Important information for any of our couples who are awaiting an induction, or going into labour imminently. Hopefully the situation will ease soon.

More interesting reading around why #induction or having a planned #caesarean before 39 weeks should be given due consideration.🤰🏻👶
Shared from The Positive Birth Movement. Thought provoking article new on their website supporting the #everyweekcounts campaign.
Extract:... Twenty years ago, the majority of women in Australia gave birth at 40 weeks; today it’s between 38 and 39 weeks and continuing to get earlier. The main reason for this shift is the growing proportion of planned early births that are happening at 36, 37 and 38 weeks, either by induction of labour or by planned caesarean. Professor Jonathan Morris, an obstetrics and gynaecology expert from Royal North Shore Hospital and the University of Sydney, said a recent healthcare study revealed up to 60 per cent of planned caesarean sections performed in Australia before 39 weeks gestation did not have a medical or obstetric reason. “There is a general lack of awareness amongst both clinicians and expectant parents of the short, medium and long-term implications of being born even slightly early,” he said. “Those last few weeks of gestation might seem insignificant, but – in reality – babies are going through crucial developmental phases towards the end of a pregnancy” “Our research has shown that for every week a baby is born before 39 weeks, he or she is at increasing risk of developmental delay at school. We have looked at the association between when babies were born and how they performed in kindergarten. We found for every week a child was born earlier than 39 weeks there was a small but significant increase in the likelihood of them being “developmentally vulnerable”. This means they scored poorly on two or more test categories. The risk was higher for babies born after a planned birth compared with those who had a spontaneous birth,” Prof Morris said.

Dehydration can be serious if it's not dealt with quickly.
In our previous post we talked about frequent feeding to ensure babies stay hydrated in the hot weather. As babies and young children are at increased risk of dehydration please look out for these signs and take your baby or child to the GP or A&E urgently if they:
1️⃣ seem drowsy... 2️⃣ breathe fast 3️⃣ have few or no tears when they cry 4️⃣ have a soft spot on their head that sinks inwards (sunken fontanelle) 5️⃣ have a dry mouth 6️⃣ have dark-yellow urine 7️⃣ have cold and blotchy-looking hands and feet . . . . . . . . #dehydration #hydration #hydrationstation #norfolklife #norfolkmums #childbirtheducation #babyfirstaid #summerholidays #sunshine #holidayseason #sunshineyday #parentstobe #mumtobe2019 #mummytobe #dadtobe2019 #breastfeedingsupport #formulafeeding #newborn #antenatalclass #antenatalclassesnorwich #antenataleducation #newbornboy #newborngirl #postnatalcare #pregnancyandparenthood @pregnancy_and_parenthood

That depends.....
Breastmilk is almost 90% water so if your baby is exclusively breastfed and you’re feeding as often as they are asking to be fed then they should stay hydrated. It may also be worth offering them the breast more frequently to ensure they don’t become dehydrated. Additional water is not necessary.
Your baby may have shorter feeds more regularly than usual but that’s because they’re wanting more of the watery milk that flows at the start of a feed to quench t...heir thirst.
Giving water may mean your baby doesn’t ask to be fed as often as they would otherwise and they don’t take sufficient milk. This, in turn, could result in poor weight gain and issues with supply.
What about if they’re formula fed? As the composition of formula milk does not change, then small amounts could be offered more often than usual. Formula milk should always be made up as per the instructions on the tin and never watered down.
Alternatively, sips of water could be offered but ensure your baby is still given their usual volume of formula milk. Babies should not be given bottled water as this may contain high levels of sodium. . . . . . . . . . #heatwave #sunshineyday #sunshine #norfolklife #norfolkmums #parentstobe #mumtobe2019 #dadtobe2019 #daddytobe #mummytobe #postnatalcare #hydrationstation #hydration #dehydration #newbornbaby #newbornbabyboy #newbornbabygirl #earlydays #holidayseason #summerholidays #breastfedbaby #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #formulafeeding #antenataleducation #pregnancyandparenthood @pregnancy_and_parenthood

“Women lie down when they give birth on the television, so surely that’s what I should do?”
May we politely suggest otherwise!
We recommend using more active positions where women make use of gravity and allow the lower part of their backs the freedom to move and therefore create more space in the pelvis for the baby to be born.
... Come along to our award winning antenatal classes where you can learn more about ‘actively’ birthing your baby!🤰🏻
