About Abingdon Hydro

Abingdon Hydro is a community organisation, set up by local residents to generate renewable, hydroelectric power from the River Thames by Abingdon weir. In doing so this will help reduce carbon emissions and generating funds to benefit the local community. Set at the western end of Abingdon weir, the proposed 100kW scheme is the only site suitable for hydro generation in Abingdon. The project has been under development since 2010, and it has been brought to investment-readiness by the commitment and hard work of the founders and early investors. Planning permission and an Environment Agency licence have been granted, and we are now in the process of raising the funds required to build it and then manage the hydro project once it is operational. After an initial share launch in late 2014, the project has raised £820, 000 against the initial target of £1, 250, 000. A terrific start, especially as this has mainly come from local investors and residents within Abingdon and the surrounding areas. We are now exploring a number of ways to raise the remaining funds required.
