Rare brown hyena sightings in the Kwando Reserve, Botswana.
Last week, Kwando Safaris successfully identified a BROWN hyena den at Lagoon camp - much to everyone's excitement!
The guides debated for a few days on the sighting being a brown hyena or an aardwolf - this was before they managed to snap a clear picture.
... Brown hyena seemed almost impossible because it does not feature in this area of the country, on Botswana's distribution maps of the species (where the Kwando Reserve is). The brown hyena typically inhabits desert areas, semi-desert, and open woodland savannahs.
Kwando Safaris contacted a Maun resident brown hyena researcher with the photos who estimated that the cubs are about 5 months. He added that typical brown hyena behaviour is different from spotted hyena behaviour as they do not go out looking for food with adults (spotted hyena cubs do this from a young age) so they should be based from a den for approximately another 6 months. Den sites can change as is normal with spotted hyenas as well. Brown hyena adults would typically visit the den to bring food the youngsters so guests stand a very good chance of sighting this incredibly ELUSIVE animal if they are staying at Lagoon camp soon!
PS - guests at Lebala Camp also saw a pangolin this week one evening!

Returning to reality after a superbly organised safari by Francis and Aardvark in Kenya. The late night drive to Ololo Lodge in the Nairobi National Park, for first two nights set the scene. A visit to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage a highlight. On to Kicheche Mara camp, and the game sightings, and bird watching was amazing. Leopard, cheetah, lion, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, hippo, plus all the antelopes. Excellent guiding and hosting and comfort. The real bush experience followed at Speke''s Camp. Extraordinary, successful guiding by Ambrose, extraordinary hosting by owner Adrian Hughes. Wild and wonderful experience.

Louisa organised a lovely honeymoon to Botswana and the Seychelles for us. We couldn't have had a better service from them. They were in every detail before and after the trip. Plus also they offered a great mobile app with our itinerary, maps, tickets, important information, etc etc that was incredibly useful. Can't wait to book our next adventure with them!

Just returned from an outstanding trip to the Ngorongoro and the Serengeti booked with Aardvark Safaris. I've fallen in love with Namibia after an amazing trip organised by Aardvark Safaris. With bookend stays at Wolwedans camp ( knowledgeable guides and lovely sunsets) and Desert Rhino camp ( tracking a feisty female rhino and staying in a luxurious camp) we spent the majority of the time with Skeleton Coast Safaris

There are certain experiences and people that make an indelible mark on your Psyche and Bertus and Helga Schoeman and their legendary flying safari have made their mark on me.

Flying low in a 4 seater Cessna we were treated to incredible views of Namibian terrain with a running commentary from Geologist Bertus. We flew up the skeleton coast and saw seals, flamingos , whales , shipwrecks and miles and miles of deliciously deserted beaches ( except for the wildlife that is!) At night we stayed in truly isolated camps established by the Schoemann brothers and their father over the last thirty years. By day we learned about the history, flora and fauna and geology of the country and played in the world famous dunes transported by vintage Land Rovers. This certainly brought out the child in us...sliding down these 'roaring' beauties on our bums Is an abiding memory.

Our thanks to Francis Naumann for his impeccable organisation and Charlotte Opperman for encouring us to go there .
