Fishermans Return

About Fishermans Return

Traditional Country Pub by the Sea

Fishermans Return Description

Popular with visitors and locals alike, the Fishermans is at the heart of Winterton-on-Sea. It started out as a beer house and was once known as Juby's, before becoming the Fishermans Arms and finally the Fishermans Return. The pub has a history of long serving publicans, with just 4 changes of ownership in the last 100 years; the most recent being when after 34 years, Kate and John Findlay handed over the keys to Darrin in 2009.

Parents who have taken their child(ren) to other schools and those who are currently not at Winterton Primary and Nursery are most welcome to attend the meetings with the IEB on Tuesday 11th September at 1.30pm and the Consortium Multi Academy Trust on Tuesday 18th September at 6pm to hear more; these meetings are not just for those parents who have pupils currently on roll.

There is an informal meeting for parents and the school staff with the Chief Executive of the Consortium Multi Academy Trust on Monday 3rd September at 7pm at Winterton Primary School. There will be no prepared presentation, but questions will be able to be asked and the formal presentation will still go ahead on Tuesday 18 September. It is hoped that parents will see what a great opportunity this is, CMAT is keen to support the school

come to Norfolk every summer on holiday and this is the best pub there I have been too! The food is top notch here and staff are so friendly! good vibes all round!

User

Well I really don’t know where to start... we’ve been holidaying in Hemsby & Winterton-on-Sea for about 12 years & never got round to visiting this place until Friday evening this week - the last evening of our stay this year & wow how I wish we’d tried it sooner.

I read a lot of the poor reviews, but thought I’ll give it a go - all I can say is about their experience is that ours was the polar opposite.

We were made welcome immediately by staff & the locals - I even got a cuddle with Jacko the Rottweiler & his dad (I didn’t cuddle his dad). The fact that the pub is a dog friendly affair is a major plus for us & there were plenty of people both inside & out with dogs of all shapes & sizes. Doggie owners paradise.

Anyway we grabbed a table outside in the glorious weather & ordered our substantial meals which arrived earlier than we expected, they were piping hot & delicious - the portions were generous & we left with full bellies & extremely happy that we’d given the place a try. The ONLY negative part of the experience was that we had to leave the next morning to travel 3 hours back home, but we will be returning for day trips to the beach and a meal here.

My advice if you’re in the area is ignore the poor reviews & visit the place & make your own mind up - I doubt you’ll be anything other than 100% happy.

Welcoming and friendly atmosphere with good variaties on the menue.

User

We've been coming to this pub for 20 years and it never fails to deliver. The atmosphere is so welcoming, the dogs always made a fuss of and the food is exceptional. Yes when they are busy (as it has been over Christmas/New Year) the food can take time to come but the staff always explain the waiting time when it is ordered and often it arrives sooner than their conservative estimate. Can't rate it highly enough and hopefully we will continue to enjoy their hospitality for another 20 years.

User

We have spent the last 2 weeks on holiday at Winterton on sea and we have eaten nearly everyday at this pub the food was absolutely superb every time ,there were no long waits the staff are very friendly made you feel very welcome and our 3 dogs ,we had some great laughs here and will def be back next year 10/10

User

We have just returned from a 4 night stay. Cannot praise the place highly enough. Our room was excellent and very clean. We had our dog with us and he was made to feel very welcome. All staff were attentive and the food was amazing. 5 minute walk to a stunning beach. Would not hesitate to recommend the Fishermans. Thank you.

User

We had the fish & chips. They was delicious. The batter on the fish was lovely & crispy & I had to eat it all!!!(I hate soggy batter)!! And they love Dogs. Will definitely be back.

User

We couldn’t have been happier with this lovely pub, extremely friendly and welcoming!! Great pub food and a good pint of Guinness(according to my husband) . Beautiful cosy fire too. The real winner for us was how dog friendly the pub is. Looking forward to visiting the pub and village again. A big thumbs up from us😃

User

We always make a point of visiting most evenings when we stay because we feel so at home here. We get a lovely welcome. Kids and dogs welcome inside and out. Plenty of room and lovely food. Always piping hot. It's usually a long wait for food but we know that and come a tad earlier than starving. Staff look exhausted by the end of the day. I don't know where they get there energy from. Well done all!

User

Visited here in January, as always beautiful pub, dog friendly, lovely food, real ale and friendly staff, what more could anyone want.

Hope to visit again soon.x

User

Visited Friday evening, very busy but we sat in the extended part with bonus of the tv for the football and the pool table for the grand children. Excellent meal, quite a bit of a wait, but it was very busy. We realised that we didn’t really need a starter and main, as couldn’t eat it all!

User

The pub is lovely a nice warm open fire, very dog friendly with lots of dog treats, the staff were very friendly and the food was the best will definitely return.

User

The pub itself is extremely friendly and we had a great night talking to the locals. Was lovely to be able to take our dog out to dinner with us.

Beautiful Village pub. Amazing food and good selection of beers. Dog and child friendly. The staff make the visit even better. 3rd year in Winterton, the beach, dunes and Fishermans Return is what pulls us back each year. 10/10 from someone who has been to a lot of pubs!

User

Another great evening with great food. Lots of socialising for us and the dog. We’ve been coming here for 15 years and will keep coming back.

3rd year returning to Winterton and the main reason we come back is because of this pub.

All staff are brilliant and so friendly! The food is amazing! And the atmosphere is like no other!

We had a lovely evening meal on Tuesday. Great service, friendly and scrummy food.

Enjoyed playing board games and a game of darts!

Shall be returning again soon.

