Lee returns to his Judo roots thanks to his son.
Sports are often participated in when we are young, sometimes getting to quite a good standard. As time progresses, work, family and other commitments can cause participation to reduce or stop altogether. However, sometimes that urge to take up a sport again can come from a source close to home. That is what has happened to Lee Warry, Bodyshop Manager at Adams Morey in Southampton and Aftersales Manager at Eastleigh. As a 5 y...ear old Lee was introduced to Judo by his father. They joined the same club and Lee was soon hooked on the martial art and by his teens was training three times a week. At the age of 16 the club folded and Lee found it difficult to find another club. Fast forward a few years (!) and when Lee’s son Thomas turned 5 he was encouraged to try such sports as football, rugby and swimming, but he was not keen. There happened to be a Judo competition on at the local Leisure Centre they visited and Thomas loved what he saw. It must have been in the genes! “In the early days Thomas was a little tentative” says Lee, “but he soon gained his confidence. Before long he was hooked and trained twice a week. As an 8 year old now he can start to compete. He is learning the language, the techniques and the sport itself. He started the ‘Sho’ grade awards as a 5 year old and has progressed through all 9 grades, achieving all 9 belts. Just one of two youngsters at the club to achieve this by the age of 8. “I was inspired to go back into Judo and it has given me great pleasure to be at Fleming Park Judo Club with Thomas. British Judo Olympian, Ashley McKenzie taught a master class at the club and Thomas managed to get his autograph and have a photo taken with him and me.” Lee started again from scratch 3 years ago with his white belt and has since achieved his red, yellow, orange, green and blue belts. Lee will be grading later this year for his brown belt with his sights set on competing for his black belt next year. It was a 20th year anniversary working for Adams Morey in July 2019 for Lee. He joined the company straight from school as an apprentice technician, working his way up as a workshop supervisor at Redbridge before graduating onto his present management positions. The family is completed by Lee’s wife Helen and their 6 year old daughter, Sophie. The family have a camper van which is used regularly for trips all over the UK, France and Spain.

Adams Morey provide excellent trailer servicing from Portsmouth depot.
Adams Morey have a very busy service and maintenance department placed close to the ports of Portsmouth and Southampton where hundreds of freight trailers arrive and depart each day. At Adams Morey Portsmouth specialist technicians are available to work on trailer repair and maintenance and there are also three mobile trailer service vans that respond to call outs. Jamie Rickman is the Trailer Service Man...ager at Adams Morey and he has been with the company since 2008. Jamie served his apprenticeship with Condor Logistics before moving to an M C Truck and Bus Volvo dealership. He has graduated up through the ranks at Adams Morey to be in charge of the impressive trailer maintenance section of the Portsmouth dealership. Jamie explained the offer to customers: “We offer service and repairs for all types of trailers. This includes refrigerated, curtain-side, box, flatbed, skeletal, semi-low loader, draw-bar, tippers, walking floor and food and waste tankers. We have had specialist training in dealing with tail-lifts and lifting decks and will also undertake curtain repairs. “We have a bodyshop on site which works alongside the trailer workshop on more extensive body repairs. We have two welder/fabricators here for chassis fabrication, floor replacement and 5th wheel replacement. With two tractor units dedicated to the trailer workshop we can collect and deliver trailers for customers.” An extra dimension to the Adams Morey offer is through the three mobile technicians who will go out on the road to work on trailers up and down the country. With so many trailers entering the Continental ferry port each day the mobile technicians are based at the port each morning, particularly to ensure that the Ferryspeed trailers coming from the Channel Islands are fit for the road. Trucks coming in from Europe can be halted by VOSA and require remedial work from the mobile technicians before progressing onto the UK roads. The mobile vans are fitted with on-board scrutineer equipment for solitary, free-standing trailers. The technicians can run Electronic Braking System (EBS) tests on all three brands of brakes most commonly used on trailers. Adams Morey also have technicians trained to work on axle and suspension work. Adams Morey have invested in people and equipment to make the Portsmouth trailer servicing department one of the best in the country.

