I was wondering if you could help. My dad was in Ganges, I think 57 - 59.
His name was James Stevens. He went on to become a stoker then joined the dark side and became a regulator.
My dad died in 84 aged 42. If anyone knows any good dits about him during his service I'd love to hear them. If you could put this on your page I'd really appreciate it.
... Yours aye,
LS MJ Stevens HMS Eaglet. Michael 'Shakey' Stevens.

For those who have yet to see WI member Lin Howell's video of Shotley's Sunset Colours ceremony on Remembrance Day. Now's your chance. The WI do a fabulous job all year round, and stepped up yet again in getting the hall ready and providing food for the Scouts to serve at the special Remembrance concert put on by the Suffolk Concert Band with the Royal British Legion's Buglers. Sarah Thompson has this coin and would like to know more about it. Does anyone else have one, is it the one given to the Button Boy?

More images from a moving and poignant day. BZ to all involved in putting together services, concerts, exhibitions, Sunset ceremonies, beacon lighting and more, which were so well supported. http://shotleypeninsulanewsandfeatures.co m/Remembrance-1918…

Went to the Ganges museum with my wife as a birthday treat on Sunday 2nd July 2017.

Originally passed through the gates on the 22nd October 1974 as one of the 6 week wonder boys. Of course this only meant the majority of our training was done elsewhere, in my case HMS Mercury.

The museum is a real throwback in time and incredibly enjoyable, full of interesting artefacts and stories. The ex matelots that take loving care of the museum are friendly and informative. They are more than happy to swing a lamp and swap dits, even tho one of them is an ex crusher. Expect to take a ribbing if you're a sprog - obviously!

One slight disappointment was that there is not a lot of information on the latter years. One of the reasons I went was to try and find information on how the time I spent there went in order of events, but little information was available. I donated a couple of photos (they take copies) and if more people could donate, the museum would be incredibly grateful.

The museum deserves the support of all who passed through those gates and the government. The state of the mast was heart breaking and as the builders who have not started constructing the housing estate for 15 years, it would have been nice to have access to the buildings that still exist.

Visited this museum yesterday what a great place. The staff who were volunteers could not do enough for us so much so that we went back again today. A must for everyone !!!

User

Very very interesting. We would have stayed longer but it was getting late. Also would have loved to go round the actual site. Shame its so run down.

My partner worked there as a plumber/ fitter in the 70's so had some tales to tell the volunteers at the museum.

My mum and I visited the HMS Ganges museum yesterday in Shotley. It's dedicated to the 160,000 boys who passed through the Royal Navy Training Establishment in Shotley Gate between 1905 and 1976. I now live in the old Naval School House (which has been converted into flats). The museum is run by such kind and informative volunteers and is full of emotive pictures, maps and other memorabilia. Do visit if you get the chance. And then visit St. Mary's church in Shotley and see the immaculately kept WWI & WWII memorials and war graves.

I served at HMS Ganges in 1964 as a new recruit...

Fascinating place to visit for anyone with the slightest interest in Ganges, the Royal Navy, war heroes or Shotley peninsula history.

Best thing I ever did, Became a boy sailor at 15 and a half an the a Radio Operator on Carriers, Destroyers and Diesel Boats. I now live in Canada as a result of serving in 6th S/M Squadron in Halifax NS. Been here since June 1964. Just celebrated my 80th birthday and enjoying life.

All the staff are so welcoming and really friendly. Maybe they’re not all ex pussers or ex Ganges but this not detract from their enthusiasm for the museum or the bods who just walk through the door.

Will certainly re visit.

User

A real pleasure to visit, the volunteer staff are so helpful. I've been back twice this year and probably 10 times in all.

User

A fascinating place even if you've never heard of HMS Ganges before. Volunteer staff always happy to tell you all about it and their personal experiences of the place.

A Museum that warrants a high status in the UK. Seeing the display you are reminded of the thousands of men and women that passed through, and that there's thousands of families today that may be unaware of the link they may have with this establishment. I enjoyed my visit very much and loved the atmosphere to which the volunteer staff contributed a great deal.
