Surgeons from RVC Small Animal Referrals have successfully carried out the surgical repair of a complex combination of heart defects in a puppy called Lottie. The abnormalities required tricuspid valve repair surgery along with the repair for the common atrium. It is the first time these procedures have been carried out on a dog in the same operation.

Everyone loves a 'feel good Friday' story - so we thought we'd share Alfie's story. His owner, Jackie, explains: "My Weimaraner, Alfie took a bad fall whilst out running. Within 24 hours, he was completely paralysed. He was referred by my vet to the RVC. My baby is slowly starting to get movement back. I can’t thank them (RVC team) all enough, I am forever grateful for everything you have done for him and all the love and hugs you have given him". As you can see from the vid...eo, Alfie's recovery is going well. Alex Forward (RVC Neurology and Neurosurgery team) commented: "Alfie had a slipped disc in his neck. When he came to us, he was tetraplegic (ie: no voluntary movement in any of his legs). We performed surgery to decompress his spinal cord. A very important factor in Alfie's recovery is the supportive care he received following his surgery. The provision of that rehabilitation was all down to the amazing teamwork from the RVC neurology nurses, physiotherapists and the hydrotherapy staff."

We brought our Staffordshire Bull Terrier Maisie in a few weeks back as an emergency. We all received such kindness from your staff and Maisie was very well treated during her overnight stay with you (Although we missed her terribly) She's doing really well the Ephipen you put her on seems to be doing the trick. We took her back to her regular vet this week for a check up and another blood test and he seems really pleased with her progress he checked her all over and said the Ephipen seems to be working ok. He said maybe on her next check up if all stays as it is he may consider lowering her dosage. Thank you to all your lovely staff who showed her such kindness x

Our puppy Tom was recently referred there from our vets after they suspected that he may have a blood clotting disorder. When he got there he had no energy and was really ill. The vets here were absolutely fantastic with him. Tom (the vet) and another vet (forgotten her name) looked after our little Tom and we soon had our very excitable puppy back. Even after his discharge they were happy to answer any queries we had. I can not fault them as they gave us our special boy back. Thank you so much.

Our precious 4 yr old English Bullterrier recently spend a week in here after being diagnosed with Aspergillosis.

She had quite an invasive procedure of frontal sinus trephination and a blood transfusion following a severe nose bleed.

We were really anxious as Daisy had been so unwell on admission.

Every member of staff encountered from reception, admin, trainee vets doctors and surgeons gave us peace of mind & assurance that duty of care was top priority.

I’m really pleased to say after a follow up appointment Daisy has been discharged with a clean bill of health. And if we have any concerns in the future to give them a call.

I would (and have) recommend the RVC hospital Hatfield to any concerned pet owner.

Thank you to Dr Jack Lawson and all the staff involved in Daisy’s welfare, you’ve given us our happy playful dog again!

Our beloved cat Womble went to sleep at 7.15 am yesterday. We are beyond devastated. My ex-wife called me on Tuesday evening as Wombles breathing became really laboured due to his feline asthma. We got an appointment at our vets on Wednesday morning and he seemed fine but on arrival it as apparent that he was struggling and the vet had to drain fluid from his chest which was putting pressure on his lung. The vet was on it immediately. We received a call that afternoon to say we needed to take him to the RVC Hospital for scan and more tests. Unfortunatley our vet sent us to the wrong location so after 4.5 hours in a car fighting central London rush hour traffic, we arrived at the hospital. From the time my son and I arrived at QMH they were brilliant and we had all options explained to us. We said goodbye to our Womble full of hope but yesterday at 7.15 they called us to tell us he had relapsed. I had no time to call my ex-wife so took the decision to end our little persons life. It was his 12th birthday. We arranged to see him and Poppy the vet greeted us and was lovely. We said our goodbyes and look forward to having his ashes returned to us. It's really helped to write this.

Thank you for taking amazing care of my previous boy

I left reassured that my Pippin would be back to her crazy self in a few days! 🐶💗☺️ Xx

I really can’t be more grateful to the staff here who helped my rabbit Fluffy last night!

We think Fluffy ate around 4 inches of a thin bungee cord and the staff here helped to make sure that he’s ok. Thankfully Fluffy is home and doing really well, we’re just watching his poops to make sure that the bits of bungee cord come out safely.

The staff really helped me feel better as well, I have three anxiety disorders and their calm reassurance really helped.

My lovely Biene had difficulty delivering a dead puppy and had to have an emergency Caesarian late last night. Delighted to say she came home this morning with the rest of her new family, all safely delivered alive by the wonderful team at Queen Mother and now settled. Thanks guys

My jackapoo called jack ate some raisins last night. I called the vet who couldn’t see him as they were inundated with emergencies. They told me to go straight to the rvc. They saw him straight away and started treatment. They kept me informed the whole time and everyone I spoke to was brilliant. He is now back at my vets under observation for the next 48 hours. Thank you for taking amazing care of my previous boy

My Weimaraner Alfie took a bad fall whilst out running, within 24 hours he was completely paralysed, he was referred to the RVCH where he is under the care of Alex and his team in the neurological department. After surgery, daily physio and hydrotherapy my baby is slowly starting to get movement back, he is coming home to me on Friday (I am so excited) after what would be 4 weeks away from me, so I can carry on his rehabilitation. I can’t thank them all enough, I am forever grateful for everything you have done for him and all the love and hugs you have given him, and when he is better and walking around unaided, I will bring him up so they can see what a character of a dog they have saved. Xxx

I took my little Pippin in at 10:00pm on 30/05/18 with laboured breathing as she was being constantly sick. Had been for 2 days straight. The staff took her in immediately and calmed her down, gave her the necessary treatment & attention she needed. The staff were welcoming, reassuring & very thorough!

Couldn’t have asked for a better team of people to care for my little Wynter who hurt her back, even though she has only been there 1 night they were awesome! They were amazing and put me right at ease when I was a bag of nerves! Thank you so much!!!
