About Agri-Food Business And Entreprenuership Society

The AFBE Society is created and run by Coventry University students to be a platform of discussion and action on the topics of Agriculture, Food, AgriTech, and FoodTech as well as entrepreneurship and startups in these fields. Our main interest is in exploring how food and its production and consumption could in the future become more sustainable as food production is currently one of the largest issues facing global warming. Agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gasses directly accounting for roughly 17% of all gasses emitted as well as an additional 7-14% through changes in land use. The greenhouse gasses emitted by agriculture are extremely concerning as the main emissions compose of methane and nitrous oxide which are both potentially more damaging to global warming than carbon dioxide. This contribution is also only expected to increase as the worldwide population continues to grow. By 2050 the population is estimated to reach nearly 10 billion which means more and more food needs to be produced. Therefore, the future of agriculture is a very prominent question when discussing sustainability and global warming. Though agriculture at its current state is a major threat to global warming, it also has the potential to become the solution to help solve it. The AFBE society is aiming to start discussions and explore possibilities to help shape the agriculture of the future to be more sustainable and efficient to feed the evergrowing population without causing destruction to the planet.
