The History Of Advertising Trust Description

Over the last thirty five years, The History of Advertising Trust has amassed the largest archive of British advertising in the world. It is a unique collection that dates from the early 1800s to the present day. And it continues to grow. It provides examples of the work, the stories behind the names and brands on our High Streets, the ideas and research that led to their development, within the context of the advertising industry in particular and society as a whole.

We aim to not only preserve and document all this work in an easily accessible form but to offer it as inspiration for today’s students and practitioners alike.

The Vimto collection at HAT ranges from the company's 1908 founding to present. From drinking a Vimto as a health tonic in the aromatic environs of a herbalist shop, to shlurping a can on a garage forecourt, the brand's complete story lies in its archive.

Adverts were once hand-painted directly onto buildings. Many survive, often faded, clinging to the walls that host them. These ghost signs provide a window onto the past and showcase individual craftsmanship, style and technique. http://ow.ly/t4c750pDSoP

On this day in 1951, the Peak District was designated Britain's first National Park. In the same spirit, we thought we would share these scenic views for your enjoyment and wonder.

From the first season at Skegness until the late 1960s, visitors to Butlin's wore a small enamel badge to identify themselves as guests. With each year, came a new design, specific to each resort. The first image below shows the Founder's Badge (Skegness, 1936).

Our Inspiring Minds project shares the stories of some of advertising’s most influential figures. The filmed interviews featuring adland legends, like Sir Alan Parker, talking about their lives & work, are an enduring inspiration. http://ow.ly/ZdbZ50pDno5

During WWII, Billy Butlin was charged with locating and building military training facilities at Filey, Pwllheli, and Ayr; later to become Butlin’s resorts. He was also Director General of Hostels, supporting the wellbeing of some 50,000 women doing vital work in munitions factories. This letter from the Civil Defence Authorities gave Billy the freedom to travel around Britain without restriction.

This further illustration of Butlin’s, Filey, in 1946 by Captain Bryan de Grineau, depicts the iconic chalet lines. What’s more, on the reverse, it has a preliminary sketch of a chalet’s interior. A magical insight into the artistic process.

These drawings depict Butlin’s, Filey, in 1946. They were produced by Captain Bryan de Grineau, an architectural artist, for the Illustrated London News. We think they are enchanting. (HAT manages, catalogues, and activates the Butlin’s Heritage Collection)

Our archive building is situated on the Raveningham Estate, under big Norfolk skies, which means our daily commutes look like this...

An audio-visual balm for a Monday in 2019. Click the link, sit back, and just be for a minute (and 2 seconds). https://www.hatads.org.uk/…/66df59e8-10 0e-4a26-87a8-0c84a3b…

There is much more to our archive than yellowed-papers and grey boxes. Far from being drab and dreary, it is bursting with colour, sometimes even edging towards, dare we say, neon.
