About 20Th Century Flicks

A video shop for the ages, owned and run by a small but astute band of film fanatics, complete with two small cinemas you can hire to watch movies in.

20Th Century Flicks Description

Well, I'm David Taylor, a white male with scruffy hair and a particular fondness for American independent cinema from the 90s. I also have an alarming ability to recall film index numbers without referring to the computer; information which has presumably replaced important memories from my childhood.

Then there's David White. He's an 80s Hollywood cinema expert with a closely-groomed head and glasses. Him and his ladyfriend have just created their first child. He also has a passion for classic British horror and 80s coming-of-age dramas.

We're not all called Dave. Adam Hart is an itinerant hobo who has nonetheless managed to remain in orbit of the video shop the past two decades. He has little time for Hollywood, preferring tales of underdogs from far-away places. He is also our main reviewer and his dry summations are often key deciders in what our customers end up taking home.

Rob Browne is the longest serving member of staff. He started when it opened and though he now has a proper job as a teaching assistant in a local school, he remains a valued part-time fixture behind the counter. His film tastes range from 'Anything With Kate Beckinsale In' all the way to 'Anything With Julianne Moore In'.

This month we've taken the most money we could have ever imagined for years and years and years and we're really really chuffed. ... Thank you. Keep watching movies!!!

Gotta love a bit of old fashioned people power. Let’s hope this tips the balance in favour of our friends and neighbours who’ve created so much with that space.

As Frank Spencer once said... “Ooh, Betty!”

The nights are drawing in and the street glistens in the cold rain... A barber pulls a lever and a lifeless man slides off his chair through a trapdoor.... A woman finishes her song in an empty Karaoke bar and collapses to the floor... Welcome, to The 20th Century Flicks Film Quiz!
From your regular hosts Pip & Mr Bags, this month will see a mix of the usual rounds (pictures, now showing and soundtracks) as well as some preemptively-Halloweeny horror-related conundrums to solve. As usual, it's £1 entry per person, and a maximum team size of 6. See you on the Stepssssss.....

As the Autumn Equinox rolls around and the nights begin to draw in, wrap-up, get close to the fire, and immerse yourself in an outdoor screening of experimental folk horror ARCADIA. If you've seen the sign hanging outside our shop that Matt painted, you'll know the Arnold Brothers mean business. We heartily recommend a visit to their beautiful and weird shop in St Nicks...

The bell will be ringing in 60 minutes. Don't be late for your first lesson.

After our little break over the summer, the 20th Century Flicks Film Quiz is back at The Christmas Steps pub! Expect the usual combination of fiendish trivia and Bavarian accents from your regular hosts Pip & Mr Bags. As usual, it's £1 entry per person, and a maximum team size of 6.

Poppy is patiently waiting for Big Trouble In Little China to start. I've explained the the 7pm crew may not want a weird cat sat taking up a seat. She shrugged, and remains in position.

best video shop in the world

We've been hiring DVD's from 20th Century for over ten years and we love the service we get (particularly as non-film-buff people). We hired the cinema for my birthday which was a brilliant experience. We recommend 20th Century to all of our Netflicks and Fire subscribing friends as the collection available, I think, is bigger and better.

User

Very welcoming and the cinema is ace. Even better than the old location!

Cool place with super cool staff!

User

Used the kino today for daughters birthday party absolutely brilliant everyone enjoyed it and brilliant service throughout!

Highly recommend it !

User

Thanks for making my birthday night out so special. I would highly recommend the Kino cinema to everyone and I'll definitely be booking another film soon xx

User

Thank you so much! Kids loved the videodrome & you guys couldn’t of been more friendly & helpful, we’ll definitely be back without the kids

User

Super amazing and lovely staff. Cosy surroundings that make you want to stay forever. Thanks for having us, we had an amazing time!

User

Such a fun thing to do, hiring a 11 seater cinema, our session was £50 so a cheap night of entertainment, especially as you can bring in your own food and drink! We were allowed to arrive earlier as the film we chose, which was included in the price ran over the 2hrs. There is a kitchen area with plates, glasses etc so good I'm back there end of Oct!

User

Lovely people, great selection of films, great prices 😀

User

Just very cool

Introducing my friends to The Room in the Kino whilst eating a choc-ice is all I've ever wanted and more. Great place, great staff, cute cats. WOULD RECOMMEND.

User

I have been renting movies from here for over half my life, and the staff have never ceased to be warm, helpful and genuinely interested in film. Many times I've wandered in with only a half-formed idea of what I wanted, and have been guided to something wonderful and unexpected. Since the move to Christmas Steps things have only got better - everyone should hire out the wonderful, comfortable, BYOB Kino!!

Long may it reign.

Had a lovely time celebrating husband's birthday in the Cinema with champagne picnic. Staff very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to come again!

User

Fantastic option for a party, great venue friendly welcoming staff

User

Fabulous little place - thank you for giving our daughter a birthday party that her and her chums will remember 👌🏼👍🏼

User

Brilliant little party venue. Have used it a few times now.

User

Best night watching Almodovar, and a little Twin Peaks snippet while in the red lodge!!! Utter gem of a place, perfect oasis, will be back!!!!

User

Absolutely great experience of hiring the Kino for a friend's surprise birthday party. The staff couldn't have been more accomodating and friendly. Would 100% recommend it!

User

A wonderful time was had by all! Dave was so helpful in helping me organise my husband's surprise birthday party in the kino. They didn't have the title I wanted in stock (I'm rather proud of that, given their extensive library!) so he sourced it and ordered it in for us. Really friendly service, done properly by enthusiasts who clearly know their stuff. So good to see a business like this thriving in the days of movies-on-demand! I am recommending it to everyone. Thank you for a wonderful evening & we look forward to returning.
