About Nene Valley Railway. Home Of Thomas

A steam Heritage railway running 7. 5 miles between Peterborough and Wansford station (Located only 0. 5 miles from the A1 between Stamford and Peterborough)

Nene Valley Railway. Home Of Thomas Description

Nene Valley Railway is a heritage railway that offers a family day out, based near Peterborough close to the boundaries of Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire. The railway's proximity to the A1 and A47 means it is within easy reach of the Midlands and beyond.

We run a regular steam train service but the railway enthusiast with a penchant for Diesel is not forgotten either.

but is no mere manufactured visitor attraction as the preserved railway uses part of the original London and North Western line from Northamptonshire into the Cathedral city of Peterborough, encompassing the stations of Yarwell, Wansford, Ferry Meadows (Nene Park) and Orton Mere

We went on the Santa express on Sunday and it really was lovely. We have always loved coming here but this is the first time seeing Thomas in steam & the twins got to go on Thomas & blow his whistle so they were thrilled! All the staff were really friendly & helpful, Santa & the entertainment were brilliant just fantastic all round. We will be back next year & will be recommending to everyone!

User

We have great time at the Santa Special, me and my children love it and come every year. Staff great, food lovely and whole experience makes you feel very festive. Will be booking again in June

User

Thoroughly enjoyed a cream tea at the Overton Station on Sunday

User

This is my son’s favourite place - we love sitting on the platform at Orton mere most weekends watching the steam come in, looking around the Wansford station and looking at Thomas in the engine Shed from the viewing area , a lovely place to visit for a train mad 3 year old !

User

Outstanding as always! Been going on the Santa Express for a few years now and the family love it! Our little ones get so excited! My only tiny nag (obviously not a big enough concern to lower the rating) is that a clown 🤡 comes into our compartment to try and “entertain” the kids and the adults without success. He’s not very good and is really unessessary as we are there for the SANTA experience, not a bad clown! And we find this to be the case every year. It doesn’t ruin the experience at all but If it’s to promote business, it does not work for us and for a few minutes it removes you from the magic and my two girls are not the biggest fans of clowns either. It won’t stop us from going though!

User

Not one complaint, just wish there was more models otherwise brilliant time had by all three of us

Last weekend my parents travelled over from their home in Birmingham to treat us all to a trip on the Santa Special. We had a truly wonderful memorable experience and thank you all at Nene Valley Railway for the hard work it was perfect. Everything was so well organised that the whole thing ran smoothly and we all agree it's the best Santa/Christmas thing we have ever done. We didn't have any of the big queues you often face and we even had an allocated coach so didn't have to worry about sitting together. I could rave all day about our wonderful time. The children loved it, you were all so friendly and from the minute we arrived at the station we felt very Christmassy. Superb.

User

Had a fabulous time on the Santa Special today. Our little boy (nearly 3) was overjoyed to meet the friendly and approachable Santa and especially loved the little 1:1 time on the train. He was also delighted with his lovely gift and watched Santa's Train Set for ages. As adults we thought our food platter was delicious, liked all the little touches like the crackers and the chocolate for the children and found all the staff to be very helpful. We hope to return next year!

User

Great time on the railway today despite the rain. The volunteers are all so friendly and great with the kids. Even got to see Thomas in full steam. My son was very excited being able to ride up to Yarwell Junction behind him. Thank you Nene Valley Railway.

User

Great day out with grandchildren great value

User

Came every year for Santa Special since I was 2 years old, now bring my own family to continue the tradition. Love this place!

User

Absolutely fantastic day on the Paddington Express , the staff were amazing and very friendly. Especially Paul on the platform with all the games , . Would recommend to anyone. Thankyou NVR

User

We only stopped to get a snack and drink at the cafe and take our dog for a quick walk. The cafe allows dogs in the conservatory which is handy. The food is tasty and good value, certainly much better than a service station. I'd recommend taking a break from a journey here, you can take a look at the station and river while stretching your legs.

User

Really nice gentlemen working there (even though it was a bit grumpy not to allow my child on Thomas, after being motioned to come on and after waiting in line) and lovely ladies in the gift shop, however, I hope the woman that was in a carriage on her own sees this to shame her..... the woman who when I asked if my toddler and I could join her said 'I'd rather you didn't.... if you must'. Told her we wouldn't stay where we weren't wanted and moved to the next carriage, to a lady and gentleman with their grandchild, who were lovely and shocked at the response we had. Should still be on the train now, but the grumpy woman took the shine off the experience.

User

A well run clean and tidy and well presented in all aspects.

We went to the Nene valley railway today, travelled up the line to Peterborough then back down to stop off at Overton Station where we were going to have some refreshments and explore the attractions advertised at the location then go for a walk. The station was unmanned so everything was closed up including the toilets since only one train was running this would have meant a considerable wait. We decided to walk back to Orton Mere, this station was supposed to offer a variety of cold snacks and drinks. The only 'snacks' available were crisps or chocolate. The people working there told us how we could find a local pub so we could get something to eat which is what we did, we then took a walk by the river and returned to Overton station. We felt really let down, we should have been told when we booked our tickets that Overton station's attractions and refreshments would be closed. Poor service. The train ride was fine and the cafe was ok at Wansford but when you're having a day out you'd like to be fully informed about the lack of facilities at the other stations so you don't waste your time stopping there.

User

It was a real shame. We had tickets booked for this morning to take the Thomas train, and he was broken, so no train ride at all. We had a sad little boy to take home! I understand things happen and faults occur but it's a shame that no one apologised, there was no back up plan, no refund offered and we were kept waiting from 10:30 until 12:30, being told it'll be half an hour, when we finally gave up and left for some lunch. I know faults happen but I think it's the way it's managed that matters.

I work as a nursery practitioner and throughout the summer, we take children on trips to different places, today we visited nene valley railway and were really disappointed, our children were so excited to see Thomas, but Thomas was hidden in the garage behind another train, so our children couldn't see him, the sadness on their faces, the place was empty and the closest the children got to see of Thomas was the wooden one in the play area, very disappointed and will not be returning!!!

User

We went for the Thomas weekend 8th July i am not sure what I expected exactly but was very disappointed. The station is nice but as being 'the home of Thomas' I thought we would see some of the other characters. The Thomas face isn't accurately painted and as he's the main attraction that kind of detail makes a difference for children. The play park is really basic and doesn't actually have much at all and that's about it as far as entertainment went. They had a bouncy castle which was advertised on the website as free although there was a bucket by the side for donations for playing on it. I found this a little cheeky considering the price charged for the all day ticket. The ride on Thomas is no more than 5 minutes up the line to Yarwell where there is nothing. You get off for 10 mins or so to watch Thomas be connected to the train to pull us back. Then another 5 minutes back down the line to Wansford. There's real opportunity to create something magical for children but at the moment it's overpriced, boring and disappointing.
