The Formula for Success
The Art of War, is a book written by Sun Tzu, a Chinese General that was born before Christ. His books talk about five elements that we should consider when we are going to war. I read this book several times, as it always helped me in understanding more about marketing. The same principles apply to marketing and to businesses if you think about it.
The five elements are:
... Moral Law; which is sharing the business owner’s vision and mission, what they want to achieve from the business. Every team member will be working towards making this goal, rather than own plans, (Example Winston Churchill)
Heaven; and this is the different risks and dangers that might affect the growth, success, and failure of any business. These factors can be related to the economy, technology, weather conditions, law, purchase cycles, product lifecycle, and others, (Example Brexit)
Earth; factors may affect the business continuity, like death, product distribution, riots, strikes, security, floods, competition, proximity, brand adoption, etc. (Example, what happened yesterday in Paris)
The Commander; which is the company culture, and what does it stand for, what is the brand aspiration. What are different points of culture? These are elements that customers would like to aspire for or associate themselves with. For example at #ActionCOACH, there are 14 points of culture that we abide with. Method and discipline; by having the right team, each one of us possesses different capabilities. Thus it is imperative that the right person is in the right place. Most people go into business in the thing that they love, or the thing that they’re really good at, nevertheless, a lot of business owners are never taught HOW to run a business, or HOW to market their business.
Business owners are interested in having enough business that would result in generating revenue that answers their needs and requirements. A successful scenario would allow us to predict ...the number of leads we will attract on a monthly basis, how much they are going to cost us, and how they will impact the growth of the business. In summary, predict profits and cash flow.
Most business owners that I meet say that their marketing approach is word of mouth. In fact, this is a sit and wait for strategy. For your marketing, you should consider at least four to five different tested strategies. Examples of traditional marketing strategies included channels like newspapers, radio, television, outdoor, yellow pages, telephone directories, cinema, etc. The changing environment or media landscape is dictating new methods and ways on how to connect with our customers. Search engines, social media, are becoming powerful marketing tools that can’t be ignored.
To develop the best marketing strategy for our business, we need to look at the 5W:
Always start with a Why, potential clients don’t need to know WHAT you do, nor HOW you do it.
They want to know WHY you do it, and what they end up with. They want to know about the pain you solve, or the vision you create.

My Grandfather, a father of five children, had a wholesale store selling sugar, flour, edible oil, gee, and other things that pastries and bakeries use. He had a successful business that he provided a good living for his family. He was also a well-known trader in his profession.
Like other business owners, he was the manager, the accountant, the salesperson, the order taker, and other function. His business depended solely on his presence. In 1983 he had a stroke, which kept... him hospitalised for some time, then paralysed for another period.
During that time, specialised hospitals in his case were not available in the city we live in; thus my uncle had to travel with him seeking medical assistance. During that time, the store closed for some time, customers were understanding, but that meant they would be finding other alternatives, which would result in the total closure of the business. My uncle suggested I would handle the shop on my own. I was 16 at the time, luckily it happened during the summer vacation, so I was able to help.
It took my Granddad more than a year to recover and to get back on his feet. During his recovery period, my uncle took over, and I was relieved from my duties.
It is not a unique situation, but rather very common. It could have happened to a variety of business around the world. The result is usually disastrous. In many cases we are reactive, we tend to seek solutions when we are in trouble, rather than start preparing in advance for potential scenarios.
For many business owners, seeking help or support means they are in trouble. On the contrary, to grow, we should seek inspiration, support and guidance.
Imagine you are an Olympic Athlete, would you do it on your own? How many people would form your support group? A full team that would not only inspire you but also improve your fitness, your nutrition, your performance, style and many more would be required. The same applies to business.