User

Lovely staff, food and service such a variety and dogs got a treat or two. Would of gave 5 stars if chips were better as wasnt as nice as last year bit dry. Can't wait to return year

User

I mostly concur with Terry, however, the range of real ales is somewhat limited/similar. The Skippers and IPA's could have come out of the same barrel or brewery. If you're a Larger or Cider person, no problem. Good food ,excellent friendly staff, brill atmosphere and pleasant surroundings BUT!! What really annoys me, 'The Whisky Cellar'...it really cheapens the whole effect when packets of nuts, crisps etc a jammed in front of the bottles, one would think they were in a lower class of establishment!

Come on landlord it's those little finer points than make all the difference.

Enough said, I'll be back again shortly... love it

User

Great value pub grub, in a great little village.

Dog Friendly, highly recommended

User

Great meal, we got here when it opened but 30mins in and a hour wait on food. Got talking to others and it was the same last year. Would not be waiting an hour for food.

User

Fantastic village pub and rooms. Great selection of beers, whisky’s and gins. Great food too !

User

Excellent food, staff great. The Wherry was just on the turn but still drinkable

User

Picked the Beef Lasagne from a quite extensive menu, accompanied by a bowl of chips. The wife had a baked potato with tuna and sweetcorn filling. Having eaten at the Fishermans Return on numerous occasions in the past, I waited eagerly for my meal to arrive. Super quick service, but sadly although the lasagne itself was quite tasty the portion size was almost negligible. Given the quite hefty price tag I was very disappointed. Plenty of salad and the garlic bread which accompanied the dish was tasty, couldn't get past the smallish portion. The chips were excellent, but not upto previous high standards. Just had the feeling the Pub is trading on past glories and has maybe forgotten to maintain their once very high standards. The wife enjoyed her generous sized potato and filling, again served with substantial salad. Shame, as I had endured a lengthy walk, and consequently built up a healthy appetite, in order to reach the pub in the first instance.

User

Enjoyed a lovely lunch. Staff very friendly except one woman who we guessed was the manager. Very disappointed not to be able to order desserts at 3.50pm as the kitchen had now closed for 1.5hrs at 3.45pm. When ordering our main courses we had mentioned we'd be ordering desserts but were not told the kitchen would close at all. This woman staff member bluntly told us "it's on the board" but we read all the boards we could find and could not see any mention of the kitchen closure times. Surprised they couldn't rustle up four ice creams but obviously didn't want or need to make us feel valued customers.

User

Strange but we also had to wait for a "missing plate" of food that was explained away by "we can only cook 4 cod at a time" but poor that we were half way through meal before 5th turned up after a visit to the bar and 2visits to the table by different people, presume they thought we were trying to blag a 5th meal, used this pub when in area for couple of years now, it used to be a gem but after this last visit was pretty average, food ok but wouldn't make an effort to visit unless in Winterton.

User

Been coming here for years when in the area always been lovely until yesterday, we popped in on fricday too book a table only too be told they only take bookings if its for more than 10 people, so imagine our surprise when we arrive Saturday too see the table by the door with reserved on it, with only 4 people sitting around it, Anyway we eventually get a table, and ordered but was told there was a 45 min wait for food, which would have been OK, however, an hour goes by, no food people who turned after us were on their puddings, waited another 10 mins, asked a passing waiter, he looked surprised and said ill get back to you, comes back after 5 mins, saying it'll be 5 more mins, by the time we got our food it was over 2 hours since we ordered, my goulash was barely warm, the wife's quiche was burnt, we did got a half hearted apology, not sure who she was, needless to say very disappointing. Oh and no nog or nelsons revenge on tap either to add insult to Injury.

User

The owner is very rude , all other staff wonderful and food lovely but if you want to be spoke down to from the owner this is the place

User

I worked as bar staff for three months and cannot fault the management or staff only the owner let's the place down, made a false accusation towards me in front of customers and staff and sacked me publicly for supposedly giving away a free burger because he could not find the receipt, when I explained that I did take payment and assured that if the cameras where checked this would be seen clearly. Still a day later no cameras have been checked, he's slated me publicly and left me out of a job!

- update

Been almost two weeks every attempt I’ve made to contact the pub has been brushed off or ignored, went in today to calmly ask to see the footage to once again only to be shouted at by the owner, claims the footage hasn’t been checked and the 2 week loop means it runs out on Sunday and any possibility of clearing my name will be out the window. He’s also stated he will have no contact with me unless via solicitors, suppose it isn’t his livelihood on the line!

User

come to Norfolk every summer on holiday and this is the best pub there I have been too!

User

User

Such a lovely pub, great food and lovely staff. We visited @Fisherman's Return 3 times on our 5 day stay!

User

Six of us went for a meal this evening .. it was a lovely meal very reasonable priced and we only has a 20min wait for our food all the bar and service staff were friendly and helpful we ate inside and sat outside to have another drink which as it was a lovely warm evening was really pleasant would recommend

User

Lovely kind staff, very friendly & attentive. Food always hot & lots of it!! Puds fantastic...highly recommend this pub to everyone who has the opportunity of visiting Winterton on sea.

User

Just on our way home from a lovely weekend away in Winterton & we really enjoyed visiting the Fisherman Returns for dinner. The food was delicious and the service & staff were excellent. The pub itself is extremely friendly and we had a great night talking to the locals. Was lovely to be able to take our dog out to dinner with us.

User

Great pub, good food, excellent staff, very dog friendly

Visited most nights on our week away, lovely chatting to other holidaymakers and the locals.
