The Lake at Holkham
The lake, for the most part, follows the line of the original tidal creek, which was dammed and excavated to create what is now a very large and beautiful stretch of water. It is a haven to wildlife. The Nature Trail follows the line of the freshwater lake and has 28 information panels full of interesting facts about the plants, insects and animals to be found here. For a chance to explore Holkham’s watery world, why not hire a rowing boat, canoe or kayak?
Boat Hire - Rowing Boats
This is one of the country’s strongest sports and you can come and get some of the action here at Holkham. The lake is over a mile long with a couple of islands for an added challenge to test your boat handling skills. Each boat seats up to five people.
Boat Hire - Canoes
Our Canadian canoes are great for a Ray Mears’ style adventure around the lake. Suitable for adults and children, this historical mode of transport has barely changed in thousands of years and is still widely used today for recreation and for hunting and fishing. Each canoe seats two to three people.
Boat Hire - Kayaks
If you are ready for a great splash about then this is the activity for you. Each kayak seats one person and the sheltered lake is the perfect place for this activity. Our kayaks are suited to novice paddlers and the trick is to start gently.
Please note that there is a minimum height requirement of 1 metre for all lake activities.
