Oneida Benevolent & Choir Society Description

The Oneida Benevolent & Choir Society was established in the 1930s. The precise date is not exactly known it is estimated to have been 1938.

The society initially started out as a choir which was comprised of individuals from the Oneida community. They used to hold what were called Tea Meetings. Members would bring food and then pay a small amount to eat.

One of the first treasurers was an individual named Charlie Summers. When a death occurred in the membership twenty-five cents was collected from each member and given to the bereaved family. It may not seem like a large amount by today’s standards but it was a comfort to the family.

Since those early beginnings the society has continued to grow and develop. A Constitution was written and continues to be the guiding document governing the affairs of the society. As the years have gone by changes and additions have been made to the constitution but the most central purpose of the society remained intact.

Bereavement benefits continue to be provided to the families of members who pass on.
