I'm pleased to announce that I will be back in the practice next week after a 9 month absence. My first extended break in 34 years! Looking forward to stepping back into the wonderful journey that Acupuncture is, a true healing art for all those involved. I hear so many stories in my work, of peoples lives and the paths that they've taken to get to the point of actually having treatment. I think the skill of the practitioner is in understanding the reasons behind and finding... the cause for the symptoms presented. This is often like detective work and in being able to find the place and time where the energy of the the person has undergone a blockage or trauma that stops or restricts the persons full potential, whether that is physical or upon any other level. Then once a true diagnosis is reached, being able to release that restriction so that the full strength and potential of the person being treated comes back online and therefore they can live their life as fully as possible again

So the Seasons turn again, Autumn coming slowly at first and then descending rapidly into Winter. In Five Element Acupuncture terms the Metal element which has been in a state of hieghtened functioning lets the Water element come into ascendency. The Lung and Large Intestine meridians first receive and then let go of the dross of the year gone by so that we can store what is useful and let go of the past. The emotion associated with Metal is grief , an integral part of our nature without which we could never live fully. If we don't grief and let go of old tears and pain there would be no renewal and no rebirth. Coming gently into Winter things become emphasised in there simplicity and purity and become still. This stillness is where are essential reserves start to build again for the coming year

I was thinking about acupuncture recently and it's intention, which I feel is to align someone with the essence of who they are. Their original blueprint so to speak. It seems to be that when we wander from the our true path or detach ourselves from our inner truth we become imbalanced and therefore [ill] or ill at ease with our selves and out of harmony with the world around. This path in the classics was called theTao. When I treat I see what the patient presents me with and... then look closely at what lies behind the symptomatology that they arrive with. Often times as I have posted in the past, I perceive that there has been some kind of catastrophic shock that then takes them out of alignment with themselves and this then leads to a series of events that then brings about the reason for the patients distress. So after the initial treatment to take them out of shock there begins a process of unravelling their condition, step by step. Once the trauma of the, lets say accident, has been released, the pulse of the person coming for acupuncture reveals a truer picture of exactly where things started to deviate, or their energy became unsynchronised with their true nature. It is then the work of the practitioner to gradually bring them back into balance with themselves as well as alleviating any suffering or pain that they may be experiencing.

I recently studied the Chinese medical classics at an acupuncture conference and am still amazed at the depth and accuracy of thier knowledge and how it is still totally applicable now. I also realised that the practical work that I have been doing with Native American teachers and in Chinese medicine over the last 30 years comes from exactly the same root.

The thing I come across again and again that is at the root of illness and disease is shock. An event wether physical or emotional happens, emotionally for instance a bereavement, or an accident of some kind, which is to much for our system as a whole to cope with, so things shut down. When things shut down our full health is compromised and patterns of illness creep in. By treating people with acupuncture you can remove the stasis that shock causes, often with amazing results in a very short time, therefore allowing the body mind to regain it's balance and begin the process of true healing.

Constanly amazed by the insant results you get from a few needles in the right place. In Acupuncture diagnosis is everything. Had many different conditions through the door today. Athritus, Poly Myalgia Rhuematica, Migraines. Bladder problems. Oedema and Asthma. The challenge is to find and treat the cause and not just the symptom

Some people need mainstream science to validate complementary therapies. So here's one: "Acupuncture is an invasive procedure commonly used to relieve pain. Acupuncture is practiced worldwide, despite difficulties in reconciling its principles with evidence-based medicine. We found that adenosine, a neuromodulator... was released during acupuncture in mice...Direct injection of an adenosine receptor agonist replicated the analgesic effect of acupuncture. Inhibition of enzymes... potentiated the acupuncture-elicited increase in adenosine, as well as its anti-nociceptive effect. These observations indicate that adenosine mediates the effects of acupuncture and that interfering with adenosine metabolism may prolong the clinical benefit of acupuncture" Nature Neuroscience 13, Published 30 May 2010

Did you know that Osteopaths are required to update their training throughout their working lives. They must complete at least 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development per year.
