We offer counselling to those suffering loss of their baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, termination or infant death. Supporting those with infertility

Alternatives is a professional counselling service that offers support through our team of dedicated trained counsellors and psychotherapists for those suffering the loss of a pregnancy through miscarriage, termination, and still birth and to support those with issues around infertility.

As an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) we are bound by its Code of ethics and Practice and complaints procedure.

All sessions are confidential unless there are serious concerns about your safety. If we are concerned we will always discuss this with you and look at options for further help. Client work is taken into supervision but no clients are ever identified.

There is an initial assessment to hear an outline of the client’s story and to give an overview of who we are and how we work. This gives an indication to whether counselling at this point could be helpful from both the client and counsellors perspective.
Once a counsellor has been allocated they will be in touch to arrange a suitable time to meet. Each session will last for 50 minutes. We suggest an initial 6 sessions which will be reviewed and extended to 18 sessions if needed. These can be extended again to meet the clients needs. If you are going to be late or miss a session please inform your counsellor as soon as possible so the time can be reallocated for that day.

We do not wish to exclude anyone from counselling on financial grounds. We operate a sliding- scale system so basically you can pay anything from £20 – £40 for each session depending on your financial situation. We will give you a client agreement form at your assessment to take away with you. The completed agreement with how much you can pay needs to be brought back to your first session. If a session is missed without 24 hours notice we will ask you to contribute half your agreed fee.
We also offer couple counselling by our specialist trained couple counsellor who can offer you an initial 6 sessions. Suggested donations for each session is between £25 -£60.

Please note that although we are able to offer clients information on all the options and are well-resourced to provide both immediate and long term support as necessary, we do not refer women directly for a termination.
