It is my job as a Registered Nutritional Therapist to find out through laboratory testing and taking your full health history, which part of your steroidogenic pathway is not functioning optimally and causing you symptoms of fatigue, re-productive issues (miscarriages, infertility), memory loss, thyroid problems, constipation, leaky gut... and produce a dietary and lifestyle prescription in order to address the root cause of your symptoms.
Yesterday was day 1 of my advanced ...hormone course with the Institute of Functional Medicine, covering adrenals, thyroid, and sex hormones. I am particularly interested in the weight gain mechanism in menopause. You can see how important cholesterol (Top left of the diagram below)is with regard to synthesising hormones, make sure yours isn’t too LOW! We actually NEED cholesterol, it is not all bad for you! Make sure your GP monitors your levels. For example, testosterone is synthesised from cholesterol. If you are someone who is experiencing erectile dysfunction, or low libido, low testosterone synthesis may be a contributing factor, as well as psychological factors.
STRESS, toxins, poor dietary choices, and lifestyle factors such as poor sleep hygiene, all impact enormously on your flow of hormone synthesis, their transport and their uptake in your cells. Changing these can have a major positive impact on your endocrine hormones (thyroid, pancreas - think insulin and type 2 diabetes), and your sex hormone production.
If you are stressed you need more of the stress hormone cortisol which means you need to take more progesterone in order to make this. This results in less hormone availability to make estroegen. Follow the arrows from progesterone across to Esterone, Esteradiol, and Esriol. Therefore stress (emotional or physical) maybe a reason for your estrogen deficiency and the symptoms you are experiencing. This is called the cortisol steal!

Got some leftover #chicken from your #BBQ, or your #roast dinner? Mix it together with tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, cucumber, flat leaf parsley and chopped coriander.
Add mayonnaise and seasoning and mix together.
Add to a bed of lettuce and eat as a salad or make it go further and be #thrifty by dividing it among slices of bread to give the kids in their packed lunch, or a work #packedlunch, or add it to your #picnic hamper.
