About The Bell Inn, St Olaves

Beautiful Gardens, Delicious food and Great Beer

The Bell Inn, St Olaves Description

Built around 1520, parts of the original building is still in use today. It was here that the ferryman had his bell, which was rung to alert him to customers wishing to cross the river. With the erection of the Hobart Bridge, business at the Bell became brisk with the present building showing ample evidence of a substantial 14th century development which indicated increased prosperity! The present Bell Inn has many modern attributes with its bars, 40 plus seat restaurant, gardens and its own moorings on the river Waveney. The Bell provides an ideal location for that special meal in the comfortable restaurant or if you prefer meals can be taken al fresco style during the summer months on the large patio overlooking the river Waveney. Menus are varied, changed regularly and all tastes are catered for including vegetarians. Whatever your requirements the helpful staff will endeavour to make your visit a memorable one.

Plated Sunday roast available today, a choice between lamb, beef or pork all being served with fresh veggies, roast potatoes and of course a Yorkshire pudding with gravy. If that isn’t enough to tickle your taste buds, how about some indulgent desserts like our Eton mess cheese cake, or a classic homemade crumble and bread and butter pudding! We’ll save you a seat 😉

We sat outside near the river a perfect spot on a warm summer's day. Enjoyed a very large and tasty haddock with chips and peas. Food was hot and served with a smile by staff who were working none stop as it was busy lunch time. We enjoyed the ambiance of the Bell and will return.

User

The food was top nosh for the price and the staff very friendly, great setting outside in the sun and such a great location, recommend to anyone.

User

Lovely meal with excellent fresh vegetables and good helping of meat. Live music was a fantastic surprise and just perfect for a sunny Sunday. Not our first time here, nor our last. Very reasonably priced. Hard to beat.

User

Lovely meal for Father’s Day prompt service on a busy day and lovely food perfect for my dad who loves traditional meals like steak and ale pie

User

Lovely evening meal, then went back next day for lunch. Friendly staff, lovely food x

Kevin & his team are tops again...

Living not too far from The Bell it’s a super local & I find the welcome so genuine, the food & drink always excellent. So being gluten free as many people now are....Kevin straight away promised to get some buns in for their super “Burger Bonanza”

Tonight I’ve enjoyed a proper burger just the way I like it thank you all xxx

It's a really amazing pub to have a nice cold pint in the sun with the misses. Bloody good live singer too!!! Totally recommend!

User

Had dinner there Friday night and it was delicious. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Great food and glorious setting. Thank you xx

User

Had a meal here on Monday for my daughters 17th, Our waitress was lovely, the waiter who bought our food needed to pay a tiny bit more attention to what he was doing, but the food itself was absolutely lovely! Our waitress happily brought out the cake and candles I provided and started off the happy birthday song and many of the pub goers joined in - will recommend!!!

User

Fab food massive piece of fish and hubby had homemade steak pie plus we are greedy and had the platter absolutely delicious, friendly staff too top notch

User

Amazing Amazing Home cooked food and the hand cut chips are the best . The Food was presented really great and customer service 100% .

Would highly recommend.

User

Fantastic starters shared platter could have had that as my main meal had the curry for main was lovely wish had just rice and not the chips which where lovely but more like wedges/roast potatoes, which would have been perfect with a Sunday roast.

Staff and service friendly and excellent

Visited The Bell for lunch today and I would gladly have given in 5 stars but unfortunately the young woman who brought our food out to us in the garden was very rude and unhelpful, hence my rating has dropped two stars. Other than that, the location is great, the pub is lovely, large and clean and a very nice old building, well maintained. The grounds are also well maintained and the views over the river second to none. Shame about the rude waitress but I wouldn't let her put me off going there again. Although she did put us off having a pudding or more drinks today!

User

Somewhat uninspiring crab salad. Would have been nice if there had been some chopped pepper, celery, radish, sweet corn or anything for a bit of colour and a bit of bite. Crab was fresh & tasty. Hubby had chilli beef and wedges, clearly leftovers from Sunday lunch and left over jacket potatoes. Ok but prob won’t be back.

User

Lovely location ,We have been before & the food was lovely , but this time the meat in the pie we had was not at all tender ,

User

I love coming to the bell inn because of it being a friendly dog pub. However upon arrival a young girl who was serving behind the bar had a very bad attitude and appeared she couldn't be bothered to serve us. At this point the pub wasn't busy. She didn't seem to know the stock but that could be because she was new. When we sat down waiting for our lunch a lovely lady asked if we would like a bowl of water for my dog and was very friendly and helpful. The food was very nice but was not very hot. I would come here again but I do think some staff need to improve upon their manner of serving customers.

User

Was a little disappointed as we didn’t feel we got value for money.. two burgers two drinks and late onion rings = £37 plus the chip portions were small and chips were reheated as well Would expect a vast improvement on a return visit

User

Really disapointed tonight. Told i had to wait 30mins before any more food orders could be taken but then 15 mins later i see others ordering. When i complained the young girl at the til cried. She was clearly under pressure from her boss or the chef and said people kept shouting at her to not take orders and i am guessing she was not used to taking complaints either. Perhaps the owner should work on customer service and make a happy atmosphere. None of the staff looked happy tonight. Dont think we will bother coming back. Shame as used to be a lovely pub.

User

Just back from what should have been a lovely family lunch by the river on a beautiful day. The scenery was spot on but unfortunately that was the only thing that was. Super disappointed with the food and the overall service my roast dinner was sooooooo disappointing as the turkey was just bone and fat and really should not have been served as it was! It looked horrendous and not at all edible. when i complained (which I literally have never done at restaurants as I’m really not a fussy eater) the lady completely agreed and apologised (and seemed quite genuine) however when I told her to complain to the kitchen for me she then simply told me that they apologised but said that they hoped I enjoyed the rest of the meal!!!!! I just smiled as wasn’t sure how to take it but I’m sure I sensed sarcasm in there?!?! The bar itself was boiling and heaving and it took forever to get a drink. when I finally ordered and paid for my drinks at the bar I then had to wait literally 30 mins for a pint of Carlsberg before finally being told to order something else as the carlsberg wasn’t working. To then top off the afternoon the baby had a poop and needed changing and after searching for the baby change I was then informed there was no baby changing in the building I had to change my 6 month old on the grass outside surrounded by the million wasps that accompanied each customer at their individual tables! Not fun!! I really am not one to moan but I went to the bell inn to have a relaxing family lunch and came away a lot more frustrated and stressed than when I went
