While your reading this review your probably contemplating a way of getting here?

Well keep the excuses to yourself, oh so you live 300 miles away, that's still not a good enough excuse!

I'd been meaning to visit Abyss in Stockport for year's but like you, never making the journey however yesterday that all changed

The stock is second to none, the advice is friendly, free and pertinent from their knowledgeable staff who are always on hand

I'd nearly fell out of love for the hobby the past few months, but seeing their amazing tanks, sparking some wonderful ideas of my own I decided not to give up on a hobby I have done for over 25 years

Absolutely amazing and I will definitely be back again in the very near future!

Thanks Abyss and the two helpful ladies that served me and my son yesterday whom I forgot to ask their names for my YouTube vlog

So now you've read this review, stop wasting anymore time and get over to them today!

User

Well what can I say!!! After traveling over an hour to get here wasn't disappointed. What an amazing store!! The staff and the owner so helpful any question you have these guys know the answer. Massive range of products and livestock, kept spotless. This is now my go to place for marine supplies

User

Visited the Abyss for the second time today and I am blown away with this place. Myself and my friend both keep marine and headed over for a ‘road trip’ from Leeds earlier in the month and were so impressed we returned again today. The stock at this place is stunning, fat healthy fish and beautiful bright and extended coral. The most important thing for me when visiting a marine shop is responsibly sourced and stocked tanks and sensible, honest staff who put the welfare of their animals first - the Abyss have hit the nail on the head here. We have received especially good customer service from Steve and Adam who not only spent the best part of an hour running around after us during both visits, asked all of the right questions when we requested fish or coral - ‘what size is your tank’ , ‘do you understand the feeding requirements of this’ etc, which again reassured us we were buying from a genuine honest store and not from someone out to make a quick back no matter the repercussions. The prices here are also extremely reliable with no mark ups of ridiculous prices for colony corals. As a result I can wholeheartedly trust their advice, and will be returning to stock my upgrade once set up in the coming months. Thanks again to Adam and Steve for making our visit so enjoyable, and I cannot recommend this shop enough be it for livestock or dry goods.

User

Made 2 visits this month well worth it. Steve and Adam both very knowledgeable helpful and friendly (marine). I keep a very large marine tank for several years and whilst I didn't need any advice or help they didn't know that, they both checked the tank size and suitability for stock which for a beginner would have been super helpful and for anyone having done it long term is reassuring that they are moral and care about their stock. Excellent variety of fish coral critters the works, all clean healthy and happy. Staff go above and beyond, even carrying the large heavy boxes and salt to car which for someone with arthritis and fibromyalgia but is able bodied really made life easier without them even knowing how those simple gestures make a mediocre staff in one place, make them excellent here. Well worth the trip and will certainly be back in the near future. Already recommended to other in the fish world. I do hope both the chaps we've dealt with get praise from management because they've been truly excellent. Highly recommended.

User

Just been down to the Abyss for their Halloween weekend. Absolutely brilliant. A* for effort- great experience for customers and their kids. What’s more is I got a Flame Angel for £39! Unheard of price. Also thought I saw the real Dracula. The likeness was just uncanny.

User

It’s always a treat to visit abyss, I live in Mansfield, Notts, but it is worth the day out to come over. It’s unique that the tanks are set up as if they were home displays not just soulless tanks with fish in. Also it’s the only place that I have ever visited in 20 years of fishkeeping that have fed the fish before you buy them. Not only that, because it takes about 1 and half hours to get home, my purchases were put in large bags and with a bit of filter media for the journey.

All the staff are extra pleasant and knowledgable. Abyss don’t just go the extra mile, they go way above and beyond what anyone else does out there. The choice of fish, invertebrates and coral are amazing. Keep up the good work.

See you again soon.

I set my tropical fish tank up 12 months ago with the help of the fantastic staff at Abyss they have been so understanding of my needs/wants & so knowledgeable & informative about helping me build my community tank with the right stock & breeds of fish & the right plants & foods.

