HELP - THE GREAT WAR, SECOND WORLD WAR & TOPSY HOLDEN
Following the recent commemorations to mark the One Hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War this has focused minds on events and also on the Second World War which will soon become a more distant memory; one which we would like to record for history and posterity before it’s too late.
We would like more information on those that served and died in the First World War and sadly do not have any photographs ...of Ernest Ruffles, William Baldry, Walter Elmer, Edward Harrison, John Elmer, William Goode, William Pearson, Percy Keeble, Harold Kemp and Herbert Harrison whom we would like to remember.
With regards to the Second World War we would like to know more about those that served particularly Tom Bevan, Herbert Coleman, J Brown, Reginald Frances, John & Ron Golding, Ben Green, John Clarke and Reginald Jolly; their lives and service. We have no details at all of J Brown or even a photo nor of John Clarke. Are there others that should be remembered?

We need recollections of what happened and what went on in Haughley in the Second World War, for instance who was stationed here, what precautions were taken e.g. ARP, Home Guard, Evacuees as well as what events took place, prisoners of war, bombings and so on. Photos would be particularly helpful which can be copied and anything would be gratefully appreciated.
Finally, next year marks the 150th Anniversary of Palmers Bakery and whilst our records are extensive we have one gap.... we are also looking for information about a girl called "Topsy Holden" who was born about 1918 and went to Haughley School and particularly of her Grandmother who cared for her and worked in Palmers Bakery in the 1920/30s. They were both of either West Indian or African origin and were welcomed into the village but we would like to know more.
Please either speak to me in person, call at the Bakery or Office, email me on vandenlecroix@hotmail.com or call me on 01449 673286
Many thanks
Kieron Palmer

“The Glorious Dead” 1918-2018
Haughley today commemorated the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Armistice... following a parade to Haughley Church together with the Standards and a Service of Remembrance; with the Royal British Legion, the Scouts, the Parish Council and other local organisations, Palmers (Haughley) Limited laid a wreath of poppies at the foot of Haughley War Memorial to the fallen. The wreath within the church was laid at the altar of the church by Kenneth & K...ieron Palmer, father and son together in the One Hundredth year of the Armistice and in the One Hundred and Fiftieth year of Palmers (Haughley) Ltd.
Following the Two Minutes Silence and the Last Post, the names of the fallen were read and the epitaph recited by Mr Buttle. After the choir had sang an anthem and the National Anthem was sung, the Standards were borne from the church. The service of over three hundred people was taken by the Rev Bryn Singleton.
