Akhwaat Hijama Therapy Description

Hijama is the Arabic name in traditional medicine for wet cupping, where blood is drawn by
vacuum from a small skin incision for therapeutic purposes. The blessed prophet Muhammad saw said, "Indeed the best of remedies you have is hijama, and if there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is Hijama.

Hijama can be performed almost anywhere on the body, often at the site of an ache or pain in order to ease or alleviate it. Originally Hijama was known as 'cupping' because of the use of cups as therapeutic tools. Initially the horn or cup was heated to create a negative pressure and this was mostly used to draw out blood and pus, but later, it was found to be effective in treating other diseases and over time developed into a therapeutic method. The modern method is not to use fire but to use sterile plastic cups with a pump to create the vacuum within.
There are 5 different types of Cupping:

Dry cupping - This is a process where the cups are placed on the body with suction however the incisions are not made therefore blood is not removed from the skin. This type of cupping mechanically stretches tight tissues, releases fascia and connective tissue, helps draw inflammation away from a secondary site and reduces pain.

Wet cupping (Hijama) - This is the process where the cups are placed on the body with suction and then incisions are made on the skin to allow the removal of blood from the body. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and this is called Hijama. benefits include reduction of inflammation, swelling, relaxing /stress relieving as endorphins are released, helps in pain reduction as well as stimulating lymphatic drainage.

Massage Cupping-
Cups are applied with the liberal use of oil and light suction followed by moving the cups gently around the surface of the skin to stimulate circulation, lymphatic drainage and reduce knots in muscle tissue.

Active release cupping- This is the combination of static cupping and stretches which is used to treat problems with muscles, tendons, fascia and nerves.

Flash cupping- suction is applied at intervals for a few seconds while the cup is moving and massaging the skin. Blood circulation is increased and pulsation and pressure changes encourage healthy fluid movement. Very effective for facial rejuvenation, less likely to leave marks than the other forms of cupping.
