“The first time you encounter a particular book is the right time to read it” - Marie Kondo. . Most people have books in their home that were bought (or gifted) with best intentions to be read but for some reason they’ve never been picked up or have only been read halfway through. . As you tidy these books pick each one up..... . ✨Ask yourself why you haven’t read it. Is it likely that you are ever going to get round to reading it – if not then it’s time to consider passing it on to someone that will read it. . ✨If it’s an academic book or travel book that you’be kept for reference ask yourself whether the information it contains is still up to date & relevant. Would you actually use the book or refer to the internet for that information. . ✨cookery books - people tend to have a few favourites that they use & then lots that are never opened. If you’ve got a book that contains one recipe you love consider taking a photo of it and storing it in a recipe file on Pinterest. . ✨Some books will have sentimental value to you – check to make sure you still feel this way and then keep them with confidence. .
Once you’ve selected the books you want to keep you can then decide how they are going to be displayed on your shelves so that you can enjoy and access them easily. Give pride of place to your favourites- display them like works of art and enjoy them!

If you’re looking to cash in on your clutter take a look at this Daily Mail article - it lists some great apps that will let you know whether it’s worth trying to sell things or not. See my earlier post for ideas of where to donate the items that aren’t worth selling.
The added bonus of the Daily Mail article is that it features me on video as “woman folding clothes KonMari style”! 😂

I had a ⭐️ of a helper when I worked with this family! . Some tips for tidying books with children. . 1) Ask them to collect all their books from around your home – get them to look under their beds and in toy boxes!
... .
You could make tidying fun by giving a “prize” for the person with the biggest pile of books!
2) Once all the books are gathered together in one area sort them in to different categories, for example.
✨ Sort by who owns the book (you can only make decisions about discarding objects that are your own – a great lesson to learn!).
✨ If the books are shared you can sort by genre of book (picture books, fiction, reference/”how to” books.
✨ Sort by age group (a good way to review books that have been outgrown).
3) Get your children to pick their favourite books – one at a time – ask them to say what they really like about the book. Encourage them whilst they do this as they are telling you about the sorts of books they like – I know lots of parents that would like their children to read more!
.
4) Work through the remaining book piles - one book at a time - selecting the books they enjoy. Put books that are no longer wanted to one side - it’s great if your child could think about what they learnt from the book as they say goodbye to it.
5) Also put aside damaged books or ones they outgrown. Libraries, preschools & charity shops will take childrens books that are in good condition.
6) Finally look at your storage areas. If you have a bookshelf in a playroom or bedroom use this. Organise the books on the shelves & leave space to display favourite books with the cover facing forward.
.
Consider putting a few books out on display at a time and storing the rest in a box. You’ll be surprised how much more use the bookshelf will get when the children can actually see what’s on it! When the books on display have been read swap them over with the stored books - make sure to decide whether you still want to keep the books as you swap them over.
Good Luck!

So... we’ve established that you can keep all the books you love that Spark Joy. . Next up - let’s make sure you know what’s on your bookcase so you can find the books you want to read & see the books you love. . I recommend taking all your books off of your shelves & gathering them all together (if there are too many to do in one go split it in to types of books (cookery, fiction, classics etc). ... . Pick up each book & ask yourself what it means to you. If it’s a reference or cookery book when you last looked at it. . If it’s a book that Sparks Joy put it to one side. . More on what to do with books you haven’t read yet on Thursday. . Half Term Tip - children love helping to tidy and sort though things (it’s what they do at school!). I’ll share some tips on tidying children’s books tomorrow.

Happy Valentines Day - I hope your day is full of things you love!
One of the most common misconceptions about the KonMari™ Method is that Marie Kondo believes that you should discard most of your books & that 30 is the optimum number.
I can assure you that this isn’t the case!
... If you follow the KonMari™ ethos then you should ask yourself whether each book brings you joy & is still relevant in your life – if the answer is yes to either of those questions then keep the book with confidence!
A bookcase is one area in a home that can truly reflect a your interests, beliefs & lifestyle. I often ask clients to stand & look at their work once they have sorted their books to see if they feel it is a reflection of who they are.

