To round up our Defence Engagement week, we are introducing Major Susan Johnson QARANC, who is one of the Regiment's Recruitment and Engagment Officers. Major Johnson has been in both the Regular Army and the Reserves for nearly 35 years and is a well respected and active member of the unit managing a number of role's including 2IC A Sqn, Welfare Officer and President of the Officer's Mess. Currently employed by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust as a Specialist Nu...rse Practitioner Major Johnson has skills both in Paediatrics and Midwifery. We find out more below how the Reserves have both developed Susan and how it has supported her in her NHS role.
-How has being in the Reserves developed you? I have been able to attend Leadership and Management courses, Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Advisors course, Intermediate Life Support (both adult and paediatric) and opportunities to instruct in the unit and be part of the Paediatric Facility which is Tri-Service. All of this has been funded by the Reserves but the experience and qualifications are transferable to the NHS and these opportunities has improved the way I deliver care to my patient's.
-What benefits have you found being in 306 HSR? The camaraderie within the Regiment is second to none and I regard 306 HSR as my second family. The life experience shared – on exercises – deployed to Canada & Germany, military training weekends and adventure training undertaken – learning to ski, sail, rock-climbing, mountain-biking, kayaking and walking have all provided me with some fantastic memories and stories to take back to my family and work colleagues. Being in the Reserves has made me a more rounded individual who can relate to anyone, in any environment and any situation. Giving me confidence to be able to express myself professionally and enabling me to be a reliable and valued member of my clinical team.
-What does being in the Reserves mean to you? I am very proud to have served in the NHS for 38 years and been an active member of the Army Regulars/Reserves for nearly 35 years. I definitely wear my uniform with Pride. I am just as passionate about the Reserves now as I was when I joined.

Where have you been on exercise with 306 HSR? -I have been fortunate to have participated in some really great military exercises in countries such as Canada, Poland and Germany.
Whats been one of your most memorable experiences in 306 HSR? -Working with the Americans on Exercise SABER STRIKE in Poland was probably the most interesting thing I’ve done recently, it was great to work with some awesome people from a different healthcare system.
