About Lk Sport Horse Training & Livery-Northchurch

At LK Sport Horse we break, train, produce, compete and source happy athletic horses. We are constantly moving forward in understanding our equine friend.

Lk Sport Horse Training & Livery-Northchurch Description

At LK Sport Horse we provide the best of care for you and your horse. With over 40 years of experience in the equestrian industry working with some of the biggest names in show jumping, eventing and dressage, we know what is needed to run a livery yard with a great environment in which to train.

Our Experience

At LK Sport Horse we have broken, produced and worked alongside
some of the top names in all three equestrian disciplines for over 3 decades. Horses are our passion and we pride ourselves with happy, healthy consistent competition horses. We only take on clients and their horses that we know will be happy at our yard, as a good fit is a huge contributing factor to the success of your stay. So, if we can not meet all your requirements we will be upfront, we are not in the business of wasting anyone's time and money, as moving is expensive and stressful for all involved.

New Horses

All new arrivals are in isolation for 2 weeks, this is a protection for all the horses on the yard. They can still be exercised and turned out but only on their own during this period. All horses are on an individual training /feeding program depending on their body type, learning capacity and their age. Horses are on a worming program and we ask that all horses have regular yearly check ups with the dentist and physio. Our back up team of professionals, are always at the other end of the phone if we need them. They are all at the top of their game and have worked along side us for over 20 years. Our owners and liveries are a bunch of lovely people who have stayed with us for years because of the service and attention we give them and their horse /horses. Some that have moved have returned to us for one reason or another. Our horses, students and clients over the years are our testimony.
We have a warm cozy tack room with on tap free refreshments to help with those cold winter days. Spare jackets and gloves and warm clean dry socks because we know the little things make the difference.

Our Clients

Our clients are based all over the world and repeat business and referrals are our main business Especially souring horses that are specific to your needs. We provide a privacy service for those in the film industry as well as for those who want to keep their identity undisclosed.

Our ethos

The way a horse is educated and the environment in which they live is pivotal to a horses personality. When we start our youngsters we want them to learn as much about their environment as possible. So we make sure that the youngster is OK and confident with everything we put them too. Different bits, plastic and metal, rattling metal stirrups, lose fitting floppy nose bands and the jingle and flapping of martingales and stirrups. Wearing floppy saddle cloths or no saddle cloths and wearing different boots including floppy over reach boots. Rugs that make a noise and hoods that go over their face. We do this because we have no idea what their new owners will decide to use and wear on them, so we try and cover as much as we can, so that the youngster learns to be OK and confident with everything that comes their way. We also do a bit of join up with them and try and make their education fun, this really makes a difference to their attitude on learning and sets them on the right tract for the rest of their life.
Please Note:
That we do not encourage or take on horses younger than 3 and a half as we believe the horse is not physically or mentally ready - We believe age classes are destroying our talented horses and breaking and producing young horses will lead to physical and mental problems down the line.

Our History

A list of a few top horses we have broken over the years include:
Velinni-Micheal Whitakers Top international grey stallion
Mr Merridock- Olymipic Team Gold 2008 Germany Eventing Team.
Bambee Z- Babminton young horse champion
Quick De Darem - Our own Grand Prix horse Ranked 14th in 2002.
To name just a few.
Films we have worked on.
Harry Potter, Wolf Man, Alexandra, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Clash Of The Titans,
Louis has broke, trained and produced flat racers, broken horses to film sets and trained them for stunts he evented for 4 seasons each year finishing in the top 20 % .

We also offer a none bias service in finding you the right horse, with an assessment lesson and our honest opinion on what you need, which is not necessarily what you want. A leasing package for those that do not want to commit to ownership or just the one off lunge /lesson to tweak your balance or to help your confidence or fitness.

Athletic happy horses love their jobs as we love ours. Whatever your equestrian need i'm sure we can help. If you have any questions about any of our services or ethos of training horses you are welcome to call or even better, you can pop down and watch us train and meet the horses, all of which we have started and produced ourselves.

