What makes a good blend? I ask this, because, we are seeing a rise in good quality single variety wines being produced, but should we be favouring a skilfully blended wine? Well, of course, there is no right or wrong answer to this question, as it is a matter of personal preference. The wine I have posted is a typical example of a very well blended Portuguese red wine from Lisboa region. Touriga Franca, Trincadiera, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvingon, are the grape varieties used ...here. And the wine has then benefited from 9 months aging in Barriques. Let's scrutinise the choices made by the wine maker.... -Touriga Franca is the dominant grape variety here. Found heavily in Port production, flavours are lighter and more aromatic that the other varieties it is companioned with. On its own, the wine could be too light and perfumy, and perhaps a little dry. -Trincadeira is usually grown in the Alentejo region, and provides a dark colour, and black fruits, however, on its own can struggle to reach a decent alcohol level. Also found in the production of Port. -Syrah, also known as Shiraz, but could be called Syrah in this case due to the use of Oak. Sometimes The choice of what name is offered reflects the style of wine produced. In this case, Syrah ages well in oak, offering a slight leather note, along with liquorice and dark chocolate.The addition of Syrah also woukd have added to raise the alcohol content that may otherwise have been lacking -Cabernet Sauvingon is used but not in a dominant manner. Perhaps because this grape ages well, and may offer a small vegetal note on the palate. So, we can start to see the complex vision our Vintner may have had. In some cases, the blending occurs after vinification, but in this case, the blending took place after pressing, adding to the mystery and excitement. No one could be sure exactly what our end product would taste like. Well, the gamble has paid off handsomely. This really is a very good wine. So why age the wine in Barriques?