Adams Morey staff ensure vehicle safety at Fawley Oil Refinery.
The breadth of technical support given by Adams Morey is reflected in the stationing of Adams Morey technicians on site at the Fawley Oil Refinery, delivering safety checks, surgery and maintenance for over 300 vehicles which operate there. Adams Morey works closely with CBRE the parent company which has responsibility for the management of the commercial real estate at the plant. Their remit includes the grounds... maintenance, catering and building repair and maintenance.
For the past 2 years Tom Hall and Tim Mapleson, both based at Adams Morey Millbrook, along with Olly Meacher, from Adams Morey Redbridge, have operated from the Adams Morey dedicated workshops at Fawley. They recover vehicles across the site and carry out the necessary maintenance work. On behalf of CBRE, Vaughn Van Staden is the Garage Co-ordinator and he works closely with the Adams Morey team.
Vaughn says of the relationship: “I liaise between the vehicle leasing company, Adams Morey and CBRE. This ensures that there is as seamless an operation as possible on site. My role helps the Adams Morey technicians to deal with staff on site. We have a very good relationship and there is excellent communication between Tom, Tim and Olly and myself. We work closely to ensure that vehicle issues are sorted very quickly.”
The Fawley site is situated on Southampton Water and was rebuilt and extended in 1951 and is now the largest oil refinery in the United Kingdom, and one of the most complex refineries in Europe. It is owned by ExxonMobil. Because of the inflammable nature of the products produced at the refinery there are Red Zones in which vehicles have to be fitted with special Chalwyn valves to the air intake to prevent engines accelerating due to the intake of flammable gases, which could lead to an over–heated engine and possible explosion. The Adams Morey team fit and maintain these essential safety components.
Vaughn is delighted that the Adams Morey team work quickly and react 24/7 when called upon.
The photograph shows left to right: From Adams Morey - Bob Cartwright, General Manager, Tim Mapleson and Oliver Meacher Technicians, Gary Morrison, Aftersales Manager and Vaughn Van Staden of CBRE.

Kevin hailed a hero for helping to save a walkers life during the Walk the Wight.
Every year, people who take part in Mountbatten’s Walk the Wight raise a phenomenal amount of money, in support of patient and family care for those facing end of life and bereavement. Kevin Blackburn was one of those participants in this year’s walk, setting off with colleagues from the Isle of Wight rugby club intent on raising much needed funds for the charity.
However, that day was set to ch...ange more than one person’s life as, about three-quarters of the way along the route, a fellow walker, Neil Fawcett, collapsed and required immediate first aid. Kevin and colleagues were on the scene and had recently completed a CPR course. Together with a midwife, who happened to be in the vicinity, life-saving CPR was given to Neil with each taking turns whilst the paramedics were sought.
The swift actions of Kevin, the players and the midwife saved the Neil’s life and he was air-lifted to Southampton for life-saving heart surgery. In emotional circumstances Neil got to meet up with his rescuers and Kevin is pictured (right in both photos) at an awards ceremony with Neil to celebrate the saving of his life and with his colleagues at the end of the walk.
Kevin works at the Adams Morey DAF service and maintenance depot in Newport on the Isle of Wight. He is on the right in the presentation photo and with his rugby colleagues at the Walk.

Ben’s apprenticeship at Adams Morey has changed his life.
Ben Sloman is celebrating his graduation from his 3 year DAF apprenticeship at Adams Morey in Basingstoke. Ben, who lives in Alton, went to college from school to gain qualifications in Information Technology, however he realised that an office based work placement was not going to be for him. He moved into light vehicle maintenance at the Basingstoke College of Technology for 2 years and this set him on the track of ...gaining work experience with local VW and Volvo specialists.
Ben admits that at that time he was shy and not experienced enough on the practical side of the work. The theoretical side came easily to him. He decided to sign up with Skillnet and they found him an HGV apprenticeship with DAF through Adams Morey and Ben jumped at the chance.
“I had two interviews one with Skillnet and then with Adams Morey and the result was I started on the apprenticeship. It was the best thing I could have done and has changed my life. I am so much more confident now and have developed a lot of skills”, said Ben. “I apply the learning each day in the workshop and I get paid too! It is a win- win situation for me. I enjoy learning and improving myself.”
Ben continued: “The team here have been great with me. In the first year I had a mentor, but once they could see my potential I was given more independence and responsibility. My confidence has grown and I really enjoy coming to work. Attending the DAF College in Bristol enabled me to make new friends who come from Northern Ireland, this would never have happened if I had not got the apprenticeship.”
Ben has a passion for motorbikes and even took a road trip to the South of France on his Yamaha MT07. This was the holiday of a lifetime and was made the sweeter by Ben working hard to raise the money to make the trip.

Love blossomed for Dawn at Adams Morey Basingstoke.
For Dawn Reichmann the path to true love was actually through working at Adams Morey in Basingstoke and falling for the charms of a customer! We will let Dawn take up the story:
“I started working at Basingstoke Commercials in Feb 2011. They were bought out by Adams Morey in Dec 2013 – I guess you could say I was part of the furniture. Through the business, I ended up getting married to one of my customers (that sounds so w...rong!)
“Simon was working on the Argos 2 Man Home Delivery Contract in Basingstoke. We have been Servicing & Maintaining DHL vehicles for this contract for over the last 14 plus years.
“Whilst I have known Simon since 2011 it was always a professional working relationship. In 2013 this changed and we started to date – his drivers broke the trucks, my technicians fixed them! After 6 years together, we celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary at the end of September.
“Simon left Argos a few years ago and is currently on the Steinhoff contract with DHL, he is currently the Operations Manager. They used to be based in Bell Road, Basingstoke ( around the corner), however the operation moved to Reading – glad to report they still bring the vehicle to us despite being closer to the opposition. Simon is well known by everyone here at Adams Morey Basingstoke.”
So you never know where love can strike. Perhaps Cupid is an Adams Morey employee on the quiet!
