“We wanted to encourage surfing at a grassroots level,” explained Arlene Maltman- a British Surfing board member, “that’s saying to anybody, if you’re interested in qualifying, national championships are your first port of call. That was made very clear to every athlete.”
“I understand that there were conflicts at the time [of the event] and some people chose to do other things,” she continued. “Luke Dillon did not show up for either contest, he was, from what I understand, i...n Newquay that week, then he went on to a festival and then went on to South Africa in June, so that was unfortunate that he didn’t show up.”
While not competing in the British cup in Jersey meant Luke would be unable to qualify via the first and second place finisher spots, it should not have affected his eligibility for the wildcard position. The British Surfing team selection document clearly states surfers remain eligible if they have competed ‘at some point’ in ‘their respective Home Nations competition pathway.’ The phrase ‘at some point’ rather than ‘in the last year’ was presumably used deliberately here and as Luke has been competing in the English and British nationals for many years, he definitely ticks this box.

"Films about big-wave surfing almost all suffer by succumbing to the irresistible temptation to over play the hand. Waving around fully erect for 90 minutes in a state of over engorged high drama makes for great trailers but terrible films.
Heavy Water is a different film altogether. Eschewing the constant drama it spends most of it’s time building and maintaining an atmosphere of claustrophobic dread.
In its treatment of the emotional and physical extremes of big-wave surfin...g and the reality of death it transcends its subject matter.
The greatest film about surfing ever made, I think. Please allow me to persuade...."

"Nobody had ever done it successfully before. Taj tried it and went right through his board. Before that, Ace Cool got dropped into the water after hanging off a heli on the outer reefs, but not into a wave. No one had done it successfully before, and nobody believed we could do it. We had an uproar on the North Shore.
Eddie Rothman wasn’t happy because he thought I was going to crash the chopper into the water at Phantoms in his backyard. And a lot of the big time water saf...ety guys in Hawaii said it couldn’t be done. However Rusty and Brian Keaulana said the only guy that could possibly do it would be Nathan, but it still took years to get a safety crew together as the water safety guys wouldn’t work with us and that led to not getting a permit.
It was a pig fuck in a barnyard. It was not easy to get done. With that and the controversy with Sion, all hell was breaking loose, it was supposed to be easy, get in, get out and move on, but it became another crazy turn on the North Shore wheel, which I guess is just how it is."