I recently had a massive set back when my electric cut out for 4 days whilst i was away & sadly 24 of my 26 fish died, I was devastated & so disheartened & for over a month I have been trying to decide if I wanted to re build my stock after such a tragedy to me

I was given immense support & encouragement by Rachel who helped me decide to get my tank tip top again & re- stocked with her expert help in sorting the water issues i had & sadly performing plants, i'm now pleased to say my tank is looking great again & i'm looking forward to getting more gorgeous fish.

So thanks to all the staff that have helped me over last 12 months, in particular Bartek, Sam, Merc, April & especially Rachel as she even made me and my partner a lovely cup of tea this weekend, whilst continuing to support me & picking me some gorgeous fish & plants

Hands up! We're very new to the enjoyment of keeping fish, but have gone to lengths to make sure we are doing a good job.

With one exception (shoutout to Scott at Pets At Home, in Deepdale, Preston!) we were given categorically opposite advice to what we needed and could see happening in the tank by half a dozen local shops. After an hour and a half drive to Abyss, we finally found a logical explanation with trustworthy knowledge and experience to back up their advice and recommendations.

Stepping into Abyss, we didn't even make it one foot inside the door before we were offered a cuppa, and found one thing on the shopping list! Staff were friendly, approachable, and responsible - it became apparent that there's responsible training in place when we wanted to ask a member of staff a question and she immediately let us know she was still in training, then was proactive in finding someone else to help us. There were also LOTS of staff around, and not one person seemed to be slacking off. Looks like a really solid company culture, and made the entire experience a cut above all other interactions. All shelves were fully stocked; all tanks looked well maintained - and had some absolutely beautiful species!

From a customer experience perspective, I cannot fault the service at any stage. Especially April- she spent a great deal of time making sure we understood our tank better, and making sure we had the right equipment (even talking us through a a water testing kit!). Like all the staff, she wasn't shy about conceding to a colleague with more knowledge, and we really appreciated her honesty and opinions.

This review could honestly go on another few paragraphs. Really looking forward to seeing the Marine area come together - will definitely be back very soon!

Great shop had a great 2 hours with the staff going through what i could have and not have. Even showed me the fish feed. Really enjoyed my time

User

First time going to Abyss Aquatics and absolutely loved it. Fantastic stock, friendly, knowledgeable staff, and the best fish care I've ever seen in a store! Had some great help off a female staff member with pink hair (didn't catch the name unfortunately) and made a couple of great purchases; happy fish and happy customers

User

Due to living about a 5 minutes walk from the Abyss I find myself here almost every week!!

I love this shop. I am always greeted with friendly smiling faces (and often get offered a brew.) Whenever I have any issues with my tanks I get all of the information I need. Every fish I’ve bought from here have been really healthy and I know they are well looked after.

Each time I’ve been different people have served me but to this day the first person who ever helped me keeps asking how my shrimp/fish are doing. It’s so nice to be recognised as a person who is purchasing their goods/livestock and not just a number.

Everyone who works for the abyss has excellent customer service skills and even when it’s really busy and you can see they are rushed off their feet they still have smiles on their faces and don’t rush to give you advice, they take their time and ensure you are completely happy before moving on.

I recently bought a mustard gas betta and one of the girls even stopped to show me pictures she had taken of him showing off to her.

I believe everyone should visit the Abyss at least once to see how a real pet shop/fish store should work efficiently and effectively.

You guys are awesome!!!

User

Came in yestersay as im starting up an aquarium again! Spoke with Merc and Patrick who both exceeded expectations with both knowledge and customer service! They both spent plenty of time with us and made the visit very enjoyable! Also the lads were very accomadating to my heavily pregnant partner. Offering drinks and places to sit. Well done lads. Looking forward to coming again soon!!

User

Been a total of 4 times in two days, setting up two tanks. The staff were literally amazing- so much help off April, Josh, Adam and Bartek - they had extensive knowledge with what we needed. Can safely say it's our best choice to go now!

Thanks guys!

