Truly unique pub in a remotel area of marshland on the southern end of the Norfolk Broads. Power from its own generator. Great food: the steak chilli con carne was the best I've ever had. Sunday afternoon music help make it a memorable day. Definitely worth a visit.

User

One of the nicest pubs in the southern part of the Broads

One day which wasn't quite today or yesterday we caught the Magical Mystery Tour Bus and set off upon a fine adventure. A splendid time was guaranteed for all! We all boarded the Yellow Submarine at the mythical village of Gelderstone and Old Fred pushed a button and away we went underwater all the way up the mystical River Waveney to a place of natures magic on the Riverside, Ye Olde Gelderstone Locks Inn. A place of Old Ancient Bearded Mummers and Storytellers and the strolling minstrels of the Lore of Murphy who did sing and play and spread much merriment abroad and afar. The trees were full of fairies and pixies and little folk all a frolicking in the river. The ale did flow and mead was sweet as the sun went down. All too soon Old Fred beckoned us back to the Yellow Submarine and took us all home before we left or was it just a summers dream ?

User

My friend and I drove there from North Norfolk for Sunday's shindig..we really loved it. Super friendly landlord, the place was filled with genuine good Irish music with at least 7 musicians playing jigs an singing ballads. Candles burning..everybody smiling and happy. Dog friendly. Very yummy crisps behind the bar. It was really nice and we'll definitely go again.

User

Lovely walk over from Beccles today. Hoping the Locks would be open after all the flooding of late. A huge warm welcome , lovely roaring fire, great beer...Oak by Grain Brewery Aldeby, and amazing good hot tucker....mushroom and Stilton pie, piping hot and lots of it. We love the Locks....Alfie our furbeast can always get a chair by the Woodburner.

User

It is what it is a proper beer pub with nice food young and friendly staff you have to go with the flow and enjoy the experience it is not the pubs fault that they have been ''discovered'' by bar hoggers!

User

Had our wedding reception there on Saturday and it was awesome. The bbq food that they put on for us was fantastic, couldn't of asked for better! Staff are so friendly and helpful. Hope you enjoyed the rest of our cakes/donuts we left for you and get use of the jars that we used for decorations. Definitely will be a place to return too and be reminded of the memories we made there. Thanks again for everything Mr and Mrs Shepherd x

User

Had a Ploughman’s at the Locks today. Got to say it was the best I have had in many years.

Lovely location and well worth the drive.

Will certainly be going back again.

User

Great pub, great food ,great staff, great lazy Sunday afternoon spent in the sun.

User

Great music, good food for the adults and the kids alike. Friendly oldly worldly British pub. What's not to like.

User

Exceptional quality and variety of beer, cider and gin. Very good food at a reasonable price. Staff are friendly and knowledgable. Highly recommend this gem of a pub. We will be back (again).

User

Lovely location. Can wait a while sometimes to get a drink or food but overall very nice atmosphere in the gardens especially on a sunny day and if there is a good band on

User

Great walk from Beccles along the river path 1hr 50min went for the famous Curry night

Curry flavours were fab but small portion was a bit disappointing popadom and pickles (sweet chilli out of a bottle mango chutney same needs improvements) wife said ladies loos disgusting and it wasn't busy!

Up your game as you have a fab pub that we will visit again Just needs a small attention to detail to make it 10 out of 10

User

First time I have been and was impressed , would definitely return

User

Excellent band (More Madness)

Excellent venue - can't beat the sun shining beside the river

BUT ..... what the hell was it with the three quarters of an hour queue for drinks???

Suggestion: A separate soft drinks bar outside and a couple more staff on. 🤷🏻‍♀️

User

Whilst the pub appeared all traditional and olde worlde it was possibly somewhere I would visit more often ... With improvements being noted. Having bothered to drive over from Kessingland. (Being new to Suffolk life) there were areas of disappointment although loved the twee little area by the main bar.

BUT ...

The dirt track to get there kills your vehicles with pot holes deep enough to cause damage to some vehicles. I'm guessing as tractor and heavy vehicles track it's probably not noticeable.

Additionally, having turned up on a busy evening (winter solstice) there were only two bar staff serving drinks, with queues at the bar in both directions out the doors. There seemed to be more staff periodically walking back and forth without any initiative or inclination to help out when it was clearly needed.

I note that alot of the complaints are about toilets and service provision and queues and it seems, despite the regular complaints, the current owners have NO intention of changing or improving things.

Advice: For the sake of having to pay minimum wage (as seems prevalent in Suffolk) and getting extra staff in to help, any improved quality of service provision would pay significant dividends over time and improve client turnover and perception. In turn further increasing turnover and profit margins.

Although surrounding countryside was dark and the track was unlit when I arrived, I assumed surrounded by fields of arable farmland, I sense the 'pub' is likely a working farm first and foremost, with the bar and restaurant being a 'tacked on' afterthought to increase farm use and turnover.

A brilliant idea and practice when done correctly, but probably best left alone as its being done currently.

I'll watch this page with interest going forward to see if and how things improve before returning again.

User

I think they were overwhelmed today with lots of people coming for the music. I couldn't fault the staff it was just the fact that there were long queues for drinks, the toilets looked like a bomb had gone off and far too many dirty plates and glasses. If you want to improve things then I would suggest you hire more staff.

User

To dark inside even in daylight, needs a good clean especially in and around the bar it was cold and for me hot food served on cold plates is a big no .

User

The second time a group of my red hat chapter have gone to this hostelry on Big Dog Ferry. Service was so offhand and poor last time we have used The Wherry instead. Gave it another try today having booked a table for our group. Very difficult to attract any staff to serve drinks behind the bar [just like last visit] No salads available [waiting for a food delivery!] They managed to produce a very small dish of salad leaves with half a cherry tomato and some cut up ham for one of the group for £8.50! One of the two ladies toilets out of order and the other one full to the brim and horrible. So Geldeston Locks ... We'll be getting the ferry to The Wherry in future where they are very welcoming!
