Offshore service vessel Seazip 3 has performed the first-ever autonomous maneuvering trials in the Dutch North Sea as part of the Autonomous Shipping joint industry project. The fast crew supply (FCS) vessel was outfitted with collision avoidance technology and took part in 11 nautical scenarios on 19 and 20 March offshore Den Helder to determine how it would interact with seagoing traffic. East Anglia is at the centre of the offshore wind energy boom with a number of wind farms established off its coast and more in the pipeline. James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) has secured a contract to carry out unexploded ordnance (UXO) removal and boulder clearance at the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm. JFMS is in charge of investigating and clearing locations at the 145km2 offshore site where earlier surveys have identified potential obstructions to construction. The works, set to begin in spring, will utilize several vessels and crews together with a number of east coast ports including Grimsby likely to be involved. The next generation of engineers and scientists have been inspired by the wonder of wind power and engineering in a series of hands-on workshops organised by ScottishPower Renewables and Cambridge Science Centre.
