Sacrewell

About Sacrewell

Heritage, history, rare breeds, camping, playbarn, tractor rides, good food or just a breath of fresh air.

Sacrewell Description

You probably know us as a lovely place for children to see the animals, run around in beautiful countryside and let off steam in our state-of-the-art playbarn – but there’s a lot more to Sacrewell.
With the help of £1. 4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, our 18th century water mill is being transformed into a national centre for milling excellence – take a tour and find out how your great-grandparents got their daily bread. Foodies can also join a tractor trip around the fields of our tenant farmers Riverford Organic Farms (it’s on our land).
Then there’s our wildlife trail, scavenger hunt and two rambles – if you’re lucky, you’ll see the rare red kites and brown hares. Seasonal events range from our Lamb National to a vintage steam rally.
In our 50th year as a charity dedicated to agricultural education, we continue to welcome students of all ages who want to learn traditional skills and get an insight into rural life. We hope that all our visitors not only have a great day out but feel they’ve learned something too.

Yesterday I visited with family, along with a 3 year old on his birthday. Driving up to the car park we passed ponies & a donkey. Had a lovely lunch first in the cafe, and then wandered outside not sure what to expect but within seconds our grandson was absolutely loving everything on offer, from seeing little lambs; gorgeous peacocks; goats, piglets with their mum, swans on a lovely lake along with ducks and all in a beautiful setting with Spring flowers out too. This was all in between clambering up slides; running in and out of tunnels of tyres and ‘driving’ a tractor. Playing Poo Sticks on a bridge added to his fun. But for the adults we were absolutely impressed with the wonders of the gorgeous water mill which had so many outstanding displays explaining every process involved from the crop to the loaf! Our grandson loved to press the button & hear Jack the rat catcher tell how he did his job! After all the fun of the outdoor activities we finished in the amazing Play Barn where the younger ones in the party had much fun together - a great afternoon it had been & well worth our long drive to get there!

User

We have just had a fantastic day at the farm today. So many enjoyable activities and old fashioned fun which my 3 boys loved. Throwing pooh stick, den building and completing the obstacle course were definite favourites! The tractor ride is also enjoyable. The indoor play area is great to get in from the sun for a while, although it was a bit warm in there! We were there 11 till 5 and could have stayed longer. Thank you for a great day. We will definitely be returning soon!

User

We have been here camping twice in the last year. Its brilliant the children love every part of sacrewell from the animal handling, tractor ride, soft play and the water mill. The volunteers helping in the small animals were particularly helpful and informative. The campsite is also great. Would highly recommend.

We attended the lambing experience Sunday evening and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Jess is amazing and so experienced, such a fountain of knowledge. She has total dedication to her job and the welfare of those animals is her top priority. She works so very hard...how she fits in sleeping, I will never know. We unfortunately didn’t get to see any lambs arrive but had loads of cuddles and absolutely loved feeding the lambs their milk. I am so pleased we were able to get up close to the animals in our small group of 6 after the park had closed. Thanks so much Jess.

Just spent the weekend camping with my 1 year old. Loved every minute of it, lovely and clean, lots of animals and the play barn was excellent for getting out of the sun! Can’t wait to come back again

I went yesterday with my sister and my niece, it was the first time for them both and they loved it, it was very busy as it was the Easter egg hunt. We saw a lamb that was 3mins old and watched how the lady tendered over the lamb, and she still answered question that she was being asked while watching over the lamb. I think people need to remember it is a working farm and we are very lucky to be able to visit and experience these things. I think you all do an amazing job well done xx

User

I booked my 2 daughters onto the Lambing Experience morning earlier this week and have to say it was just great.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the 3.5 hour session. At the time of booking it did feel quite expensive, but having been on it now feel it was worth every penny. Especially if you have a child(ren) that are interested in animals and like being hands on.

Jess the Livestock Manager shared so much of her own knowledge and knowhow of the animals and allowed everyone in the small group to get involved. She is clearly very passionate about the sheep and the farm, she was great with the children in the group. Patiently answering every question they threw her way!

We all learnt a lot - for example, did you know the lambs have their tails docked so that come the summer it stops the flies being able to lay eggs in that area which is often quite poohie, the fly eggs hatching and maggots infesting the sheep?

There were a few eye watering moments amongst the Dads in the group as we watched a lamb being castrated. The highlight for the kids certainly was bottle feeding the orphan lambs and sitting in the pens with the younger lambs and their mums.

Was there anything that could be improved; perhaps only the co-ordination if the coffee break. It would have been better if tea-break requests were taken on arrival with a couple of jugs of squash being available to the group from the start of the day.

All in all a great hands on morning, we are looking forward to more things like this. Thanks Jess!

Hello all,I am a childminder and decided to pay the farm a visit. At first I thought £10 each was expensive but once arrived and seen what there was to do that all changed. I enjoyed it and all the children did too,so much to do and at times the children made the most of the open space by playing games and hide and seek. Next time I come I want to camp and make the most of it so hopefully will be visiting again soon. Thanks Kirsti and Kirstis Kids

User

Had a wonderful evening experience lambing. There was only 6 volunteers on the visit so we all got a good amount of time with the animals. We met some kids and lambs. We bottle fed little ones. Then got to number with spray the mother and lamb. Really enjoyed the time

Our guide pitched it right for the group and was open to lots of questions. Well done .