If you’ve been decluttering and have lots of unwanted ‘stuff’ have a quick read of the guest blog post I’ve written for APDO (Association of Professional Declutters & Organisers).
It’s full of suggestions for where to take some of the harder to donate items, such as bras and bedding, that charity shops don’t want.

If your wardrobe is a bit short on hanging space don’t despair!
Prioritise the clothes that need to be hung - jackets, suits, shirts, dresses and skirts. Everything else can be folded and stored in baskets.
In this wardrobe the jeans, jumpers, t-shirts and scarves are folded and stored upright in baskets on the shelves. This ensures that everything is easy to see and maximises your available storage space.
... Storing your folded scarves in a basket not only looks pretty but also means you can see all your scarves in one go.

Children’s shoes seem to spread everywhere & can rarely be found in pairs when you need them!
Some quick tips for keeping on top of them.
Collect every pair of shoes in the house & separate in to piles - one for each child.
... Sort each pile in to pairs - choose the favourite pairs (let your children help you decide) & obviously keep the school shoes!
Remove any shoes that are broken or too small. If you’re saving shoes that are in good condition for younger siblings pop them in a bag labelled with the shoe size & put it somewhere you’ll remember to check. If you want to donate to charity @salsshoes will find new feet for your old shoes!
The final step is to find homes for the remaining shoes & let your children know where they should be kept.
I always recommend finding a place for school shoes & bags (near the front door) - encourage your children to put their shoes there when they get home from school (this is replicating what they do at school so they’ll be used to it).
Try using a storage basket for the rest of the shoes - if you have room for a unit with baskets for each child that works a treat! (Something like @ikeauk Kallax units & baskets).
Take a look at my website (link in bio) for more decluttering tips.

Today was all about shoes!
Shoes are fast becoming one of my favourite categories to organise because clients are always amazed by the number of pairs they own & the end result is always so visually satisfying!
✨We always find shoes that aren’t worn because they’re uncomfortable✨
... ✨We always find long forgotten shoes✨
Today’s client was amazing! After categorising & sorting her shoes they are now in 1 (rather than 3) shoe racks. Everyday shoes & boots can all be seen & chosen quickly every morning. ‘Going out’ & ‘summer sandals & flip flops’ are stored in boxes to keep them dust free. We were so motivated we went on to #declutter bags afterwards!
Are you a bag or shoe (or both 😳) person? Message me for hints & tips!

The KonMari™️ Method isn’t just about decluttering your home, it encourages you to curate a home that supports you both now and in reaching your future goals.
Step 1 of the method is to Imagine Your Ideal Lifestyle so that you have this in mind when you start tidying.
Take a look at my new blog (link in bio) to see why this is such an important step & to get some tips on how to do it.

I was recently asked what life is like as a KonMari™️ Consultant & whether I spend everyday tidying my home?
The answer’s “No, I don’t spend everyday tidying!”
The beauty of decluttering & organising your home this way is that you tidy up once & for all.
... You become more aware of what’s in your home & you find a place for everything.
This means that the hustle & bustle of everyday life can go on but at the end of the day it’s easy to quickly walk around your home & pop everything back where it belongs.
So rather than worrying about how the house looks I spend everyday getting on with the important task of enjoying life & having fun with the people I love.

I'm loving how Marie Kondo's new Netflix show has got people talking about decluttering. I feel so privileged to work with people as they go through the process of transforming their homes (and lifestyles) & it's great to be able to encourage more people to give it a go!
I was invited on to Sasha Twinings BBC Radio Solent show this morning to talk about all things KonMari™
It's over 3 segments:... • Intro: 1.08:10 - 1.11 (Sasha talking about Marie Kondo) • 2nd: 1.14:30 – 1.19:20 - Categories & “Spark Joy” • 3rd: 1.24 – 1.29 – wardrobe declutter explanation

KonMari™️ fever is contagious!
Households across the UK are spending the weekend decluttering their homes, checking to see if items Spark Joy & filling bags for charity shops.
Charity shops are enjoying the uplift in donations but there are some things they can’t accept (eg: bras, electrical items, toiletries).
