Swollen gums during the pregnancy
Some women get swollen and sore gums, which may bleed, in pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your gums more vulnerable to plaque, leading to inflammation and bleeding. This is also called pregnancy gingivitis or gum disease.
... It's very important to keep your teeth and gums as clean and healthy as possible while you're pregnant. These hormonal changes also hinder the body’s normal response to bacteria which can cause periodontal infections.
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day . Also keep your regular appointments and discuss professional cleanings and any problems with your dentist. If gingivitis is left unchecked it may lead to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis which during pregnancy can increase the chance of preterm birth.
Keep your gums and teeth healthy!
-Clean your teeth carefully twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once a day. -Avoid having sugary drinks and sugary foods too often – try to keep them to meal times. -Practice good nutrition. -Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol. -If you have morning sickness rinse your mouth with plain water after each time you vomit. This will help prevent the acid in your vomit attacking your teeth.
Please don't avoid to visit your dentist while you are pregnant!!! Contact our practice on 01702 584000. and book an appointment!

Why is important to have fluoride varnish application and fissure sealants
Fissure sealants are plastic coatings that are painted on to the grooves of the back teeth. The sealant forms a protective layer that keeps food and bacteria from getting stuck in the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.
... Fissure sealants should be applied to the permanent molars of all children as early after eruption as possible (usually at the age of about six or seven). The process is usually quick and easy taking only a few minutes per tooth.
Sealant usually last for many years, but needs to be checked regularly to make sure that the seal is intact.
Fluoride varnish can be applied to both baby teeth and adult teeth. It involves painting a varnish that contains high levels of fluoride on to the surface of the tooth every six months to prevent decay. It works by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
From the age of three, children should be offered fluoride varnish application at least twice a year.
Contact our practice and make an appointment on 01702 584000. Make sure you check your teeth regularly!!!

Why is very important to see the hygienist?
Everyone should see the hygienist every 6 months or at least once a year.
Gum disease is often caused by a build up of plaque bacteria. When the plague is getting hard is impossible for us to remove it without having the professional deep cleaning done it by the hygienist.... Some people have also a lot of brown stains on the teeth because of the diet(coloured food, wine, black tea, coffee or smoking) so in this case they will also need one or more hygienist visits to help them to remove the stains. The hard buildup will also give a non- pleasant smell in the mouth(bad breath). After one or more hygienist visits your breath feel much fresher, teeth much cleaner and gums healthier.
The best way to remove the plague is brushing at least twice a day . But no matter how well you clean your teeth there will always be hard to reach some areas that are tricky to keep clean. In these areas, plaque bacteria can accumulate and may eventually mineralise to form a tough, crusty deposit called calculus or tartar. So If not removed, more plaque can build up around the tooth and potentially under the gum line, leading to the progression of gum disease.
To reduce the risk of gum disease or to help stop it from becoming more serious, your dentist may recommend that you have a professional clean, called a scale and polish, to get your teeth properly clean.
Please contact our dental practice on 01702 584000 and ask more about the hygienist appointment.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DECIDE NOT TO REPLACE A MISSING TOOTH?
Following a tooth extraction, patients face sometimes the difficulty to take a decision of how to replace the missing tooth and if they need to replace the tooth. A missing tooth is important to be replace firstly for the smile, cosmetic reason but also important for the work of chewing. The absent tooth played an important role in processing food, and an extra force may be put it on the neighbour teeth making them also ...loose in time. So those excess chewing forces have to the potential to damage the remaining teeth in the vicinity.
Dental implants have become a particularly popular intervention for tooth loss. Not only does a dental implant provide a replacement tooth with a lifelike appearance, it also preserves much of the functionality that the biological tooth contributed in the smile. There are also other options for replacing the missing tooth as denture or bridge and is very important to disscuss everything with the dentist and take the right decision in your case. After undergoing a tooth extraction, patients should seriously consider their options for replacement teeth and move forward with the chosen treatment as soon as possible.
Please contact us on 01702 584000 have a check up and disscuss with your dentist all the options for the right treatment.

What is a root canal and how is carried out ?!
Preparation
Root canal treatment is usually carried out under local anesthetic.... Occasionally, teeth may be difficult to anesthetist. On these occasions, your dentist can use special local anesthetic techniques to ensure your treatment isn't painful. The dentist will open your tooth, will drill in the middle of the tooth, through the crown , to access the soft tissue at the center of the tooth . Then will remove any infected part of the pulp. If you have a dental abscess, which is a pus-filled swelling, your dentist will be able to drain it at the same time.
Cleaning and filling the root canal
After the infected pulp has been removed, the dentist will clean with the disinfectant solution and enlarge the root canal so it can be easily filled. The dentist will use a series of small files to clean and enlarge the canals and make them a regular shape so they can be filled. If the treatment needs to be carried out over one ore more sessions, dentist will put a small amount of medication in the cleaned canal in between visits to kill any remaining bacteria. The tooth will then be sealed using a temporary filling.
Sealing and fixing the tooth
At your next visit, the temporary filling and medication within the tooth is removed and the root canal filling will be inserted. Root-filled teeth are more likely to break or fracture than healthy teeth because they are really fragile after the nerve was removed. In this case the best option is a CROWN to be placed on top of the tooth to protected it.
Please contact our dentist on 01702 584000 and make an appointment to check your teeth regularly.

