Akamba Heritage Centre Description

Akamba Easy Exotics Garden Centre - The palm tree people and a garden centre like no other! We offer an exciting range of cold hardy exotic plants including ferns, palms and also have stunning metal sculptures of African animals and birds. Butterflies, birds, and beautiful plants - wander round the centre and stay for a drink. With a bar and a great venue with seating, we have regular BBQ evenings and nights with live music.

Chris has a great passion for exotic plants, exotic places and Africa in particular. He has been growing plants since he could walk, on leaving school at the age of sixteen his passion for ice skating took him to an olympic level at speed skating, where he represented Great Britain in the olympics, aswell as sports he has been a glass blower, fashion designer, artist, sculptor and gym instructor.

Akamba was founded in 2002 after years of growing hardy exotic plants but never being able to buy them locally, Chris decided to source and import them himself, The plants combined with a love for African art created the perfect recipe for an African garden centre.

All the African art is fair trade, Chris and Kel know all the artists and their families on a personal level and work very closely with them to achieve the standards and finish required for the western market.

The plants at Akamba are often cold grown without the aid of vast green houses, this helps them thrive in our chilly British winters.

During the years at Akamba Chris has worked on many TV gardening programmes such as Challange Tommy Walsh, Garden Invaiders and has featured on BBC Gardeners World.

At Akamba we offer all services ranging from garden design, venue hire, plant hire or a simple chat on the telephone to answer a query.

Our gardening services include:

Landscape Design - Home & Commercial
Commercial Sales
Venue & Plant Hire
Plant Request
Wholesale & Trade

Me , my wife and brother in law went to the Akamba Big Jam yesterday.

We had a great day !!

We had VIP passes so we enjoyed the great atmosphere outside and the chilled vibe in the restaurant area.

The food was awesome , the drinks were a reasonable price.

The music was excellent, good quality live bands and the icing on th cake was Legend a fantastic Bob Marley and the Wailers tribute band.

I definitely be going again next year 🇯🇲😊🇬🇳🤙🏽

Lovely garden centre and the staff in the reptile house got some of the animals out to get a close up look.

Will definitely go back.

User

It was my first visit and I throught it wonderful

My grandchildren really loved it

Can’t wait to go again 😀

User

I attended the Big Jam with a friend off the cuff.

The event had a really good vibe about it and the acts were of good standard. It’s got a unique feel to the venue and the Mash Up cocktails are potent!

I will be back.

First time visiting yesterday, we loved it so are going back during half term with my grandchildren, sister and her children. Staff are lovely and so friendly. Enjoyed the food too. Nice chilled atmosphere. The birds and the reptiles just add to the magic of the place.

User

First time visit absolutely loved it. Beautiful place, friendly staff and lovely food . Defiantly going back

User

Absolute brilliant day, so well organised, best one yet x

The big Jam. Not as many people attended as last year. Food was good...drinks good..entertainment was really good. Fireworks were brilliant It's unique for a first timer . The site could do with an overhaul if I'm honest. Can be expensive

It's difficult to describe what Akamba is. Part animal sanctuary, part garden centre, part arts exhibition, beach and chill out zone.

Mostly I think it's a chill out one with the other things playing a supporting role.

Incredibly well designed, the atmosphere is laid back and soporific.

If anything is askew it is the staff. Like so many great ideas it starts to wane when the person/s that set it all up moves away from the front line. The knowledge and enthusiasm doesn't transfer to everyone employed.

User

Food was lovely, especially the goat curry. 2 little hiccups - the bar is a bit slow getting drink orders and the whole place seemed a little undestaffed. That said I would Defo go back 👍

User

1st time we’ve been. Loved it Great walking round seeing all the metal sculptures. Not exspensive for drinks either. Friendly staff and great garden areas. 😊😊😊

User

Ok, but once you done it, nothing very special to bring you back again.

User

Beautiful surroundings but the food lets it down

User

we are here now they don't say that it's an extra £4 to see the birds, a pound for the sand - everything is extra money that isn't advertised b4hand. we travelled on the train over 40mins to get here to be to endure over the top bag searching. it's £2 for a garden centre which are usually are free then dear prices on top when u get here, it's ruined our view of the place and we won't be returning

User

The live band festival was fantastic!!!

But the day was let down by only VIP passes allowed into the building to use toilet facilities, where as normal ticket purchases were to use the disgusting portaloo cabins which were beyond fifthy, to this fact when I needed the toilet I went home.

The food queues everyone was complaining about as this was a big event with not enough planning to reduce the queues to get drinks etc. Not enough seating for an 11 hour event either so I don't think I would go to another one.

User

Just came back from the Music Festival. Paid over £50 for 2 adults & 1 child to get in. Other than the bouncy castle everything was costed. £3 for a slice of cake, £5 for a burger & chips, drinks, animal handling, even £1 to go on the 'beach'. For the entrance fee I expect more. Don't get me wrong I love Akamba but I won't go to an event again but happy to go for drinks.

It’s a shame as I think this place has gone down hill a lot. There used to be loads of good quality tropical plants to buy but since the severe winter of 2010, where many tree ferns etc died, the place has never really recovered and looks tired.

The concept of the place is great, but it seems to lack any maintenance and plant care.

Food is ok, but quite expensive and it is a shame they charge extra for the ‘beach’ and to see the birds in the tropical house.

10 years ago this was definitely a 5* place, but not anymore sadly, come on Akamba, you can do better.
