About Airimages

AIRimages is a London-based art collective founded in 2009, by Bettina John (Berlin), Jaime Leme (São Paulo) and Sebastien Freuler (Geneva). Their work playfully combines different approaches to the construction of images through the synthesis of different artistic forms. Their projects bring together photography, video and interactive media and put these in contact with fashion and performance to explore the possibilities of the image, beyond traditional understandings of aesthetic production. In often, an impromptu and unexpected situation for the participant, AIRimages challenges conventional image-making modes in order to understand image communication and discover new ways of expression. In doing so, the artists deconstruct and rearrange preconceived aesthetic values, analyzing different ways of producing an image, a piece of art. The search into this process of visual creation is key to their work. In this process-led activity they try to get closer to the grain of photography and show the world beyond the frame. Their photographs show not only the final result of a photo-shoot session but also the interaction between participants or models and the photographer, an event that happened beyond the intention laid-out beforehand, a real, unplanned happening. In that sense, the interest is not necessarily in the photograph, but in what is happening beyond the frame during the process of taking the picture.
