Verruca Needling Procedure Verruca seems to be one of the most common reasons why people visit their podiatrists. They are unsightly, contagious, usually painful and hard to treat and they could affect anyone at any age.
What is Verruca? Verruca, which is a wart that occurs on the sole or toes of the feet, is caused by human papilloma virus. The virus invades epidermis which is the outermost layer of the skin and keeps away from your immune system which is more active in the... deeper layer of the skin called dermis.
virus causes your skin cells to multiply much faster than normal leading to the formation of a rough to touch bump in the skin and entrapment of small nerve fibres and capillaries. Therefore, you might see black dots due to the rupture of capillaries or feel pain and discomfort caused by pressure on the nerves and surrounding tissues especially in the weight-bearing areas of the foot.
People who have a weakened immune system, such as people with diabetes or those on chemotherapy, are at a higher risk of developing a verruca.
Types of Verruca: As seen in the pictures, plantar warts could be individual or solitary warts Or Mosaic warts which are made up of clusters of plantar warts. These are normally more difficult to eradicate.
What does verruca needling do? Verruca needling is a minor surgical method which is carried out under local anaesthetic. During the procedure, a fine needle is used to puncture the verruca lesion and implant infected cells into the dermis where an immune response is encouraged that leads to the destruction of the virus.
This method has many advantages; • it has a much higher success rate (approximately 69%) compared to other methods (with approximately 15-20% success rate), • usually only one session of treatment is required, • if patient has multiple warts only the main lesion needs treating as the initiated systemic immune response will clear the other lesions.
At Achilles Foot Clinic we have used this method for a number of our patients and the outcome has been excellent.

Plantar Fasciitis or Policeman’s Heel Syndrome In the last few days we had a few people who walked in the clinic complaining of excruciating pain in their heels especially first thing in the morning. Based on their description of pain and a thorough examination the diagnosis has been Plantar Fasciitis, also known as Policeman’s heel, which is the most common cause of pain in the heel.
What causes Plantar Fasciitis? The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs along the so...le of the foot from the heel to the base of the toes and helps maintain the arch of the foot. Damage to this tissue particularly to the area where the tissue is attached to the heel bone can cause micro-tears and inflammation in the tissue. This is often associated to tightness in calf muscles. Long periods of standing on your feet, change of footwear, a sudden change in the body weight and extreme physical activities are some of the common triggers of plantar fasciitis.
What are the best treatments for Plantar Fasciitis? At Achilles Foot Clinic we provide a range of treatments including: - Stretching programme to relax your calf muscles and plantar fasciia - Padding and strapping to support your foot and remove stress from the plantar fasciia - Footwear and foot care advice - Insoles and orthotics to support the foot and correct misalignment of the joints which could be the cause - Ultrasound therapy which is an excellent method to treat acute and chronic inflammation - Etc In most cases, this type of treatment will cure the pain within weeks to a few months. Rarely, referral for steroid injection or surgery becomes necessary.