Training with the 3B System The next time you school your horse why not think of the 3B's . Breath-Balance-Believe. You can think of them in any order but if you don't actively do the 3B's the skill of riding a horse well, will never be fully realized : BREATH- Breathing helps on so many levels. It relaxes you so your muscles can work and you can be at one with your horses movement, It keeps you thinking clearly about what you need to do and it stops you from getting angry an...d frustrated as it keeps you calm. BALANCE- If you are not in balance with your horse you effect the horse on so many levels. So continually think about your balance and readjust it accordingly, going around a corner, circles, flying changes, approaching a jump, in flight, on landing etc etc if you work on your balance rather than focus about where your horses head is your horse will find it easier to find his own balance and will then be able to work in a better outline for you. BELIEVE- If you don't understand and truly believe in your training methods than you and your horse will never progress. You HAVE to understand why you are asking for things and when you give or train an aid, which is just like teaching a language you have to believe that it is the right. way, otherwise your horse will never believe you. When you believe you trust, so do you trust your trainer and does your horse trust you? You have to believe in your training system, if you don't you need to ask yourself why? Working on the 3B's will never let you down. You will be a better rider no matter how good you are now. Deborah King

Be careful as colic is very common when it snows. Especially as grass is fermenting under the snow. So once snow had melted turn out for shorter periods as grass will be very rich.

You could not ask for a more dedicated, knowledgable, fun, and friendly pair to look after your horses.

Deb gives great lessons - you are guaranteed to come away with a sense of achievement and challenge, looking forward to your next session with her.

Cookie is a fantastic rider, you can trust him to break in your youngsters with skill and patience and produce a winner.

Their amazing team of happy and healthy (and gorgeous) sport-horses are testament to their high level of horsecare. I wouldn't have anyone else in the UK look after mine; I trust them 100%. They will always put the horses' interests before their own.

They treat every customer with the same respect and love - whether you own a little pony or a string of show jumpers.

This mum and son team work so well: best family business I've ever come across.

We currently have three horses on livery at LK Sport Horse, one of which we co-own with LK Sport Horse. I have been hugely impressed by Debs and Louis' attention to the needs of the horses on the yard and their owners, their unbiased advice, and dedication. The quality of both livery and lessons is extremely high and really focused on unlocking the potential of both horse and rider, and the co-owned horse is regularly competed - ridden by Louis - at some of the larger local shows.

The yard has a nice friendly group of owners as well as some non-owner students and there's usually someone to have a cup of tea with!

User

Thank you Deborah for helping me navigate the pitfalls of buying my forever horse after a 25 year break from the sport. I could have bought 10 unsuitable horses without your guidance.

I am now enjoying and training my dream horse under the care and experience that you and Louis provide at LK sport horses. Lovely place and super cool people.

User

Lovely place with excellent teaching. Horses are all well cared for, and the livery yard is as friendly as it gets. Lessons with Deborah are so helpful, within minutes she'd spotted my old injured knee, but has a clear way of teaching that makes every minute valuable.

User

Louis King is a sympathetic and talented horseman who always has his horses’ best interests at heart, both in training and in their day to day care. It is a pleasure to work with him and his mother Deborah because they are so keen to keep learning and developing, and both have a great sense of humour.

User

LK Livery put the horses interests and the horses happiness before the humans. That for me is what's missing from so many yards. If you want a happy horse with experienced professionals, you won't find a better yard. Brilliant facilities. Endless experience. Having a happy and relaxed horse means everything !

User

In April last year I luckily came across the amazing team of Deb and Louis and ever since my daughter has been having the best time of her life.

She is learning so much about caring for horses from this professional, friendly team as well as having the most incredible, attentive riding lessons from the amazing Deb. She has progressed so well, she is blossoming and her confidence all round has grown immensely. She regularly even gets homework too, no problems getting her to do this at all!!

I'm so grateful to the team and to all the livery folk too for welcoming us and making us feel part of this wonderful family x

User

I've had a few lessons now with Deborah and am definitely coming back for more. She's an excellent instructor: very friendly and puts you at ease but really knows her stuff! She has a knack of suggesting quite minor changes that produce a vast improvement. Lovely yard and top horses too.

