Found a workaround for this 'minimum wage' nonsense... at #RumBridgeFisheries

Delighted to see the crucians are still in residence at #RumBridgeFisheries. Look forward to stocking more of the same in the autumn.

Electro-fishing underway at Rum Bridge Fisheries...

Today, I shall be mostly... editing a prospectus for a Facilities Management company. Tomorrow: completing the firm's quarterly accounts. On Saturday: Updating our eBay store. And on Sunday: helping to build a bridge, on our new fishery. Maybe Charles Handy had a point... #PortfolioWorking

Straw poll time. We’ve had requests from – literally, some – holiday carpers, seeking a superior level of comfort: some form of bankside accommodation, for them and / or their partners. And that got us to thinking. Is there, we wondered, a case for providing ‘pods’ (think: insulated wooden sheds) on the Back (big carp) Lake – combining convenient fishing from wooden decking with total protection from the elements? Would this enhance the long stay carping experience? Or is it ...an indulgence too far? Perhaps we should simply provide top-end two/three man bivvies – with or without bedchairs – allowing visiting anglers to slim-down their kit; to drop into their choice of swim, their houses already in situ. Be good to get your views. Meantime, whatever we decide, I can confirm that anglers will, regardless, be able to leave the kitchen sink at home; as we plan to provide a field kitchen with hot and cold running water. Oh, and there’ll be hot showers too – so you can even dress for dinner. (Well this is Suffolk, after all.)

Potamogeton: great for water quality; not so great for anglers...

Arrived onsite this morning to discover someone had helped themselves to £1,000-worth of close panel fencing. More in hope than expectation called the Police - spending a little under an hour in a hold-queue before finally... being cut off. Hey ho. On an unrelated note, I see the fair is back in town... #WelcomeToClare

Thanks to Sean Mcstravick for turning round our otter fence in record time. A day or so's snagging and we're good to go.

How hard can it be? Carol takes charge of the digger. Steve watches on. From the far side of the fishery.

A couple of Burwell’s finest, which I managed to winkle out at the weekend with a view to relocating same to Rum Bridge. Then; another bombshell (you get immune to them after a while): in order to legally move any of our fish to Suffolk, they’ll have to be health-checked. Which means knocking a few of these fellows on the head. Could you do it? Nope? Well, given that many of our fish are in excess of 40 years old (and the smallest run to mid-doubles)… nor could I. Which means... a further investment in carp and tench for the new ponds. The reason: Rum Bridge is an inline stillwater, which flows out into a stream and thence to The Stour. So unless we can do some sort of deal with another owner - of a landlocked lake, and/or health-checked fish – it’s out with the cheque book once again. Hey ho…. As me old Mum was fond of saying, it’s better to be born lucky than rich. (And she would know – she lived through the Blitz.)

A couple of folk (well, two) have raised an eyebrow at our proposed weekend prices.
One particular chap even suggested that the higher rates, for Fridays and Saturdays, were – and I quote - ‘a ploy to make money’.
Well, du-uh!
... This is, contrary to popular belief, a business.
Nonetheless, we believe that our rates are competitive, including as they do:
• The chance to angle for pristine, specimen carp from VS Fisheries, Front Fish and others – ALL over 20lbs, many over 30lbs • An idyllic, *secure* setting, with access to toilets and showers - plus bait, terminal tackle, hot and cold drinks and snacks • Maximum of three other anglers • Complimentary breakfast baguettes • FREE takeaway delivery service
Of course, anyone who feels that £35 for 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays is a little ‘grown up’ is welcome to join us on weekdays – when they can fish for three days for just £40.
Oh, and for the record, this too is ‘a ploy to make money’ – enabling us to fill spots at times of low demand.
Just like a proper business, really.
