About Herts Trf Trail Riders Fellowship

The organisation that represents responsible trail riders
Preserving historic, public rights of way for the benefit of all user groups

Herts Trf Trail Riders Fellowship Description

Thank you for you interest in the TRF and in particular the Herts and North London group which I am proud to chair. We are committed to trail and adventure riding and maximising return on our investment in this activity. We are the faster growing TRF group nationwide and in across the past 18 months the Herts group has almost doubled in size from 100 to approaching 200 active riders.

The TRF as a national organisation was founded in Hertfordshire with the inaugural meeting being held at the Valiant Trooper in Tring in 1972.

Maintaining our Rights of Way (ROW) is the foremost concern of the TRF and we usually have 2 to 3 ongoing cases at anyone time with the TRF defending our members rights. Herts TRF are particularly strong on ROW with 2 ROW officers leading the way in National Best practice and pride ourselves on excellent relationships with the councils and other ROW groups whom we hold in respect. .

Contrary to misinformed opinion that the number of rideable lanes is falling. – several “new” lanes have been discovered and made useable for our members.

If there is one question we get asked most frequently from new or about to become new trail /adventure bike owners is “where can I ride locally and how often do you go out?”

Nationally in the UK the TRF use around 3000 miles of byways and green lanes of which a full around 125 miles are right here in Hertfordshire and more across the wider North London area

Last years TRF numbers

125 miles of green lanes in Herts alone
5 new lanes identified and recorded
180 members up from 90 – highest growth in TRF nationally
16 run leaders committing to 1 run per quarter (now 21 run leaders! )
over 60 Herts TRF runs per year available to members (and literally 100s nationally)
2 Public Inquiries attended
2 police stops of Herts TRF members legitimately riding on green lanes
2 complaints made to the Police – both upheld in favour of the TRF with written apologies
2 TRF Rights of Way officers in Hertfordshire
1 Rights of Way meeting with over 50 riders trained
0 successful prosecutions nationally since 1974 where the TRF has never lost a case defending a member from a right to ride green lanes.
We try to ride out between once a week in the summer to once every other week win winter on average and cater for all abilities from beginner / novice to experienced enduro riders and cover around 90-100 miles with riders free to drop off at any time.

As you expect our route leaders and sweepers are very experienced including several ex police motorcyclists and enduro competition riders, which keeps our rides professional, steady, smooth and progressive.

We have female members and new women riders are made welcome.

All bikes are catered for on rides from a simple XR125 to the mighty 1200 GS.

As a group we are also handy with a spanner, or a soldering iron. We go at a steady pace that allows beginners time to progress as they wish. No one gets left behind on a ride… ever.

Goals across this year 2014 we are working on achieving

Recovering our right to ride lost and secret lanes.
Rides out on average once per week normally Sundays with occasionally Saturday or midweek
Once per month open rides for non members /beginners
Elite rides for faster / more experienced members
2 day ride starting at Watford North London to Wells next the Sea (Hunstanton) on the Norfolk coast
Around the M25 ride on green lanes (big and small bike)
A special TRF trip to the Stella Alpina Rallye in the French /Italian Alps July
Trips to Isle of Man, Wales, Devon and the Peak District.
Stand and demonstrations at Bikefest Stevenage, the Herts county show in August and the MCN Carole Nash Motorcycle show in London Exel
We look forward to seeing you on of our events

Normally held on the 1st Saturday of the month - and occasionally by special request held on Sunday to allow those with commitments to attend.
Current members are also very welcome to give the bike a run and coach any prospective new members.

Herts TRF Weekend at Sweet Lamb Adventure Rally Bike Academy
We had a great weekend here last year so I’ve decided to run another weekend on the 28th – 30th June.
We will be based at the Sweet Lamb centre which is in the middle of about 6000 acres of private land in Mid Wales, with miles and miles of fast flowing gravel tracks and then slightly more technical tracks up into the hills. See http://www.adventurerallybike.co.uk/ for more details.
... Mark Molineux and his very experienced team will be on hand for the whole weekend, helping to feed us and make sure we have an excellent weekend of riding.
Training is available (to all levels) for those that want it and for those that don’t we will be trail riding on the Saturday and Sunday, on site, off site and on other private areas to which Sweet Lamb have exclusive access (although that depends on forestry activity on the day, so no guarantees).
The price is £181. That includes accommodation on Friday and Saturday night in the bunkhouse. It includes a cooked breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday mornings and a BBQ dinner on the Saturday night. You'll need to cater for yourself on the Friday on the way to site. The food is good, but you must let me know well in advance if you need vegetarian food or anything else please, more complex requests will be hard to cater for as you are miles from anywhere. Tea and Coffee is unlimited and there is a fridge for you to bring your own booze. You can arrive on site from about 4pm.
See here for pictures of the accommodation http://www.adventurerallybike.co.uk/sweet -lamb-bunk-house/. The accommodation is very basic, but it’s warm and comfortable. You’ll need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and torch (the generator turns off at night).
If you want to, you can stay off-site but the price won’t change. Similarly you can camp in a tent in the camping area if you don’t want to share, but again the price won’t change.
There is a maximum of 20 places and I need 10 to run it.
I expect the majority to be on smaller trail bikes or enduro bikes but if you want to, larger bikes are OK but you’ll have to be confident riding it off road, if you want to leave the site for the trial riding. Also, if you want to leave the site the bike must be road legal and insured. If you are happy to stay on site only then that isn’t necessary.
Please try to arrive fully fueled and if you can, bring a 20L jerry can full. It makes things much easier, especially if you stay on site.
Only payment secures your booking, call me on 07866 777 928 or email on bnewham@gmail.com to arrange. Because of the minimum of 10 riders I cannot easily organise refunds. The price is the price charged by Sweet Lamb and all money will be transferred by me to them. I am just organising this and will not be actually running it on the day.

GPS is an invaluable aid to many trail riders, enabling our exact location to be displayed upon a map as well as allowing us to 'track’ and follow routes.
By far the most popular GPS amongst trail riders is Garmin’s Montana series, which Gavin Seiler a Senior Road Conservation Officer and Project Manager for the TRF Green Road Map will be doing an evening refreshers session
£5 on the night toward room hire
... A full day limited workshop is also available in January (£20) on the day fee towards the room costs

Former Senior Police Officer Steve Mann, a Senior TRF Road Conservation Officer does by far & away the best and most concise members' Rights of Road presentation.
Back by popular demand here is the place to set the record straight of where you can and can't ride and why. It is aimed at introducing members to understand their entitlement to Rights of Road and engaging members into taking their next steps into Roads Conservation.
▪ Public rights of way & roads... ▪ BOATs ▪ TROs and PTROs ▪ UCRs. ▪ ORPAs ▪ How to check legality. ▪ The LoS ▪ The Authorities – HA CC & LAFs ▪ User Groups LARA, TRF, GLASS, BHS,CTC,RA ▪ The TRF Road Conservation Team ▪ What we the TRF and as individuals do ▪ Our successes and failures ▪ Next steps for the TRF and yourself.
This presentation covers in across an enjoyable evening the basic knowledge that every TRF member should have. We will be giving a certificate to attendees.
ADVANCED TRAINING - The John V masterclass - advanced presentation in the history of roads and our understanding entitlements Beaulieu a couple of years back. This would certainly be worth travelling for and I will ask him to schedule this in later next year.
£5 on night fee towards the room costs to include a TRF Training Certificate