User

I've been having lessons with debs for a couple of months now and she has made such a difference to my horse and my riding! I really look forward to my lessons as I always learn something new and come away with lots to practise and work on, would 100% recommend her to anyone :)

User

I went for a lunge lesson with Debs and can honestly say it was a breath of fresh air. Excellent instruction broken down into clear bite size pieces that actually makes sense. Debs doesn't miss a thing and explains everything step by step. The horses are lovely and you can clearly see they are very well looked after. I came away feeling motivated and really positive with plenty of things to work on, top class tuition.

I moved my young TB here about a month ago now. After loosing my confidence massively after an accident on my pony about 2 years ago, I made the decision to move Bayley to LK sports horses to try and gain my confidence back. In the short space of 4 weeks, with all of Louis' and Debra's help Bayley and I have gone from being too scared to even ride on our own in the school at home, to hacking out together by ourselves on a regular basis.

Bayley has gained so much aswell, becoming such a calm and relaxed horse, a horse I never thought he would be. Knowing Bayley is in such good hands and loving every minute of his new home has allowed me to enjoy our new adventure aswell as continuing on at university without any worries.

I couldn't be more thankful to LK sports horses for giving me this opportunity, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us both.

User

I have been working here for a few months now and I can honestly say this is my favourite job I've probably ever had. Debs has been so so kind and accommodating and genuinely wants to teach you her wisdom. If anyone gets the chance to be taught by Debs then they should think themselves very lucky! I've never met such a generous person and I'm extremely lucky to be able to work here! (Plus if you get a chance to keep your horse at the yard - jump at it)

User

I couldn't rate this yard highly enough I have been doing horses teeth for Louis and Debora for best part of 15 years now. They always put the horses needs first and anything that they need they get, making no distinction between there own or their clients horses. Great people to know and work with.

User

I can't speak highly enough of Deb and Louis. I have rediscovered the joy of riding, learning and hopefully improving! Debs is a fantastic trainer - completely in touch with both horse and rider. I just wish I'd found them sooner. I sold my horse last year but if I buy another this will be first choice for both training and livery. An enormous thank you because after a few bad experiences elsewhere, I was very close to giving up what has always been my passion, I've also had the privilege of riding the amazing Quick :-)

User

Have been taking my young horse for the last 12 months for lessons and also use of the amazing facilities.

Have had a lot of help and support over last 12 months and would thoroughly recommend lessons with Deborah - has helped me a lot.

Great hacking, indoor/ outdoor ménage, cross country jumps and show jumping facilities as well as a horse walker :)

User

Had my first lesson with Deborah last weekend and have already booked in for another one. Deborah really took into account my horse's temperament and gave me lots of constructive criticism and homework which I love! I felt the difference in my mare by the end of the lesson, with just a few subtle changes. Definitely money well spent and can't wait for my next lesson. Thank you very much!

User

Debs in particular has transformed my son and daughters riding. We came to her with a new mare (rocket shaped) and a "dirty stopper". The horses still have their quirks as do the kids but the speed in which their riding and confidence has grown has been phenomenal. Anyone with a boy will know that often they "can't be bothered to ride". With Debs we don't ever have this problem, BOTH kids are rating to go. Debs "gets them" which is priceless in an instructor and its fun - which surely is why we shovel all this SH1T!! Cannot recommend enough!!

User

Debs and Louis provide an exceptional allround service to their clients, as extremely experienced and natural horseman that are furthermore approachable, friendly and caring. They know each horse (both their own and liveries) inside out, with every one receiving the individual care plan that they need. Every aspect of horse care is considered at LKSH and I am honoured to have been the yards Equine Physiotherapist over the last few years..... Debs is excellent at picking up which and when the horses need my attention and fully takes on board any further advice I can provide. Its also refreshing to work with a yard that aren't reliant on 'gadgets'! When I find the time for a horse again myself, I know exactly where I would happily have it stabled!

User

After sending my young mare to Louis and Deborah for 3 weeks holiday livery, during her stay she was well looked after, exercised regularly and a variety which was just what she needed. Unfortunately she decided to be madam until she settled but Louis wasn't phased by her and dealt with her just the way I would. At the end of the 3 weeks we was in a much better place than when she started and they have me an honest opinion of how I should move forward with her. Thank you once again for all your time, effort and patience.

They always put the horses needs first and anything that they need they get, making no distinction between there own or their clients horses. Great people to know and work with.
