The George
The George Cavendish, Suffolk Description
A warm welcome awaits you in this 16th century restaurant with rooms. The George is situated on the edge of the village green in Cavendish, positioned in between the popular villages of Clare and Long Melford and just a short drive from the timeless village of Lavenham.
Since October 2010, co-owners Lewis Bennet & Bonnie Steel have achieved their 1st Rosette and four stars from the AA & Visit Britain tourist guides.
The emphasis at The George is on the quality of food and customer service. The menus offer a wide range of dishes to suit all tastes and budgets. The menus change frequently and are guided by the seasons. We aim to use the highest quality, sustainably sourced ingredients and utilise our garden to grow seasonal items such as baby leaf, beetroot, edible flowers, tomatoes and herbs to use on the menu.
The George has five contemporary rooms available for bed and breakfast, priced from £50 single occupancy and £75 double. We also have and extra bed and travel cot facilities so families can stay as well. See the Rooms page for more information or use our online booking facility and BOOK ONLINE.

What can we say other than FANTASTIC ! The food was amazing, the service was outstanding and nothing was any trouble to the wonderful staff. We went there tonight to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had a lovely evening. The staff felt that as we had to wait a bit longer than they would have preferred to receive our food (although it seriously was fine and we didn't feel we had to wait too long), they gave us drinks on the house without having had any complaint from us! Once they knew it was our anniversary they made such a fuss of us and made us feel really special. Just genuinely nice people who want you to have a good experience. Thank you everyone, we will come back again soon and would highly recommend The George - 5 stars!
We had a wonderful meal out for our anniversary. My parents go regularly and have always recommended it and was pleased to say it was everything and more we had hope for. I had the bouillabaisse and the flat iron steak which both were amazing and highly recommend. Really great evening and the staff were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble.
Visited today for a quick drink. Waitresses were absolutely amazing, nothing was too much trouble for them! The pub was busy, yet the care and attention they gave was truly second to none. My companion was a little old lady in a wheelchair, the staff helped us in, without even being asked. We shared a sandwich, yet were treated as well as every other diner in there. The food looked and smelled delicious. Thank you so much ladies!
The venison haunch wa cooked perfectly, and thanks the Chef for the lovely plate setting for my dessert.
The food is excellent, a bit more "gourmet" than a pub. Awesome drink selection and best staff ever.
Superb meal for my pre birthday !!! Best lamb I've ever eaten!! A slight hiccup with the delay in side orders but staff dealt with it perfectly! Highly recommend!!
Stayed here for a relaxing two nights with my husband. We found the staff to be very friendly and informative when we asked about the surrounding area, the room was clean and comfortable with a nice view of the courtyard and the food was tasty too. Definitely more of a foodie pub/restaurant than a drinking pub but a fab place to rest for a few days. Short drive to Bury St Edmonds and other local villages.
Had my first visit to The George last night. Wow. I was very impressed. The decor is nicely done. Tables not too close to each other. The food was fantastic. Everything about it was fantastic. Would definitely recommend coming here. I will be back again soon!

Fantastic meal to celebrate my partner’s Birthday. The Happy Birthday piped in chocolate on his dessert plate and a candle was a lovely touch. Waitresses and food were great.
Emphasis on simplicity here in cuisine and interior. Very unfussily laid-out which somehow doesn't give much of a clue that the food will be so good. You can have a drink at the bar. The little room towards at the back is quite sparsely decorated but it adds to the unstuffy easy atmosphere. I've often thought they do the best burgers I've ever had but little things surprise you: really tasty new spuds for instance. It adds such a lot to the whole plate. No nasty little bowls of 'seasonal veg' (i.e. Carrots, cauli and broccoli). Plenty of choice on the menu but not so long that it all can't be made to order. Good specials choice. Glad to live nearby cos it's good to bring people here. (No, I don't know the owner.) Have to mention coffee and sorbet which are both noticeably good.
Best birthday meal of my life and I am 53 today food and service superb could not rate it higher have booked to go back

Ann and I decided to see what all the fuss was about, so after a day in London we stopped for dinner and a night (pre booked). The food was amazing probably one of the best meals we have eaten out in a long while. Staff are friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be coming back in fact already booked for February if we can wait that long!! Thank you
A group of us went for our Christmas do here, The George has a very welcoming atmosphere and deco. Would recommend this for groups or romantic meal. The food looked and tasted amazing. Will definitely return with family when they visit. Xx
A big thank you to all staff for a fantastic lunch today to celebrate my Nan's birthday & a big thank you from my youngest daughter for going to the trouble of organising her a dairy free menu to pick from. I will defiantly recommend to friends & hope to visit again soon

Food is sublime, waitresses are darlings and the setting whether inside or in the garden is tranquil and gorgeous.

Pity they had not got us booked in after my Daughter had made a booking on Wednesday before to celebrate my Husbands 70th Birthday. Not exactly impressed food mediocre ..... Have had better. Welcome was curt but made room for us. Won't be returning.
I.m afraid it was a bit disappointing the starters came late and were not to gether. The trout was over cooked . The rissotto tasted of vinegar.and I thought it was strange to put beetroot with it. The sweet. Well. A huge plate with I sloppy pear and a dollop of ice cream was. Very lost indeed. My husbands sweet was burnt. And he had the wrong steak. So all in all not very appetising. But service was good and company great.
