The Ultrasound Scan Service
Ultrasound scans tell us a great deal about your baby. At both the Spire Alexandra Hospital and the Kings Hill Medical Centre Mr Penman provides a comprehensive ante-natal diagnostic service using state of the art ultrasound equipment (GE Voluson 730 4d /3d scan machine) capable of producing 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound pictures of your baby.
The primary purpose of any scan is to assess the wellbeing of your baby but every effort is always made to obtain good ultrasound pictures for you to take away. Both 2D, 3D and 4D (real time moving 3D images) scanning is performed at all scans after 10 weeks. There is no additional charge for 3D and 4D scanning. At the end of any scan, you will be provided with a formal report of the scan findings which will be fully explained to you.

A copy of this report can also be sent to your GP, Obstetrician and or midwife. If any abnormal findings are detected, these will be fully explained along with the options for further tests (CVS or amniocentesis) or scans as appropriate. Still images (ultrasound pictures) are provide for all scans and beyond 11 weeks a DVD with the moving pictures as seen during the scan and a CD containing a selection of still pictures (JPEG) are also provided at no additional cost.
All scans are performed by Mr David Penman, who is a consultant gynaecologist and specialist in Fetal Medicine.
3D / 4D scanning
Normal ultrasound machines produce a 2D (cross section) picture but recent advances in ultrasound technology allow a sequence of 2D pictures to be digitally reconstructed to produce a 3D picture of your baby.
The most recent advances allow this reconstruction to occur so fast that the baby can be viewed in real time 3D (known as 4D scanning, 4d pregnancy scan, 4d baby scan) thus the baby can be seen moving etc in 3D.
No additional charge is made for 3D /4D scanning but it is important to remember that as with 2D scanning, there are a number of factors such as the stage of the pregnancy, the position of the baby, the size of the mother and abdominal wall scarring from previous surgery that may prevent good quality images being obtained.
Fetal gender (baby’s sex, boy or girl)
The sex of the baby can be determined with 99% accuracy at the anomaly scan (22 weeks) in the majority of cases so long as the baby is cooperative.
Using different criteria, the sex (gender) of the baby can be determined with a lower accuracy rate at the Nuchal scan (11 – 13 + weeks) in 70% + of cases. The accuracy increases from 80% in the 11th week to 90% in the 12th and 95% in the 13th week. We are happy to attempt to let you know if your baby appears to be a girl or boy at scans beyond 11 weeks at no additional charge.
