#hiddenhistories These are photographs of the public gallery where the townsfolk of Otley and the surrounding area could witness the proceedings of the court. The Courthouse enables a connection to the past and the ability to be in a space that has seen such a tremendous variety of history helps to link our present to the past in a special way. Imagine for instance sitting in the public gallery and witnessing a loved one, friend or neighbour taking part in a trial as either ...the defendant or perhaps a victim. The gallery is also located directly above where the defendants would be held before the trial, which would have heightened the emotion if you were connected to the defendant.
For more information on the history behind the Courthouse building a leaflet entitled ‘Otley Courthouse Heritage Guide’ is available to purchase for 20p from the Reception desk at the Courthouse. We are also in the process of creating a number of leaflets that detail cases that took place at the Courthouse in honour of the 15th Anniversary of the reopening of the Courthouse as an Arts Centre.
