Moving in to the last quarter of our Mayoral year sees several civic and charity events which started with a tapas evening in aid of the Mayor of St. Edmundsbury’s charity. When we arrived, to my surprise, the tapas restaurant in Risbygate St which used to be a public house, was one that I visited as a child and whose landlord was my godfather. These sort of coincidences goes to proof what a small world we live in. Below are photos of some of the events that we have attended.

Community spirit is alive and well raising awareness and funds! Quiz night at the Carnegie raised nearly £700 in aid of Breckland Parkrun who are launching a junior parkrun soon. Saturday morning brought out over 300 park runners to celebrate their 6th anniversary, many of them reaching personal milestones of over 50 and 100 runs! This is just one of the towns success stories! That evening we were at a fund raiser for the Hearing Dogs, a very worthwhile charity that needs more public awareness, which raised over £400. Well done Lisa, Maxine and everyone involved.

Yet another eclectic period in the life of the Mayor of Thetford. I was honoured to be asked to open the latest viewing platform at the BTO on the Nunnery Estate, to present an award at the Tara’s, to be invited to a performance of the History Boys at West Suffolk College where, later in the week, we also attended the launch of the Big Bang Fair and to the Civic procession which opens the historic Kings Lynn Mart.

HAPPY 2019! Obviously 2018 was a fabulous year for us which was rounded off with heart warming visits to the homes for the elderly around the town and then on to a Christmas lunch for the less fortunate organised by Sharon and her gang of volunteers on Christmas Day,and what a day! We will never forget the smiles, goodwill and especially the gentleman who, at the grand age of 100 years of age, still does yoga every day and almost jumped out of his chair to demonstrate to us h...ow he can still touch his toes! Remarkable! We thank our lovely family for swapping their Christmas Day to Boxing Day for our families festive celebrations! The new year began with Thetford hosting The Norfolk County Cross Country Championships and the medal ceremony for the dedicated winners of all ages. On Sunday we were proud to represent Thetford again at the Mayor of Ipswich Civic Service. On a sad note we were devastated at the loss of my ward colleague and Town councillor, John Newton. He will be greatly missed by the town that he worked so tirelessly for!

We would like to thank and wish a very merry Christmas to all of the people who are making a difference to the lives of people in our community. Thank you Andrew, manager of Tesco, for helping to make it possible for the night shelter and meet and eat to support the homeless and the lonely in our community. Thanks also to all organisations and businesses that have put on various events that have made Thetford a wonderful place to live in this Christmas. Karen and I would like to wish all of you that follow our ramblings on this page a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! Have a good one, see you all in the new year.x

JOY AND CELEBRATION...... two words that crop up a lot at the moment and describes perfectly what we have experienced over this period, especially at the Cloverfields Candle Lit Service and the Methodist Christmas lunch where we were welcomed into the fold.

We were privileged to switch on the lights at the 20th year of the Christmas tree festival at Thetford Methodist Church with the help of Dad’s Army Captain Mainwaring and Sgt. Wilson. If you would like to brighten up your day why not pop in to see the magnificent display of over SIXTY beautifully decorated Christmas trees by many local schools, organisations, businesses and individuals. You’ll be in for a real treat!!
