressed.

User

Went to stonehenge on Thursday forgot my card. Had to pay full price. Never once was I told I had to keep my card on my person as stated in terms and conditions. Why are members not on a internal system. You've got a separate queuing area for us, its just fucking silly Plus 19.60 to see stonehenge is a joke plain and simple. Most polite people on that entire site were the fucking hippie protesters ! I cant help but wonder how much your top exec is making. Clearly must be taking money from the top. Could only justify the shitty service.

User

The Culture and places are very nice! My review goes only about the membership by itself. I am waiting for months for my card! I phoned them already 5 times and I am still waiting for my membership card, and will leave the UK in two weeks. They got the first time my old adress which I changed on the next day (they had the data not in the system at that time, but could easily write a note and I already have called them again a few days later) by phone call. I called them 4 times after that each week. Post is delivering the parcels in 1 day! All my deliveries from China were faster to get. No costumer friendly service, I asked by phone for money back and they did not make any suggestion. I used the service only once with my temporary card (which now did not work) and I am very disappointed! (Membership number is 007588).

User

Stonehenge was given to the commission of works, for the benefit of the nation. In the deed of gift it states that if you do have to pay, it should be no more than a shilling. That upon payment you should be allowed unfettered access into the monument, English Heritage claim they cannot allow this to protect the monument. But if you pay them £60+, then they will allow you into the centre. If we can't enter on paying £20, then how can they allow access into the monument for £60+. Either you can't let anyone into the centre to protect it, or admit that it is about money and not protection. Not worth the money

User

So disappointed. Bought tickets to Dark Skies, event was cancelled two days later, and my refund is *still* outstanding. I was told it was requested 18th January, and have since been told it should be available in 5-7 working days, 10 working days, 28 days, or that the payment has been made and should already be in my account. I've been promised calls and emails- but have received nothing!

No idea what's going on, I've been told a different story every time I call and now I just want my money back. You were quick enough to take it, and it's a shame such haste hasn't been applied in returning my money!

User

I do not understand how you can charge £20 to visit Stonehenge ,when in the deed of gift it clearly states that nobody should pay more than a shilling (£2) you have a million visitors a year..is £2million not enough for you ??

User

I contacted English Heritage's property the Denny Abbey Farmland Museum to offer a horse drawn plough that I had found on my allotment. According to the internet most of their products went to the USA so I thought it might be unusual. I got no reply to my email so after some days tried the alternative email listed on their website but that does not work. After another week I telephoned and left a message on their answerphone because no-one answered the phone. After another week I telephoned again and finally spoke to a lady who said she had passed the message on to the Collections person who was away until Tuesday. It is not Friday, 3 weeks after my initial offer and no-one has bothered to come back to me. I don't have any problems with the fact that they may not want the item. I do, however, have a problem with the fact that no-one had the courtesy to reply. Not a good advergtisement for English Heritage at all.

User

I am giving English Heritage one star due to their refusal to explain why Students are given a discount on day access and military personnel are not.

I, along with others, have publicly asked this question of English Heritage however they have fudged answers, procrastinated with any kind of explanation and now refuse to acknowledge the question.

Perhaps this question should be thrown open to the general public on a wider social media platform.

What do others think?

Visited Whitby abbey today to see the Dracula performance. It was absolutely fantastic; the actors were great and made it so fun and interactive. I would definitely recommend and will go again!

User

Thank you.

Attended medieval festival at the castle with my three boys and husband. We all had a fantastic day boys thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The castle and gardens were charming ... we will defiantly be returning !