User

Absolutely amazing place. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We stopped in on our way home to Cornwall and bought 1 fish and 3 inverts, they were packed up in a polythene box with heat packs for the 8 hour journey and arrived back with us in excellent condition. The shop itself is amazing, so much choice, so many fish, corals and inverts and so clean and well presented, I only wish that I could give more than 5 stars

User

Started new marine set up with all the help from staff and they made it so easy top shop staff so helpfull would recommend to anyone to shop there

Bought daughter a tropical fish tank for her birthday ( our second tank so we aren't new to fish keeping) The new tank has a slow leak which we video recorded The Abyss, a shop we have spent a considerable amount of money in over the past few years, asked us to drain the tank and return it. This we did after putting the fish into bags and suspending them in the other tank. The Abyss have refused to replace or refund our money, despite a receipt being produced and us showing the video evidence of the leak. They are in breach of "Section 14 of the sale of goods Act 1979" having sold goods that are not of merchantable quality and failing to honour the contract between us. They wanted to test the tank... But being a slow leak it may well not have shown up quickly. And the only reason that they needed to test the tank was so they COULD get a REFUND from the manufacturer!!!

User

Was really looking forward to this place and was really disappointed. Was spoken to like a novice and told how I shouldn't have bought a reefer 425xl, or gone for a sumped tank, or used colony. These guys are very anti red sea and make it well known. Fish are way over priced - feel sorry for the customers that have no idea. No idea why they are against sumps and try to hard sell their Ehiem filters... get with the times guys. I won't be visiting again disgrace of a shop for customer service.

For the past few years we have been going to The Abyss as a family, both to enjoy the wonderful array of fish and also to buy everything for my own tropical tank.

My daughter's eighth birthday was just before New Year and, when asked what she would like as a present, she announced that she wanted her own fish tank in her room.

Initially we were going to get a basic cold water gold fish set up, but after taking advice from the staff at The Abyss, we opted instead for a small tropical set up, which cost just over £100 for the AquaStart 320 tank, filter, heater, gravel, air pump, airlines and ornaments.

We started noticing that there was a small amount of water gathering around the base of the tank, which we initially thought was due to spillage.

We cleared this water up, but it kept reappearing, indicating that there was a slow leak.

Also, water was getting into the LED light fitting, a bit worrying as this is powered by mains electric.

All this was reported to The Abyss and we were told to empty the tank and being it in for them to see.

This I did, temporarily bagging daughter's fish and suspending them in my own tank.

My daughter and I then took the faulty tank back this morning, along with the receipt and video and photographic evidence of the ongoing slow leak.

An older gentleman who I hadn't seen before was called over and, in a very bullish tone, he told me that they wouldn't give a refund or exchange until the tank has been tested.

He then went on to explain that this was so that THEY could get a refund from the manufacturer!

He totally disregarded the evidence that I had produced and was extremely rude to me in front of my young daughter and other customers, leaving her very upset.

He failed to acknowledge that the sale of the tank was formed a contract between us and The Abyss, not us and the manufacturer.

I cannot remember when I have seen a more unprofessional outburst and an absolute ignorance of Consumer Law.

Even if they had tested the tank, a slow leak would not have shown up immediately and there was no way that I was prepared to leave my daughter's fish bagged up for an extended period of time.

Needless to say, we are absolutely disgusted.

User

Every time I come here I either get ignored as though I'm invisible despite a 35 mile round trip which is frustrating. Although whilst I wait half an hour for someone to communicate with me I can see how expensive your fish and stock is. However, to the opposite side of the spectrum, some of your colleagues go for the hard sell route which just goes down like a lead balloon. I won't be visiting again, I can deal with much more pleasant members of staff who are than happy to communicate with me and to provide me with explanations as to why I would require particular pieces of equipment. A lot of work needs to go into your customer sales as with the so called "refund" policy. After being sold something I didn't quite want but was too polite to say no at the time, I didn't want to make the 70 mile round trip to be told I wouldn't get my money back. Thanks for wising me up and I'll making my friends and family aware.
