After spending over 40 years in the advertising industry, one of the great pleasures in attempting to carve out a new-found career in music tourism and events is chatting to the songwriters and performers who made a name for themselves over 50 years ago - many of whom are still writing and performing to this day. One such singer/songwriter, now collaborating with Brazilian musician/producer, Salomao Hamzem is the voice of the Flower Pot Men and Ivy League member, John Carter ...who spared me some time on the phone earlier this afternoon. Whilst the name may not be on the tip of every pop-pickers' tongue, the bands he sang with and hits he wrote will be known to all those who owned a Ben Sherman button-down or Mary Quant mini. His megaphone enhanced vocal delivery on Winchester Cathedral, the mellow harmonies on Let's Go To San Francisco, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat and backing vocals on The Who's mega-hit "I Can't Explain". He also wrote hits for Peter and Gordon, Brenda Lee and the Mary Hopkin Eurovision runner-up "Knock, Knock Who's There" in 1970. Can't wait to share more stories with John over a coffee in Richmond Park soon and arranging a date for him to travel back in time with us on the Swinging 60s Bus Tours...
