100 YEARS OF JOY After receiving serious injuries in WW1, John William Greaves (know as Jack), returned to Hyde and invested in a set of roundabouts. He lived on Norbury St (where the Mall now stands), with wife Amanda and daughter Lily. This was very convenient to having the roundabouts on Hyde Market Place. The roundabouts had 12 horses on rods, boats to sit in and 6 peacocks were soon added. The roundabout was hand turned, a wheel with a handle to get momentum. Daughter L...ily married Bill Cooke, so they became known as Cooke's Roundabouts, when John's health deteriorated. As well as Hyde, another set was run on Ashton Market. The Hyde one was built up on Thursday, ready for the Saturday market (the only market day back then) and taken down before Sunday morning. Rides were one penny, the rent being six shillings. In time the roundabout was allowed to remain in place, being covered by a tarpaulin when not in use. Bill passed away in 1934, when his son Gordon and daughter Pat helped their mum keep it going. One fine weekend Lily opened Friday and set a trend, with other stalls soon joining her. Market expansion brought competition from Seddon's of Ashton, whose roundabout was the other side of the market, swing boats also being introduced. When the Corporation wanted to open the market on Wednesdays, it was Lily they asked to get it started. Bill joined the Showman's Guild, using a stripped-out Leyland bus to transport his roundabouts to local fairs on. Another roundabout was bought, featuring the toys we see today. Renovation work was done over winter in two former stable buildings (where Clarendon and Donneybrook surgeries now stand). During WW2 the roundabouts still operated, without music, a Mr. Wood helping the family. After the war, a famous painting by Harry Rutherford of Hyde Market, actually featured Seddon's roundabout as Cooke's roundabout was elsewhere on tour at the time. The original 12 horses were sold, possibly ending up in a German museum. Pat's son Bill gradually became involved as a teenager. Her brother Gordon married, having a daughter, Gillian, and a son, Gordon jnr., who you now see manning the roundabout today. Come and join Gordon on July 6th, when he will hand turn the roundabout for one day only. An electric motor was fitted many years ago, the motor once being used in a submarine to raise and lower the telescope. We wish all the family a happy 100th anniversary, with huge thanks for their dedication to Hyde Market.

THE BANDS ARE BACK
On Whit Friday (June 14) Tameside will once again be hosting the hugely popular brass band contests. There will be 11 taking place across the borough, all organised by volunteers under the aegis of the Friends of Whit Friday Band Committees. Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council's executive member with responsibility for culture, commented: "These contests, which began in the 1880s, have rightly become known as the greatest free show on earth. Thanks to some... very dedicated volunteers they have expanded from their original base in Stalybridge and Mossley and spread right across the borough. "Nothing sums up the nine towns of Tameside more than the sound of brass which comes from deep within our industrial soul. The Whit Friday band contests are the jewel in the crown of Tameside's cultural events and it's no wonder they attract such huge crowds year after year." To have a chance of being crowned champions, bands must perform at a minimum of six contests. As well as demanding proof of musical prowess, the evening also tests bands' discipline, stamina and organisational skills. Defending champions Foden's have won the overall contest 16 times in the last 19 years, but they are guaranteed a difficult time if they are to defend the Rose Bowl. Adam Pickles, chair of FOWFBBC added: "Whether you've been before or not, the contests are an unbelievably exciting event. You never know which bands will be out and about on the circuit. With support from Tameside Council, the individual contests, businesses and an army of volunteers, it really is an evening to remember." Contests: Broadoak: Ashton RUFC, St Albans Avenue, Gambrel Bank, Ashton, OL6 8TU - 4.30 to 11pm. Carrbrook: Carr Rise, Carrbrook, SK15 3NY - 4 to 11pm.
