In 2012, a new centre for children with Autism was opened called EXCEL. Children in EXCEL will remain in EXCEL from Year 6 to Year 13, MergerA merger with neighbouring school Bushloe High School was proposed towards the end of 2013. After several consultation periods, it was announced in Spring 2015 that Bushloe would close and would merge into Abington in September 2015 to form Wigston Academy under the new trust, Wigston Academies Trust. In September 2017, the age range of the school changed from 10 - 14 to 11 - 16. On Tuesday 1 September 2015, Abington Academy merged with Bushloe High School to become Wigston Academy under Wigston Academies Trust.
