About Abbeyfield - Whitehaven Society

We provide sheltered accommodation for the elderly over the age of 60 who are sufficiently mobile and would enjoy living independently in a large house.

Abbeyfield - Whitehaven Society Description

Whitehaven has had an Abbeyfield Home since the 1970's, with the present house being opened in 1987Its purpose is to provide sheltered accommodation for the elderly but does not provide nursing care. It is a two-story building, which is structurally very sound and requires the minimal of upkeep due to the low maintenance construction materials. It has 10 en-suite rooms and 10 one bed room apartments in a new extension built in 2012 The pleasant combined lounges and dining room has been extended by the addition of a conservatory, which facilitates a view of the immediate area.
The house is disabled-friendly with lifts to the upper floors and is maintained to a very high standard meeting all legislative requirements. A House Keeper with an assistant is on daytime duty providing two main meals a day, every day. Overnight cover is by an installed 'Careline' system, which provides a 24hour call out system for emergencies. A Committee member call out arrangement is also in place.
The House is set in its own grounds on a private residential estate, surrounded by well kept gardens, which are maintained to a high standard. A regular bus service into town, which is only a mile away, stops at the end of the drive.