Came today with my little boy and husband. We had a great day!! The animals are clearly well looked after, nice big enclosures!! My little one loved getting so close to all the animals!

The soft play area was great, clean and lots for him to get stuck into (he only 1) .

We will definitely be back

User

Booked on to the lambing experiance. Really good morning. First hand helping out with everything, even spray painting numbers on the lambs ..Jess was amazing! Really good with the children . Spent lots of time encouraging them to touch, feed & get stuck in ! & explained everything really well. Great day out at sacrewell as always !

User

Came here at the weekend with my 6 year old granddaughter

She had a great time but I think entry cost is a bit expensive for what you get. £20 for one adult and one 6 year old plus a ride on a tractor. Let’s be honest most adults are only there for the kids.

User

We’ve been to Sacrewell many times, including camping and have always had a lovely time, however yesterday’s visit was not quite up to the standard we’ve come to expect.

Very few staff around, previously we’ve been impressed by how many staff are out and about doing activities and talks about various different things but yesterday I did not see a single person.

The craft areas in the house had run out of materials, I do appreciate it’s half term and therefore busy but all the more reason to ensure it is stocked and manned. No one any closer than reception to ask so we didn’t get to do this much to our daughters disappointment.

Tractor ride not running, despite being advertised in reception; den building area closed for work; no animal food available in dispenser; reptiles etc not in the small pet corner.

The grounds are beautiful and we loved our walk around the pond. Equally the soft play is always a hit with out little girl, I did however feel very sorry for the young man on his own manning a barn full of energetic children at half term!

We had lunch at the cafe, whilst the food was ok, the staff left little to be desired and despite the fact that I saw at least four members of staff and it was not busy there were areas that were not clean.

As I’ve said previously we’ve always enjoyed our visit but yesterday has left a bad taste. Work has to be done and things needs to be repaired etc but I’m not sure that half term is the most appropriate time to do this. If no choice was given regarding this then I feel a reduced priced should have been offered; otherwise I’ll be honest it feels as though you’ve cashed in on half term with very little thought to your regular visitors.

I can only hope this was a horrible one off as it would be such a shame to lose one of the best attractions in the local area.

User

We went to the cafe for lunch and found all the cakes on a table in front of the counters open to the elements. I queried the hygiene of it and the manageress said that they were told by health & safety that they just needed to cover the large sponge cakes! Personally, i didn’t fancy a cream tea not knowing if someone had sneezed or coughed over the scones!! Or how many people had touched them after stroking the animals.

User

I have always loved Sacrewell Farm and have visited here many many times with my children over the last 10 years. I came yesterday..Mothers day. I can not believe how disappointing it was. We didn't see any animals at all apart from a horse from a distance and a goat. All the paddocks were empty or gone. Half of the outdoor park has been removed and there were no staff outside at all.

It left us with little to do and look at.

We resorted to the indoor play earlier than I would have liked but with no choice and a large section of that was closed off too.

I used to come to Sacrewell Farm and happily spend the whole day. We left after 2 hours...most if this time was spent in the soft play unfortunately.

I hate to write a bad review as I have always truly loved this place. Hopefully things will improve.

User

Bit disappointed with the place. The play barn was good for the kids but the rest of the farm wasn’t that good. Hardly any animals apart from sheep and goats. There were a couple of Shetland ponies too. None of the activities were advertised (I only found out about them afterwards on the FB page, even though I had emailed prior to our visit to see if there were any activities on) so we didn’t get to do any of them.

Not much of a play area outside for the smaller children. The tractor ride could have been more informative and could have gone round where the animals were rather than through a few fields.

There was a dead lamb in the field and the staff didn’t seem to know how many lambs there should have been in that small paddock so didn’t know about it. If it wasn’t for my dad pointing it out they wouldn’t have found the poor thing. It was taken away and the situation dealt with quickly once found though.

Don’t think we will be going back.

User

Very disappointed used to take my children when they were small and it was a lovely place to visit took my grandchild this weekend and there were very few animals for her to interact with and the place looked old and dated

User

I’ve noticed that the outdoor play area has less and less for the kids to play on. The animals appear fine but there isn’t as many animals as in the past. The scenery is beautiful and it’s a great place for a good wander around. I have to be honest and say I only noticed one member of staff around and that was later in the day. Also it’s a pity that the cafe in the play barn was shut again. Apart from that we had a lovely time.

User

Disappointed to say the least. Not very many animals around the farm at all, so not much for the children to look at. The tractor ride is non refundable even if this isn’t working, which it wasn’t when I went, so I lost my money for 4 people. For the price they charge to get in it was disappointing. I hope in the summer they have more things to do to justify the price.

She had a great time but I think entry cost is a bit expensive for what you get. £20 for one adult and one 6 year old plus a ride on a tractor. Let’s be honest most adults are only there for the kids.

User

Well done .