The Importance of Wearing a Retainer after Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment is becoming more and more popular over time. Not only are young teenagers getting the treatment done, but more and more adults from ages 20 to 60+ are also receiving orthodontic treatment, after all, it’s never too late to improve your smile and bite! Making your teeth straight is not a problem for dental experts but what some patients struggle with is maintaining the position of the straig...ht teeth after treatment has been completed. Lots of patients come back after they had previous orthodontic treatment as a child, and now teeth have all moved back to their original position. Unfortunately, not everybody knows the importance of wearing RETAINERS!!!
Your teeth, will always have a chance of movement if after the treatment you don't wear the retainer. Studies show that in the first month, the chance of relapse is very high.So it is very important to wear the retainer when the brace has been removed. Retainers should be worn all the time,as in some type of retainer needs to be permanent. There are two types of retainers, one is a fixed retainer, and the other is a removable retainer.
1) A fixed retainer is a stainless steel thin wire which is bonded to the back of your teeth, normally from your first canine, to the other canine on the opposite side. It can be placed on the upper or lower teeth, depending on which teeth are being treated. 2) The removable retainer is made from clear plastic, similar to a whitening tray, and just fits over your teeth, this is to be worn daily, most people wear theirs overnight. If you have both retainers that’s even better, as you can ever be too safe!
If you are interested to have an orthodontic treatment or to make sure you are maintaining your teeth straight after the treatment please contact us on 01702 584000 and we can always put you in contact with our Orthodontist!!

How to to take care of your children's teeth from brushing their first tooth to their first trip to the dentist ! 😊
Start brushing your baby's teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through. Children from the age of seven can use family toothpaste, as long as it contains 1,350-1,500 parts per million (ppm) fluoride. Make sure children don't eat or lick toothpaste from the tube.
... Toothbrushing tips:
Brush your child's teeth for about two minutes twice a day: once just before breakfast and once before bedtime. Supervise tooth brushing until your child is at least seven or eight years old. Guide your child's hand so they can feel the correct movement. Make tooth brushing as fun as possible by using an egg timer
Taking your child to the dentist: NHS dental care for children is free. Take your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth appear. This is so they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist. Just opening up the child's mouth for the dentist to take a look at is useful practise for the future. When you visit the dentist, be positive about it and make the trip fun. This will stop your child worrying about future visits.

Receding gums
Receding gums may be caused by a number of factors, including:
aggressive brushing over the long term... hardened plaque buildup (tartar) smoking hormonal changes in women family history of gum disease diabetes HIV/AIDS
Periodontal disease is a progressed form of gingivitis. It first starts off with a buildup of bacteria and plaque within the gums and the teeth. Over time, stuck-on plaque damages the gums and causes them to fall back from the teeth. In severe cases, pockets form between the teeth and gums. This creates a breeding ground for even more bacteria and plaque to form.
Certain medications that cause dry mouth can also increase your risk for receding gums. Dry mouth means your mouth has less saliva than it should. Without adequate saliva, the tissues in your mouth can become vulnerable to bacterial infections and injuries.
Symptoms of receding gums include:
bleeding after brushing or flossing red, swollen gums bad breath pain at the gum line visibly shrinking gums exposed tooth roots loose teeth
Perhaps one of the best tools for preventing receding gums is to see a dentist for regular cleanings and checks. Even if you don’t experience any symptoms, a dentist can identify early signs of gum disease. You can also help prevent gum problems by practicing smart oral health habits.

What are dental implants?
A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It is a titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root, it is placed into the jawbone. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. If an implant has a screw-thread on its outer surface it can be screwed into position and if it does not, it is usually tapped into place. The main aim during in...stallation of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone.
Do implants hurt?
Placing an implant is often easier than taking a tooth out and is usually done using a simple local anesthetic. You will not feel any pain at the time, but just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery. Why are Dental Implants Important? Replacing missing teeth helps prevent the shattering of your confidence levels and helps you avoid social situations where you may feel truly embarrassed or may even look a lot older than you are.
Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. Our dentists can give you the best advise about having an implant. Contact us on 01702 584000.

Did you know?
Chewing sugarfree gum after eating or drinking is a valuable tool which can help support oral hygiene when patients don't have immediate access to more traditional oral care techniques.
The European Commission (EU) has approved five oral health claims for sugarfree chewing gum, one of the few food categories to gain such recognition.
